To me Fry's is not what it used to be. I remeber the old days when I
had business in the Bay area making the pilgrimage to Fry's just to
gawk at all the electronic components and sub-assemblies for sale. The
Fry's near me here in Austin now is just another big box consumer
appliance reseller ala Best Buy and Circuit City. Selection of the low
level bits and pieces has fallen way off.

i'm not impressed by fry's here in gwinnett. little sales help and none of
it competent. you have to wait on line 3 times to get anything (first a
line to pull the part, then to pay, then pass through security). i've only
been there once and that was one time too many.

The one in Houston (Sugar Land actually) has a lot of geek kids working
there, they build computers and write software in their sleep. I was
there a few weeks back, wandered over to the telescope/camera section,
some older guy asked me if I wanted help. Turns out he was a high
school physics teacher and amateur astronomer, liked working there to
sell good stuff to people with good advice, get a discount, and make a
few bucks. Once he sorta figured out I knew a bit, it was hard to get
away from him -- TMI!

It amazes me how quickly things become obsolete - even now that PCs have
become as common as
TV sets - you mention the LP sized floppies which are long gone - after
them the 5-1/4 came and went in favor
or the 3.5. Now, the 3.5s are disappearing from new puters - only CD/DVD
drives are available.
I guess in the near future only flash drives wll come with new puters.

I bought a coupld 4gb flash drives for $22 each - awesome little creations.
I am almost overwhelmed when I
consider what these 4Gbs represent - back in 87 I worked for a major
chemical/fibers co in the cost department.

there wasn't a pc in site - then the 8088s began to dribble in and the HDs
measured in MBs. we often had to remove one program to run another.

Now the TBs are available for $200? I;m sure the price will be close to
$100 within a year.

BTW, what comes after TB? a 1000 TBs is what?

I know from reading the mails that a lot of you are interested in
electronics, and always looking for a source and a good price. Many
  of you may know
 of Fry's Electronics _www.outpost.com_ (http://www.outpost.com) but
  since they
only have stores in the largest cities, many may not. Frys runs
  several ads
a week and the one on Friday is 8 pages big, viewable on line.

Noted tonight is a 1TB internal hard drive for $199.95 by Maxtor.
  order #
5524820. Or a 500 GB external drive for 114.99, by Western Digital.
  order #
 5530040.

The one Terabyte hard drive caught my eye because I used to be Chief
Engineer of a computer facility for a major insurance company. I
  remember taking
tours through our facility and speeling about our 2.3 Terabyte
  network, a
16,000 square foot room with spinning hard drives (multiple discs the
  size of a
dinner plate), and main frames, consuming 600 KW of conditioned,
uninteruptible power! Another 400 KW was consumed to provide
  cooling for said room!
 Hardware value--about 60 million dollars!!

The staff to program and coordinate these resources approached 200.
  Now you
can lay down $200 and plug this drive into your home PC! Incredible!

Mitch,

You are thinking of JER, John Robbins, @MS State.? He also had a 116 diesel.

The hard drives with the big platters were of various makes, but we had them
into the 90's.? We also had reel to reel tape drives past Y2K, as we had to
maintain equipment that could communicate with archaic state computers.?
Arkansas comes to mind (sorry Clintons, et all).
