Re: [MBZ] Lug nuts

2021-05-31 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My '98 Jetta was super sensitive to getting the wheels on just right, if they
weren't all the way in when you tightened the lugs the wouldn't get really
tight and would work loose again. The car would shake terribly as they
loosened, it would get pretty frightening on the highway.
Worst time it happened it was really cold out and the trunk had frozen shut so
I couldn't get to the lug wrench to tighten them. I had to run the heat on high
for 20 minutes and get the cabin sweltering hot to get the trunk to release.

I few years ago I bought new tires for the Nissan Frontier. Drove home
from the tire shop and next day driving back in to town there was a
strange vibration and noise. Pulled off at a convenience store and found
the lug nuts on the driver's side front wheel were lose, not even finger
tight.

Tightened them up, checked all the other wheels, and went on with my
day.

Now I always check them whenever a shop has had a wheel off.

I always check the lugs before taking off. This time I was going to but then I
didn’t because I figured I just put the wheels back on. I remember how it went
down now because I lifted the back the trailer with the tractor to pull all the
wheels at the same time and installed the one side hand tight, installed the
other side, let trailer back down and finished tightening then forgot to go
back got the first side. I figure it was habit because usually I jack one side
and do it then move to the other side.

Your timing was just right. Imagine the wild ride you could have taken,
across 4 lanes of traffic, when the trailer was loaded with a car, both
wheels came off, the trailer jackknifes and flips your pull vehicle upside
down, into oncoming traffic, across the median... in front of a school bus
[OK, I just threw that one in for the fright factor].

ALWAYS torque your lug nuts, before you check your fuses... ;))
