Re: [MBZ] OT, FBM Buyers

2023-07-10 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I get fake text messages from time to time, baiting me to reply. This
would confirm that I have a legit cell phone number which I suppose the
scammers can sell to other scammers. Typical msg: "How have you been?
Long time no see".

2023-07-10 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I dug into this a bit and apparently the usual scam is they want to get your
phone number and then they will try to port it or set up a Google Voice account
for that phone number. When the confirmation code gets sent to your phone, they
will ask for it to "verify you are authentic" or some such reason. If you send
them the code then they can take over your phone number.

I never give my phone number out unless absolutely necessary, which is very
rare. For that I've got a Google Voice burner number.

There are no fees on FBM that I am aware of, so it's not a means of skirting
them as far as I know.

Yeah, that’s the big thing on the fake book right now. Mine said somewhere
like, “I don’t use Facebook so please send me your phone number.”

I don't know what the scam is but perhaps they will want to conduct the
transaction outside of the FBM, thereby avoiding selling fess (if any?) or
skirting any buyer fraud protection that FBM may offer.

Or maybe they want just your phone number to start harassing you with text
message and robocall scams. Phone number by itself should not be *too*
valuable, but a known working/active phone number is worth more than a random
one.
