So you have the smth shift without the benefit of the lower
RPM when driving. I wouldn't want an 85 transmission unless there
were no other options.

I don't know about the W123 trannies (mine was manual) but it's easy to
change the shift "hardness" on the W124 auto-trannies. Pull of a rubber cap
on the vacuum modulator, pull the "T" out with needle nose pliers, turn it
a notch or two, push it back in, put the rubber cap back on. Drive it to

So I must have the best of both worlds, an 83 300TD that has an
85 differential in it. I do like that for the lower RPM on the
highway but it does impact just slightly on the acceleration. The
mileage seems to be very slightly better with the 85 diff but
then it may be just that I've slowed dow

Not everyone. I like the '85 123. It is the most refined of all of them, and it
had the best gearing.
Usually, the last model year(s) of a production run are the best. The 210's
bear this out also, I believe.

Klima is what it looked like - heater controls, correct?
So Stu likes the '85 and everyone here says no. Interesting.
Did anyone want links to the pictures?

I have a few of the 123 chassis. And I regret the purchase of the
two that are '85. Too many fiddly bits, extra part

Especially if one owns one of the infamous CA version '85 W123
turbodiesels... These models have several unique parts that are getting
scarcer by the day.

The 85 may be the best (technically) but it is an orphan in that it is
incompatible (in a few ways) with earlier models and (in many ways) with newer
models. I would think this problematic for long-term ownership and parts
availability.

and much better. Traditionally served with glogg dur
That's correct - the '85 transmission had over 200 improvements, according
to folklore.
