I think USAA opened it up to spawn of spawn a number of years back. #1 boy has

Well, and _former_ dependents. At age 62, I'm not really dependent upon
anyone now...

I've had a few cars totaled by State Farm, and they always gave me what I
thought was fair market value.

My dad had a real battle with Allstate on the value of a car they wanted to
total, but that was over 30 years ago now. He did finally get them to agree to
pay for repairs.

Have you gotten quotes from Hagerty? You might find them to be surprisingly
affordable, and the policy is a guaranteed value policy. You’ve got to have a
regular “daily driver” for every driver in the household, which it sounds like
you do, but otherwise your cars might qualify. It’s often cheaper than a
regular policy with collision and comp, and it has a guaranteed value. A
regular policy with collision and comp would still mean a battle with the
insurance company over the vehicle’s value.

They told me over the phone the reason for the rate hike -- unrelated to
the choice of vehicles. BTW, the most valuable car in my garage is worth
maybe $14K on a good day.

Not true, or so it would appear. At least not for the insurance business:

"There was a period of time between September of 2009 and the Fall of 2013 that
USAA did allow civilians to apply for restricted membership. They were allowed
to use the investment services and many of the bank deposit services. The
property and auto insurance products, however, were not made available to
anyone outside of the military or their dependents.”

I have been procrastinating for a while about shopping around as both of our
houses have doubled in price over the last 3 years or so. Went from about $1800
a year to almost $5k a year. Had to raise the deductible to something like $6k
just to keep it around $4k a year. I did shop around a while back and found I
could save a significant amount on the houses, and the cars could be covered
full coverage for less than I am paying USAA for liability. I need to get back
