I think Michigan defines up to two cartons of cancer sticks as personal, and
more than two cartons you're assumed to be an unlicensed dealer trafficking in
untaxed goods.
Don't know about booze, but just think how many bottles of distilled spirits a
full timer in a motor home has in a well stocked liquor cabinet. The Canadians
just love to tell one of those 70 year old guys that he and his wife can't come
in unless he leaves $500 worth of booze with the customs workers. If they were
just taking the short route from Michigan to New York, they invariably take the
longer route through Ohio and vow to boycott Canada for the rest of their lives.

The Masshole politicians are tired of their citizens going to New
Hampster to buy liquor cheaper (and on Sunday too) so they occasionally
set up surveillance at the big state likka sto on 93 right across the
border, then bust Mass citizens who are bringing across low-tax booze,
beer, wine, and cigs. A few months back an enterprising Mass Citizen
staked out one of the big shot pols who was loading up his car, took
vids and accosted him about it. Made all the papers and TV and turns
out the pol has a 2nd home up there somewhere, and said he was getting
stuff for the house (on a Sunday evening at the last store before the
border). Liar! Busted!

Cannot do that here. We have stations at the provincial borders that
demand you stop and declare smokes bought in
the next province. Failure to do so can get you busted big time. The
reason being of course that the taxes are
higher in Manitoba and the powers that be do not like you to buy your
smokes in the province with lower taxes.
