Seems like in the summer you want the relative humidity booster (evap
coil) downstream of your blower and furnace electronics.

Heat pumps are typically rated at 47F and 17F.

Look at the coefficients of performance for 3 different models of Goodman's
basic line. (the 2021 version of my 2013 system) Notice that two of them are
getting close to 1:1 performance at -5F, while the other one is still
putting out 170% of the heat that you'd get from using he same electricity
in resistance heaters.

At anything much below 25F, my 1.5 ton unit puts out fewer BTUs than the
house loses, so that's the absolute floor for me with propane backup,
because the heat pump has to switch off when you light a fire under its
indoor coil.

Electric backup grids are placed downstream of the refrigerant coil, so you
can keep running the heat pump at -5 while the resistance heater cycles on
and off as needed.

Updraft furnace, with an A coil on top for refrigerant, typical looking
condenser outdoors except it has a reversing valve in it, and the
expansion valve on the A coil has a one way bypass for heating mode. The
timed defrost annoyed me, it always defrosted too often except in foggy
weather when it defrosted far too seldom. So I bought a demand defrost
control board and matching temperature sensors. Now it defrosts every 4
1/2 hours of running time, or whenever the coil temp drops too far below
ambient (indicating inefficiency due to coil frost).

I 'spect natural gas was a lot more costly then. The price has come WAY down

One more thing, I will say it has been much cheaper with the heat pump than in
our other house which is newer and smaller using gas. Our winter electric bill
here is usually around $200 a month. Our electric bill there was probably
around $130-160 and gas was about $160. So a slight increase in electric but
totally cutting out the gas bill.

Re: [MBZ] More heat pump

2021-02-17 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
They do sell dual fuel models that have a gas furnace built in. I have not dug
into it in depth as to exactly how much more expensive they are. In my case it
would have to be setup for propane and would need to have a tank and line
installed. I an ideal world i would install a tank, run the line out to the
shop to run the heaters there, install backup gen and have it run off the
propane, then run a line into the house to use for cooking instead of electric.
Perhaps when the heat pump needs to be replaced get a dual fuel unit depending
on the additional cost.

So here is a small example of the Texas situation.  Do you as a
homeowner go out and spend say $10k to install a propane backup system,
tie it into your heat pump system, for the minimal amount of time you
might need it when the temps are below 10F or so, which happens
infrequently, or do you just deal with infrequent cold spells like that
however you can, maybe some marginal upgrades or nothing at all.  It's
your money, how do you want to use it?

This has been the first time dealing with a heat pump at this low of temps.
Basically my observation is that is seems to heat fine without any aux heat at
around 22 and above. From about 12 to 22 heats but uses aux heat occasionally.
6 to 12 heats but uses aux heat frequently. And below 6 starts getting to the

most of time.

I'm amazed that you get any heat at all from that in temps below 20 deg F.

Don't recall if you mentioned how old your heat pump system is? Newer
ones can work in colder temps but the "rule of thumb" used to be that
heat pumps were good to about 20F, which seems to be what you are
seeing?
