Dear List and Tom; How about since we purchase meteorites by the gram, that someone suggest to the gentleman that he include a gram weight. An additional thought, see what pieces of allende are selling for per gram and put a price in that neighborhood. Since dimensions are an approximate, and his $50 is thereseems high at a glance to me, if I new the grams and had time to check out other allende selling prices I could probably tell you it may be high priced and lacking enough information. Is it a whole specimen or a fragment? Fusion crust.Maybe some one could send him this thoughtor not, only the strong survive. I see no IMCA logo, although is feed back is ok, do we trust not to buy an odd meteorite from anywhere that is labeled Allende? By the pictures, it could be a piece of roasted California dwelling that is being auctioned. That is just my opinion and I am unanimous in that. In my book "Meteorites Gone Awry" by world famous author "Whosagonna Believeme", the meteorite Pinto Mountains, L6, California, was found in 1854 by gold seeker Pinto Jones while digging for Pinto beans near high noon in the rugged Pinto Mountains. This 17.92 kg meteorite was shaped like a large bean with a brown crust. It is well know that upon digging up the meteorite Mr. Pinto Jones exclaimed "Hot dang, I gotta me a big bean!" So as you can see, the Meteoritical Highsociety had no choice but to name the meteorite "Pinto Mountains". I hope this helps in your search for misinformation on this fabulous meteorite. [meteorite-list] Sedimentary Rocks As Martian Meteorites??
The below research is interesting in that, if sedimentary deposits have accumulated in various parts of Mars, some of them might have become lithified enough to survived being blasted off it by meteorite impacts. As a result, Martian meteorites quite different from the igneous rocks normally recognized as meteorites might possibly exist. Yours, Paul Baton Rouge, LA Distributary Fan: Smoking Gun Evidence for Persistent Water Flow and Sediment Deposition on Ancient Mars MGS MOC Release No. MOC2-543, 13 November 2003 http://www.msss.com/mars_images/moc/2003/11/13/ This week, the journal Science has published online (in Science Express) the most recent MOC discovery: an ancient, eroded, and exhumed sedimentary distributary fan located in a crater at 24.3°S, 33.5°W. A distributary fan is a generic term used by geologists to describe a family of deposits that includes river deltas and alluvial fans. Sometime in the distant past, when it was still possible for liquid water to flow across the martian surface, sediments transported through valleys by water formed a fan-shaped deposit in a 64-kilometer (40 miles) -diameter crater northeast of Holden Crater. What is important about this discovery? First, it provides clear, unequivocal evidence that some valleys on Mars experienced the same type of on-going, or, persistent, flow over long periods of time as rivers do on Earth. Second, because the fan is today a deposit of sedimentary rock, it demonstrates that some sedimentary rocks on Mars were, as has been suspected but never clearly demonstrated, deposited in a liquid (probably water) environment. Third, the general shape, pattern of its channels, and low topographic slopes provide circumstantial evidence that the feature was actually a delta--that is, a deposit made when a river or stream enters a body of water. In other words, the landform discovered by MOC may be the strongest indicator yet that some craters and other depressions on Mars once held lakes. and Malin, M. C., and Edgett, K. [meteorite-list] Meteor Crater Stock
Hello all- I have located a rarer-than-hens-teeth Meteor Crater Exploration and Mining Company stock certificate that will be held in a live auction in Reno on December 13. It is one of the blue preferred stock certificates signed by Brandon Barringer, Daniel's son. I have one myself already and just thought I would pass on the info, won't be bidding. It is lot number 149 and I am pretty sure you could set up an absentee bid or a telephone bid (really) with the owner of the company Fred Holabird at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 775-852-8822. It is in very fine condition but does have two holes punched in it as if it was once in a portfolio. I know when I was hunting them down, it took years to come across them and I haven't seen a single one since April 2001. I know one individual sells them in his catalog for over $700 and I think you could do better. The auction catalog shows a $400-600 est. value. Keep in mind a 15% buyers premium is added. A link to the history of the crater, including this failed mining attempt http://www.barringercrater.com/lite/impact/impact.htm Rocks From Space has a nice excerpt as well. Re: [meteorite-list] NWA 984 TKW
Title: Nachricht Hello Jose and List, In a perfect world you should be able to simply email the NomCom with updates and they would be added to the TKW but it does not work that way. They do print corrections in the Meteoritical Bulletin if properly submitted and the committee feels it is important enough to publish. Some problems are how would they be able to tell they really are paired without coordinates to the find? Since there is a considerable amount ofnew material to study and deadlines to pursue, how can scientists devote the time to report every suspected pairing when there is so much unreported materialthat needs to be announced? The laboratories are overwhelmedso it will be some time before the pairing situations are resolved. We feel it is up to the dealers to report pairings tocollectors when there is little doubt. We have been burned a couple of times thinking we had the largest specimen from a particular find just to have a bigger piece show up. These problems continue to be discussed so hopefully solutions will present themselves in the future. By the way, several scientists are working in collaboration to figure out pairings and TKWs for the new Mesosiderites. Re: [meteorite-list] Protecting Chondrites
Hello Vishnu and List, The best way we have found to cut thin sections from very friable material is to use a plastic ring. 1) Put the specimen on top of paper. 2) Place a plastic ring around the specimen. 3) Use the same optically correct expoxy used to attach specimens to slides to fill the ring around the specimen inside. 4) Let dry. 5) Cut the ring making sure to cut through the specimen trapped in the epoxy. 6) Proceed as normal. This method works great. [meteorite-list] Noe Garza Prologue
A while back I asked Noe Garza, of Park Forest fame, to do me a favor. I asked him to write his thoughts, his memoirs for me. Happily, he agreed. Sure, tell me what you want me to write This was the preprogrammed response Noe had been used to over the last few months, signed affidavits, documents to authenticate his meteorite fragments, whatever was needed to complete the transaction. He had become so accustomed to doing this that he figured I wanted something to verify my 27.5 gram fragment. Well Noe, that's just it, you write whatever you want. Don't give me what I want per se, give me what you want to be remembered from this experience. Be candid, be blunt, but be honest My request came with two stipulations: 1) If he was going to do it, I wanted it to be hand written. 2) I would not sell his words and if he wanted, I would keep it to myself alone. Furthermore, I encouraged his son Robert and wife Paulette to add their thoughts as well. I explained that this is why I collect. I have said it before, I collect stories, and meteorites make for good storytelling. Fear, wonder, opportunity, destruction, chance, humanity, science, this list goes on. This was a lot to ask, a big favor, but that is the kind of people the Garza's are. People do things for each other, and profit is not always a motive. Earlier this week it arrived, seven glorious handwritten pages, and a signed cover sheet affidavit (a leopard can't change all of his spots). With Noe's permission I now send his words along. They were freely given to me, I freely give them to you, but they are for personal use or UNADVERTISED freebies as you see fit. They are not to be used in conjunction with any sale in which their inclusion is a part of the package. I will be both upset and disenchanted if the Garza's intent is exploited, and the list will hear of it. That bit of ugliness said... [meteorite-list] A Letter From Noe Garza
As written by Noe Garza Again, this is for personal archive use only, use of this transcript to generate profit in any way is not authorized: On March 26, 2003 around 11:50 pm we the Garza's had an unusual thing happen to us. A very special gift from God. As I was growing up going to school, we learned a lot of strange things in space. I really did not care about meteorites or anything in that subject. Yes I had to learn to pass and get a grade. Never in my I thought of one hitting my house! One of the greatest things was meeting a lot of people. All the meteorite collectors and buyers. I became friends with some and still to this day we keep in contact via email. If you ask me some were really a little crazy but this is the way they make their living buying and selling. After dealing with the meteorite collectors and the media my life changed somewhat. I was able to buy things I could not afford. We made some changes to our home like a new kitchen, new floor in living and dining rooms. We also helped out our parents who are retired now. My son bought a bike and my other two sons who are married also received a little cash. My wife Paulette got a digital camera and as for me a beer tapper/cooler, I wanted that for years. And if you ask me if I miss the media around yes I do. Once in a while I run into some old friends and they talk about me being on TV. I was able to save a lot of media coverage newspapers and TV news video. I would like to thank Rob Elliot from the U.K. for buying some meteorites from me and still keeping in touch with us, Steve Witt from Indiana for calling me and bringing Rob Elliot to us. Greg and Adam Hupe for purchasing my damaged bedroom, both from Washington. Rob Wesel who sent us a DVD of the news coverage. It was also nice meeting Mike Farmer, Rob Haag, Allen Langheinrich, Steve Arnold, Edwin Thomson, Greg(ory) Wilson. Up to this day I have not stopped learning more about meteorites. I go online and do some research almost every day. I'm waiting to hear from some meteorite magazines that have written about us. This letter was especially written for Robert Wesel. Thanks Rob for everything. Noe Garza Rob Wesel -- We are the music makers... and we are the dreamers of the dreams. [meteorite-list] A Letter From Paulette Garza
As written by Paulette Garza Again, this is for personal archive use only, use of this transcript to generate profit in any way is not authorized: Robert, I have always been interested in the sciences and curious about comets, falling stars, etc. You don't know how surprised I was to discover our house had been struck by a meteorite. What are the odds of that! On March 26th shortly before midnight my son (Michael) and I were returning from the airport when suddenly the sky lit up. Looking up I saw a large ball of sparkly glowing light. Then just as suddenly the sky went dark with the exception of the glowing ball. It too slowly faded followed by continuous booming noise and streams of light flying through the sky. At first I thought it was fireworks but soon determined that it wasn't. To say the least this began to frighten me. Entering the house my husband said someone threw a rock through the window. I went upstairs to see not only a hole through the window but also through the roof and a big grey rock. I called 911 and was informed that they were not sure what was happening but that numerous reports were coming in. When the police and fire department arrived we were told that the rock may be radioactive. We were also informed that they were in contact with the FBI and NASA. The entire time I'm wondering what happens if the rock is radioactive. Of course I had visions of ET with the bubble around the house. You don't know how relieved I was to find out it wasn't radioactive. The following morning the media began showing up and to our amazement we discovered the rock was a meteorite. That day there was a constant stream of reporters and people who just wanted to see the bedroom. In the days and months that followed we had numerous calls and visits from collectors, museums, and meteorite enthusiasts. I know this may sound strange but I'm glad the meteorite struck our house. This experience allowed us to meet a lot of really nice people. I enjoyed talking to everyone and I learned a lot about meteorites. I especially am glad to have met Steve Witt, Rob Elliot, and Greg Hupe! Also, we sold the meteorite and were able to make a few home improvements, pay a few bills and help a few people. I will never forget this experience. Paulette Garza Rob Wesel -- We are the music makers... and we are the dreamers of the dreams. [meteorite-list] Garza letter eiplogue
Good stuff. The beer tapper/cooler really drove it home for me. We all have different wants in our lives, conveniences, perks. I spoke with Noe about this and the galactic symphony it took to manifest his beer tapper/cooler. A supernova, a nebula, gravity, time, and chance. That beer tapper/cooler was his long before he was born. Another great anecdote a few months ago from Noe that did not make the letter was the fact that one day a couple months after the fall, Noe awoke to thunder. He recalled to me his desperate wish, readying himself and speaking with an inner monolog Come on, I'm ready, come on! hoping it was another space rock headed his way. [meteorite-list] Re: Meteor Crater Stock
Rob, If I buy this stock certificate, does that mean I'll be a part owner in the company? I've always wanted to own Meteor Crater! ...And I'll be able to go prospecting too! Hey! You can't kick me off the property! See? I'm a part owner! :) - Bob Martino, Tucson, AZ Can you really name a star? Read the Truth! http://home.columbus.rr.com/starfaq/ . They really cap off one's Canyon Diablo presentation. Good luck Rob Wesel -- We are the music makers... and we are the dreamers of the dreams. Re: [meteorite-list] Garza letter eiplogue
Dear Rob; I am all warm and fuzzy inside. We have too few instances of people being genuine these days, and the Garza's exemplify the good in our humanity, and the idealism that good things happen to good people. Thank you, and the Garza family for sharing their feelings with us all. Sincerely, Dave Freeman Rob Wesel wrote: Good stuff. The beer tapper/cooler really drove it home for me. Very nice, but my favorite for beauty is another Saint... St. Michel, L6, fell 1910 in Finland. High Regards, Fred Hall
[meteorite-list] Re: Meteor Crater Stock
Bob, not only will you be part owner but you get a share of the profits from the Meteor Crater entrance fees! So you can retire and sit in the space capsule on site for hours on end. Look Maw, I'm going to the Moon! Imagine the look on friends faces when you tell them...I own a piece of the rock... that blasted a hole one mile across in the Arizona desert! Another fine idea, cut the stock certificate into thousands of tiny pieces and sell them on E-bay. You could call them "Bessy Certificates". Opps, sorry Dean, I let the cat out of the bag. Speaking of Dean, I wonder how his vacation is going? Is he back from the Far East yet? Haven't heard a thing from him in a while on this list. Happy Thanksgiving to All, Fred Hall

Re: [meteorite-list] Seven New Galaxy Class Meteorites on eBay

Regards Matteo --- Adam Hupe [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear List Members, Since one of the Galaxy meteorites sold this seller is offering seven more, only 299 left. It looks like this kind of seller figures since he sold one meteorite wrong why not sell seven? Who cares if he made the meteorites himself? This seems to be a pattern repeated time and time again. I remember about four years ago a seller who was selling hematite week after week as Arizona meteorites making thousands of dollars on poor unsuspecting buyers. He was told dozens of times these were not meteorites and continued to sell them anyway. I think people were too embarrassed to leave negative feedback which allowed him to continue for some time. Sometimes it is comical to see these offerings until several collectors or would be collectors get burned in the process, then the fun ceases.
