Did brakes on my Galant and lower radiator hose on Diamante this
weekend. No beer, but rest was close enough. *sighs*

And since I'm typing and in a complaining mood anyway still need
a radiator, as the cause of the blown hose was the corrosion in the
radiator to begin with, which probably means I might as well go ahead
and change the water pump and thermostat, for good measure since
corrosion is in engine block and heater core as well better replace
core and all other hoses. Wonder if I can pressure wash the block
with fresh coolant / water before allowing what is currently in block
into new core and radiator.

Maybe I'd better pay to have it done, ay?

You could do a Prestone flush (alkaline) (removes oils) followed by a citric
acid flush (ala MB) (removes scale) then flush with LOTS of water SEVERAL
times.

Out of curiousity, what kind of pump would I use to circulate the
 Prestone and Citric Acid?

WATER and citric acid.

I'm assuming (and we all know how destructive that can be) that I will
have removed the radiator and heater core by this point, as I know at
least the radiator can not be saved. (Thing leaks like pasta in a
collander) Or do I need to try and run this through the entire existing
system? Before replacement parts are ready to be installed? Though that
seems like it would flush scale from places that are going to be scraped
anyway should a google of radiator flush help here, or do I need
 more info?

I'm in a similar situation (though my radiator doesn't leak), and I'm
going to flush the system with the old radiator installed and then change
over to the new radiator. You want to put in the citric acid and water and
then run the engine.

Quick Google yielded a MBZ part number for Citric Acid Powder?

The lemon juice is Citric Acid powder sold by Mercedes-Benz. A member on
this list mentioned it this summer and I went and bought some. There is no
part number on the bottle and no instructions. The first time I used it, I
dumped the whole bottle in (27.00$ worth cdn) and wasn't too impressed with
it although there was better improvement with it then any other product. For
the drive, I added three table spoons worth, within a 100 kms, you should
see the mud in there, it really moved stuff around and no more running hot
 or gurgling on shut down.

Hi-

The MBZ Part No. for Citric Acid is 000-989-10-25.

The procedure is to drain and flush the system and then refill with water
and the acid powder dissolved in 1 qt. or liter of warm water. You then have
to get it up to operating temperature and hold it there for 20 to 30 minutes
while running the heater.

WARNING: If the only thing between your system and leaking is calcium
buildup, this will remove the calcium, and you will get leaks!

If you really want to go crazy, MBZ has a separate de-oiler product that
removes oil and grease from your cooling system: 001-986-21-71

WARNING: After using either or both of these products, you MUST flush at
least three times with clean water, running the system to operating
temperature for 20 to 30 minutes with the heater on. Residue from either
will prematurely age new antifreeze coolant.

Done right, either is a half-day job, both eat up a whole day, and also
generate a lot of waste water, which is why the dealers never do it, they
just use the machine which allegedly pushes in new coolant and pushes out
the old coolant. My one experience with that was a never again. The idiot
kid the dealer had running the machine didn't know that you had to open up
the heater core valves, so the new coolant was contaminated with 1.5L of
old. At that point I said let me do this myself and right.

I am mulling over doing it again and putting in the Xerex Extend that you
put in full strength and is good for three years.

It's loaded with something :) It's a beautiful sea foam blue green
color both inside and outside the radiator.

Yeah, me and Frank are on a first name basis. Actually, it gets even
worse. My dealership loves me so much, that a newer service writer
that has only seen me a couple of times in my Green Galant (which is
the car that does get seen the most) saw me in this silver Diamante
for the first time and knew me by name. Didn't even ask any questions.
I handed her the keys to the car, told her I needed the radio code and
an oil change, and walked away. Mr. Booher, your car is ready.
*sighs* The cashier even said In again? Let's see how much it was
today. When the service manager walked me over to pay. (He came in
because I was not very happy at the time, and he was trying to smooth
things over.)

I think I've paid a few tuitions. At least for a semester or two.

I strongly suggest you pay attention here lest you find yourself
homeless..s'pose you could live in your broke-down benz.
Cooling systems are not that sensitive. Drain the radiator and block,
refill, run, do it again then use a proper cooling system flush,
following directions along the way. Not even close to rocket science
but effective.
I think Rusty sells Tang or some other citric powdered drink, there
are a few write-ups on the subject.

94 Mitsu Galant LS
94 Mitsu Diamante LS
03 Mitsu Galant ES
and just missed a 70 108 in WA but there will be others.

I would flush the current system before removing any components.

It is a shame that we can't find the old DuPont No. 7 flush anymore. It really
worked well on the old iron blocks.
