Looks to me like vaporization of impactor, the bits
falling back to ground several hundred kilometers
away.
I think there will be a search for an iron impact in
that range. Maybe survivals of fossil irons, ala
Canyon Diablo, but Canada is not as dry as Arizona.

The new impactite layer has been demonstrated - there
is nothing "assumed" about it. What is being done now
is trying to figure out the exact timing and effects
of the holocene start impacts. My guess right now is
that they fundamentally altered the North Pacific
Currents, but we
only KT impactite samples that I have seen were at
the Smithsonian, and came from the deep sea bed. But
we've all seen the impactite layers from Italy that
the Alvarez's sampled.
