When you install the new drain plug, clean the threads in the pan [maybe
even a blast of brake cleaner] then coat the plug threads with Never Seize.
Next time you drain the oil, the plug will come out.
I've been doing that trick with steel drain plugs that go into aluminum
manual transmission

I bought Irwin sets of Metric and SAE when they were on sale at Advance
and I had a $35 off on $85 coupon I wanted to use.
Great job

Nice. I have a set of those, I don't remember ever using them although I must

I tapped it firmly onto the rounded bolt head and then attached a ratchet to it
and turned. It bit into the head of the bolt and broke it loose immediately.
Very impressed.

Attaboy!
I (on the other hand) use a Topsider (it's actually an "oil boy") all the time.
When I had boats with inboard engines, a topsider-like device was the only
sane way to change engine oil. Once, very long ago, I drained it into the
bilge and I'll never do that again.

How did you use it? Did you pound it on, or just twist it on?

I used a 5 gallon fuel can and an old house tank vacuum cleaner for a

The w124 diesels are a different animal from w123. Finned aluminum pan that is
not straightforward to remove and probably expensive as hell.

I’m not a huge fan of the topsider. I have one and the pump failed and I
remember it taking forever to drain!

Why not replace the drain pan? I bought one for $28 IIRC.

I wouldn't think it likely that you will set the engine oil on fire in
the length of time it would take to weld something onto the plug. Why
not use a Nut rather than a socket. Just hold it up there with vice
grips and weld in the middle of the nut.

Since the drain plug head is already destroyed, I'd try one of those
sockets meant for removing rounded-off bolts. They have teeth that bite
into the fastener, and I've had good luck with them. Available at Harbor
Fright or probably any big box store.

Not enough there to get a vicegrips on it?
