I may get this wrong as I have never been there, but my wife was in DC a few
years back on business and got on some
sort of tour bus thing that went around to various sites. My recollection is
that one could get on and off this
wherever and whenever and then catch a later one when it came by on
Gray Line Tours. They're all over the place.
They do a nice night tour.
National Cathedral. Check out their Web site, as it
has a boatload of multimedia stuff about the place,
especially some cool video tours. It took literally
years to build the place, mainly due to funding (or
lack thereof)
hasn't been delayed 4 hours. You don't need to ask how I know.

You must not be aware that DC has very strict gun control laws, perhaps
the
most strict in the nation, so there is nothing to fear there.

yeah, that was the most shocking thing to me that instead of going into the
building and getting the shooter, they ate donuts on the perimeter, asked
people 200 yards from the building to produce ID and then just waited for
the shooter to kill himself.

You must not be aware
Jump on the Metro and go into DC - all the museums are free and really
cool. You will also need to see Arlington Cemetery, the monuments, the
Capitol, White House, etc. And go down to Georgetown for some good
drinks and eats and drinks. It is all easy walking or Metro or cabs are
cheap.
Georgetown.

Every time I visited DC, which used to be a couple of
times a year, I always went to the National Archives
to view the Bill of Rights and Constitution for the
very first stop. A very, very powerful place. The
Vietnam Vet's memorial is good, too, but people don't
seem to be as respectful around
The Smithsonian Museums. Should keep you occupied most of the free
time you have. Also the Irish Pub in Alexandria is great, so is the
Greek restaurant down the street.
The National Gallery is worth some time, too.
Williamsburg is just down the highway, that's fun too.

Sunil,
I lived in the DC/MD/VA area for too many years until I retired in '99.
First rule is use the Metro. There is a Bethesda Stop. And pick
up one of the Metro Maps. The one fault w/the system is that
Georgetown didn't want/get a stop! Otherwise, it's all you need if
you just want
commitment for them, and is something well worth seeing.

What they all said. But if you find yourself OD'ing on the Mall and
getting claustrophobic in the City, there's some beautiful and quite
rural country out near Leesburg. Annapolis is a beauty of a town
that's just dripping with history. Charlottesville's worth a visit if
you can spare the time
Don't accidentally wander into southeast DC.

I disagree. If you are willing to walk a few blocks, the metro system will
get you almost anywhere you'd need to go (as a tourist). If the subway
doesn't go there, you can hop a bus at the subway stop.
I worked in DC for almost a decade and don't recall ever taking a cab or
driving to anything
I like the Metro stop in Georgetown. It's got one of
the longest escalators I've ever seen in my life. My
Dad was staying in Georgetown while he was being
treated for cancer at the university. I can remember
going up that escalator really trashed more than once.
It was awesome.
