Re: [MBZ] Todays 116 update

2022-12-19 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
The thermostatic idle air valve on our 450SL needed re-adjustment with a hammer.
The plug in the body had started working out, meaning it no longer was all that
thermostatic.
You could adjust it for cold-start. Or warm running. But not both. After the
'hammer cure',
it worked properly again.

IIRC when 'bad' it looked stepped on top, because the body plug, which should
have
been flush with the housing, protruded a bit. I think I used a socket to fit
over the middle
part, and a hammer to drive the socket in (gently!) until the outer part of the
plug was flush
with the body.

Roger,
How cold? Below zero F a 61x engine gets iffy where a 60x has no problem. At
-20F I've never had a 61x start unassisted although others have reported it can
be done. I've never seen a 60x not start when cold except when my last 190D had
water in the fuel. It started after a couple hours with a 100W light bulb next
to the fuel filter...

2018-03-04 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
True story.
In my experience the servo did a surprisingly good job, until it started to
leak coolant. An impressive concept (all mechanical) but poor implementation.
Unfortunately, the plastic shell and a seal were prone to leaks and cracking,
critical parts were not replaceable. Jim Cathy compiled a great deal of ACCII
data on his website for anyone interested:

Over an earlier 617 powered 126? More power, about the same or better mileage,
no valve adjustments needed, belt easier to mess with than the multiple belts
on the 617, starts easier in cold weather, the car has updated trim that is
nicer.

Sure that is a possibility but by now they have all pretty much been fixed. The
original 14 heads are ok as long as you don’t get them hot, but that pretty
much goes for any of the revisions either, don’t get them hot. My daily, well
weekend, driver has a 14 head but Curley has it rebuilt I believe when he had
it.

I know that the later HVAC ACC II systems are designed to default to defrost
with any major fault of the control system, so I'd be suspicious of the main
push button unit in the dash, but that may not be the case for this system.
Somewhere I have a schematic for this system.

Plan on buying and installing the electronic conversion for the crypsler

exerience, but I think the defrost only means that the servo is stuck.

With the A/C not working, it could be:

- the compressor,
- the condenser,
- the evaporator,
- the expansion valve,
- bad o-rings some place, or,
- bad hoses.

I think the heat going only on defrost would be related to the Chrysler
servo. What does that servo do?

Does this have the mono-valve that is hard to get diaphragms for? Would
the vacuum-operated dashpots, the fixing of which would require removing
the dash, be a cause of the heat not going elsewhere?

OK.

I called the fellow.

He said he hasn't driven it for a while, so its characteristics are not
front-most in his mind.

I asked him about the heat and A/C.
He said the A/C doesn't work.

He started the car and said that
the heat had defrost only.

He said the engine runs great,
but puts out black smoke when it's cold.

He said he never paid attention to the fuel mileage.

He said he put in a used transmission after replacing the seals.
He said it works well.

Re: [MBZ] Nice 116

2018-03-03 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Yes, I like my 116. It's a 1980 300SD with about 425,000 miles. I did finally
have to replace the tranny and it's ok now. The main gotcha' is the Chrysler
servo. I never had one leak, but the gears break and stick. There's an
electronic replacement for it. It should have the newer glow plugs. However,
MB was playing with the 116 diesel and I found that the 78, 79, and 80 all have
slightly different glow plug relays and they are different from the 126 or
newer 123 relays. My 80 still has the original exhaust system, IP, and most
other parts, never had the head off. I replaced the leather seats and pads
about 20 years ago, otherwise only minor things. My son in law painted it
about 12-15 years ago because the clear coat was going, it's the champagne /
gold color.

This car looks pretty good, but not $5K good. The interior is nice, but you'd
need to look under the seats to see if the glue and horse hair are separating
yet. At that mileage, it should have a lot of life left. Check that the
heat/AC work and check the windows...the lifts tend to go bad, not expensive,
but a slight PITA to replace the lift or the motor.

If really interested, send me any questions. I'd be happy to help.

Best Wishes,

Roger

There are a few minor differences I noticed.
One of them is the vacuum pump.

these pumps interchangeable?
I like to keep mine since it just got rebuilt and I have no idea what
the life span of the older double piston type may be.
The other thing is the aircleaner. The 116 has no oildrain from the
aircleaner to the pan, thus the pan does not have a hole/connection
for it. I was thinking of swapping the pans, but questioning if the
drain is a must. What if I plug the hole in the aircleaner? The deain

Curt,

Yo surely have every reason to keep the woman and leave the house! She

sounds great!
Would you consider paying up for an Arizona rust free sun yellow 116
diesel
that looks great, runs great, and has had many, many things rebuilt or
replaced over the 20 years that I have had it. It should travel well
with no
additional work but who knows! I think it is worth $4500. The engine
has about
20,000 miles on a serious rebuild that should run for a long time. I
have
receipts for new parts and machine work totaling over $2700, I did all
the
labor. Same with the AC, the driveshaft, motor mounts, etc., etc, etc.
The
palomino gold interior looks really good and the seats have been
removed and
renovated, with new horsehair pads in back. Front and back bumper
skins and
rubber replaced, new headlight surrounds (with spare Euro headlights.
The 100
watt US headlights may be the best you will have ever seen and I can't
justify
changing to the Euros).

No trailer hitch though! And it is not clear if you were thinking
diesel
power.

I am getting past the point where I can keep maintaining my fleet, and
must
consider parting with my baby.

You would be first in line.

Wow Jim, would I ever!

Unfortunately I don't think its in the cards right now. Even if the house
falls through, which it looks more like every day that they sit on our offer,
it would be several months before we'd be ready to move on anything, maybe even
next summer. While it'd be relatively easy for me to take a leave of abscence
from work my wife owns her business and we'd have to rig up things to run
without us and not run us into the poor house. Its doable but it'd take time to
set right. So for now its dreams mostly.

The engine
has about

  *SNIP*

You would be first in line.

Regards
