Re: [MBZ] OT - A True Land Yacht

2023-05-26 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Well, the point was to reduce fuel consumption, and lower speed does indeed do
that EXCEPT in some trucks with engine like screaming Jimmies where the RPM
doesn’t match up well.

Gotta remember that 70 mph speed limits were actually a fairly new thing in
1973, most two lanes were 65 or less (in most states the non-highway roads are
45).

Greatly reduced the fatality rate too, which has been climbing again, and is
getting as bad as it was per mile in the 1970 even with much, much safer cars.

The problem with raising speed limits is that increases result in exponential
increases in actual vehicle speed. Go from 55 to 60 and the average speed goes
to 65-70, raise it to 70 and the average speed goes to 85. raise the limit to
75 and the average speed goes up to 90, with drivers weaving in and out at much
higher speeds. Gotta be safe to drive 120 if the posted limit is 70, right?

I was not onld enough to really be paying attention to the justifications at
the time of the change, but what I do recall was 55MPH being about saving fuel
due to supply limits, not for environmental reasons. Those were also the days
where we wore coats in class during the winter because the schools kept the
heat turned down, and they had half the lights shut off, etc.

My former 1964 Fleetwood 60 Special with a 390 and a THM “Jetaway 200” would
get in the mid to upper teens if you drove like an egg was under your foot.
Stomp it and just watch the gas gauge go down…

I had to chuckle! Mrs. Dan and I like to watch Perry Mason, and the other night
I was watching this guy drive a 1960s era car off a car lot, and you could just
see the body swaying all over the place, like it was on a cloud.
