Yea that’s why I liked the once or sometimes twice a month deal. I am sure I
will still be gone at times but won’t get to see different parts of the
country.

I am sure there will be a mass exodus of people who will not like the new
situation as some of them did not want to be put on the install team.

Yeah, I enjoyed the twice monthly traveling I did when I was doing the
recruiting of operators for the old nuke plant, but it grew tedious after ten
years. Eventually, I had to pass it off to the younger, fresher faces of
nuclear power.
You can help in the bakery if you run out of things to do at work or in your

Wow, that sucks.

After weeks of complete silence, they had a call last monday to basically say
they knew nothing and anything we have heard is just rumors. By Thursday they
sent out an email saying our new managers would be reaching out to let us know
what our new jobs would be. Apparently some of our people were staying in their
current roles and others were moving to an install team. Basically the way it
is now is we all have 1 week a month where we travel to areas outside our
normal territory to implement new accounts. Now they will have a team who does
this full time. I remained in my existing job but will most likely have a lot
more area to cover. I will no longer be flying to different areas for installs.
This trip to NYC in a couple of weeks will be my last. No idea if or how often
I will be traveling now but it sounds like it would just be with my territory.

Re: [MBZ] It’s hitting the fan

That’s true in some states, but not all.

In Florida, you’re vested in the pension plan after 8 years. The whole time
you’re employed, you contribute 3% of your salary and your employer contributes
3%.

My youngest son works for the City of Flagstaff and in Arizona you contribute
12% and your employer the same. That’s pretty steep when you think about it,
and that’s off the top before taxes, too, I believe.

Our county has done a really good job keeping parity with the private sector
for the most part. We're still probably 20% below what a similar private sector
job would pay with decent benefits. Our benefits are pretty much on par with
most private companies.

One of my coworkers used to live in Long Beach and was a civil servant. He told
me the stories of how lucrative California’s state retirement programs were. I
did some work years ago with California Department of Corrections, and those
guys told me they got some serious coin at retirement.

2021-07-21 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I guess that makes sense but that hadn't occurred to me.

Is it still possible to buy an "individual" plan from a local agent? I had that
when I worked for a company that didn't offer an employer plan. It was fairly
reasonable in cost, notably it did not cover maternity but that was no longer
an issue for my family. I was even able to set it up so that the company made
the payments, witheld from my salary pre-tax. Did that all go away with ACA?

Yep, it's expensive as you pay the fully loaded cost but better than a gap in
coverage in a transition period like that.

Also, this would qualify as a life change so I would think they should be able
to get onto one of the public options without waiting for annual enrollment.

Buying market share until you're a quasi-monopoly (like Verizon and ATT)

Ditching employees is the way to raise your next quarterly bonus, until

But relocating a facility in order to raise costs and get rid of hard

Couldn't tell you. I do own stock, still, part of the original buyout. (Share
exchange.)
I suppose I should sell it.

OTOH, I was laid off from another company, one where I had a significant number
of
vested ISO shares. Had I sold all then in a fit of pique, I'd have lost out on
its growth since
then. From <$20/share at time of layoff, it peaked at about $210/share.
Currently $189.

Single biggest part of my retirement portfolio, by far. Had I _not_ been laid
off,
I would have several times the number of shares, and would be fully retire-able
now.
Still, if I can't be retired, working for a theme park is not a bad consolation
prize!

Life is weird sometimes.

Our company was bought, and really _was_ a valuable acquisition in
that our products, added to their line, were highly successful. Yet, there
were multiple layoffs. We were continually told that we were valued by
corporate,
and not to worry. That is, until they decided to close the office (what
remained
of our original company) altogether and move all support to India. (Useless,

This is the same company that had decided to 'save' money by moving our
extensive
(and expensive) test lab, housed in an _owned_ building, from eastern WA to
silicon valley --- where space, labor, and power (significant) are _so_ much
cheaper!
They got rid of the building altogether, basically giving it away, and moved
the remaining
engineering staff to rented space. Fools.

A (very) few were offered work-from-home status, including me. I decided that
if I

heard all employees will be gone by October. In other words, not a good day.

it once. Survived the first round but a few months later the money ran out and
they just shut everything down.
