Yeah I'm thinking I should tear into it and see if anything is obviously
broken, the door switch seems an obvious culprit.

I had one in the FROG that I think was my daughter's at some point in
some apartment, I pulled it out, cleaned it up, and plugged it in.  It
is a completely different brand but the control panel and housing looks
quite similar to the inop machine. I'm guessing some standard design is
stamped out by chinee factories in the millions so the bits are probably
all pretty much the same.

I recently had a Panisonic that failed to "wave" and after searching found
that one of the two door latch hooks had cracked [in an area hidden by the
door interior panel] which caused the safety interlock switch to register
as "door not closed" which caused a non function event.
$3.00 part .. $8.00 shipping ... 30 minutes to dismantle the microwave /
replace part / inspect for any other failed items... back to normal
function..
Good luck.

Vintage matters, the older ones are a lot more solidly constructed,
and easier to repair. The circuit is actually quite simple, usually a
timer, a few safety switches, and a magnetron tube circuit. My
Amana has blown the fuse a couple of times in the 30 years I've
been using it.

I had a door interlock mishap the other day, and our kitchen
microwave went dark. I pulled it out this morning, and found
its line fuse dead. (This is normal for the series when an
interlock 'fails'.) The fuse is abby-normal, so I pulled one
from the parts oven in the garage, and it's back in service.

I suppose someday I'll have to replace it, but this
Amana RR-6W is still going strong, and has only been
in service for 39 years. Built like a brick outhouse,
it's truly well-constructed inside. And heavy. If you
poke it hard enough to scoot it on the table you will
need a splint afterwards. And it doesn't beep, I like
that. To date it has needed:

1) New filter capacitors on the timer board
2) Interior lamp
3) Clean and reattach the door window glass
4) Line fuse

It was made 100% in the USA, by companies such as Amana,
Litton, Raytheon, Advance, etc.

I would call it the 240D of microwaves.

Yep I have one of them. When I bought it, it needed a new glass dish
in the bottom. THe dish cost 3 or 4 times what I paid for the oven.
I intend to keep it forever.

I also have the first MW we bought new. It is a litton, and was one
of the last with a timer and NO touchpad. I expect to keep it
forever too. It is 34 yeears old. I put a light bulb in it once. It
may get passed on to the next generation (TNG), as may the Amana.
I also have an old 2 speed kennymore small one. I like the two speed
for some things. It has a timer also. I have done NO repairs on it.

Is there any way the OE fuse holder could be replaced with a standard
fuse holder or a circuit breaker?

The fuse is really weird, it's soldered in, but the body
clips into a regular fuse clip. There are wires to the
fuse body clips too, and they're not exactly the same
as where the fuse is soldered in.

I'm sure it could be replaced with something else, but I'd
want a good schematic to look at before I'd really want to
do this.

I am thinking a jumper in place of the OE fuse, then mount a push
button circuit breaker

Long live the RADAR range!

So far, so good!

A guy I used to work with had an original Amana Radarange, the first
one to come out. Thing was about the size of a steamer trunk, weighed
about 150lb, and he said it worked like a charm many years on.

That's what ours is. Second version though, it has a glass touch
panel instead of a twist knob. Still working well, though I've had
to so some resoldering and replace an electrolytic capacitor or two
in the electronic timer. Built like a brick -house, extremely durable
construction. I'm impressed with it, it's the W115/B52 of microwaves.

The glass tray spontaneously cracked in half. We heard it, the
microwave
wasn't even being used. Loud. I used Shoe Goo to glue it back
together.

Still holding. I have a spare oven in the garage, with every part
_except_ that tray!
