Thanks to all for the input.

I did obtain the VIN of the '82 240D that the engine is currently sitting
in.
It's: WDBAB23AXCB314258

If anyone would run a CarFax on it, that'd be great.

 Listers,

The wheels of action are finally grinding to a start in the
 resurrection

 of
my 83 240D. I'm planning on purchasing a used engine tomorrow from
 Tri-Star
in PHX. My auto is at the shop in Tucson, and awaiting shipment of the
 engine.

Question: How can one really know that the proclaimed mileage on a used
engine like this is anywhere near accurate? It would be in the best
 interest
of the crooked parts outfit to claim to be selling a nice low-mileage
engine, yet actually to deliver their highest-mileage engine. They are
claiming to be selling me their lowest mileage 240 engine, but as I
said,
 it
would take some genuine honesty not to pull a bait switch.

I know there's probably no answer to this question, but what have you
all
found in your experience? Bear in mind that I am no where near this
outfit
geographically and thus cannot do any physical investigation.

Looks to be a import as well. You might want to get back to tri star and ask
them about the mileage. Does carfax make mistakes like missing out a zero on
the end. I would not believe that the 240D has only done 10Kmiles, even 105k
miles is a bit low for an 82.

On the other hand it checks out as being wrecked in the middle of 05.

Mitch,

Maybe that's what's throwing me off. I have been driving my 900 around
exclusively so much that I forgot that most older cars (like my '68 Dodge
for example) have only a five digit odo. Nice to hear that a fellow Dieseler
also owns Saabs. What kind'ya got? I was very pleased to recently achieve
34.9 MPG highway in my 84 900 notchback.

Oh yeah, as to the odo issue: Yes, it is quite coincidental that I would
find the similar figures - 10,504 and 105,xxx. It does make me think that
someone has slipped a decimal. The guy at Tri-Star claims that 105,xxx is on
the odo.

Yeah, it does show a junk title approximately at the time that TriStar
claims to have gotten it into stock. Strangely, it shows registration in Las
Vegas, but TriStar claims it had an AZ title when they got it. I suspect
there was something fishy going on with that title. But I'm not to adept at
