The thermostatic idle air valve on our 450SL needed re-adjustment with a hammer. The plug in the body had started working out, meaning it no longer was all that thermostatic. You could adjust it for cold-start. Or warm running. But not both. After the 'hammer cure', it worked properly again.

True story. In my experience the servo did a surprisingly good job, until it started to leak coolant. An impressive concept (all mechanical) but poor implementation. Unfortunately, the plastic shell and a seal were prone to leaks and cracking, critical parts were not replaceable. Jim Cathy

Sure that is a possibility but by now they have all pretty much been fixed. The original 14 heads are ok as long as you don’t get them hot, but that pretty much goes for any of the revisions either, don’t get them hot. My daily, well weekend, driver has a 14 head but Curley has it rebuilt I

I know that the later HVAC ACC II systems are designed to default to defrost with any major fault of the control system, so I'd be suspicious of the main push button unit in the dash, but that may not be the case for this system. Somewhere I have a schematic for this system. -- Max Dillon

Yes, I like my 116. It's a 1980 300SD with about 425,000 miles. I did finally have to replace the tranny and it's ok now. The main gotcha' is the Chrysler servo. I never had one leak, but the gears break and stick. There's an electronic replacement for it. It should have the newer glow
