I'm looking for tips on polishing slices. I have a few NWA slices from Ebay that show saw marks, and have been using various grits of sandpaper to smooth the surface, but while I get a smooth surface, it still has a dull, matte appearance to it. I have grades of sandpaper from 60 to 220,

Hi Darren, I would consider 220 grit to still be pretty coarse for the purposes of sanding chondrites. I always go to at least 400 and often 800. For chondrites that are hard enough, you can even go to 1500 (the coarsest polishing grade). But sanding also darkens the appearance of most

Hi Darren, I polish all my meteorite slices, endcuts, windowed meteorites with sanding paper by hand. I begin at 80 grit and then polish with 120,220,400,800,1000,1500,2000,3000 grit sanding paper. A long hard work, but the result is like a dream. This does not work with friable material.

Disagreement ! I also lay the sanding papers on a flat glass which has the same effect of producing a flat surface on the sample. I do not have rounded edges on my specimens. Also it is wrong to move the face of the probe in circles. You have to describe an 8 when moving the sample across the

Have you considered grits used for rock tumbling? They come in all the mentioned grades and inexpensive. Bill I just cant find any powders on eBay, but from my point of view powder is more cheap in use. For example 500g of every grid cost below 10$ and this will be enough for years for person
