Elton ..Not fossil KFC chicken nuggets but some interesting crevices for small animals/microbes to hide in! if ya hungry? :) Anyone seen the latest 'Meteorite' magazine?, centre feature on Terrestrial look-alikes, there is a nice photo of a volcanic ash deposit, and spherical inclusions just like the ones in the mars photo!. Apparently volcanic ash can combine with water/vapor and turn into a ball. I wonder if the mars layered rock is going to turn out to be volcanic ash! I guess time will tell. Hi everyone, I have been reading "Dead Mars, Dying Earth" by John Brandenburg. In the book he discusses the oxygen ratios found in SNC meteorites matches C1 meteorites very closly...therefore, he believes C1 meteorites are martian in origin. Does anyone know more about this? Thanks, Jamie
[meteorite-list] Newbie Tucson report, part 1
Hi Sterling and List, Despite never having gotten on an airplane (I drove to/from Tucson), I'm still feeling a bit jet-lagged from the experience. I'm very glad I went as I finally got to meet dozens of people with whom I had previously only exchanged e-mail or phone calls. I left the L.A. area Thursday afternoon with the intention of staying on Ford Dry Lake (California) Thursday night, hunting it some Friday morning, and then continuing on to Tucson to arrive in plenty of time for the Harvey Awards and Birthday Bash. However, I was not impressed with the surface quality of Ford (puffy and sandy), so decided instead to drive straight on through to Tucson. Made some calls along the way to Geoff Notkin and Adam Hupe to see if anything would still be happening at 11 pm, and both suggested the Reeds' room at the Vagabond. Sure enough, seven or eight people were milling around inside and outside Blaine and Blake's room, including John Gwilliam and Bob Holmes. Mark Jackson, Howard Wu, Fred Hall and the Jensens may have been there too -- the nights all run together for me, and as we all spent a lot of time in the Reeds' room, it's hard to remember who was there on which nights! Around 1:30, everyone generously decided that Blaine and Blake needed at least 5 hours sleep ;-) after a solid week of 2am partying, so we said our goodbyes and I headed off to Willcox Playa to spend the night on the lakebed. I didn't get to sleep until after 3 am, as it is definitely more than an hour's drive to Willcox -- closer to an hour and a half by the time you figure out how to get on the lake. I awoke to subfreezing temperatures and frost on the ground at sunrise. I took one step out of the truck, and sunk in 2. Not good! It's not that the lake was mud, so much as it was puffy, damp clay. Evidently the only reason I had had no trouble driving on the lake at night was that it was FROZEN. At 7am it was thawing fast, and it was clear that if I didn't get off the lake pronto, I would be spending the next 18 hours there (until it refroze). I had some trouble getting rolling, but eventually rocked it out of my sunken tire marks and headed for the town of Willcox for breakfast. The next several hours were spent trying other approaches to the lake to see if drier sections could be found. Unfortunately, all of the other routes were either blocked by locked gates, or impassable with anything less than a 4WD Jeep (I drive a 2WD Pathfinder). I called Adam to let him know that a hunt on Sunday did not look at all promising -- two days of sunshine were not going to dry out Willcox that much. Disappointed, I returned to Tucson, checked into the Flamingo Hotel, cleaned up and headed back to the Vagabond. The usual suspects were there: Adam, Zann and Greg Hupe, John Gwilliam, Michael Blood and his wife, Fred, Bob Holmes, Howard, Mike Farmer, Mark Jackson, Kim Cathcart, Steve (birthday) Arnold, the Jensens and others (Bill Mason? John Divelbiss? Eduardo?) coming and going. I really wish I had taken more pictures, but I was having too much fun talking to everyone, swapping stories. I opted to get to La Fuente early (7 pm) in case parking was difficult, and the place was already packed. I asked the hostess to direct me to the Notkin/Arnold party section, but she said Geoff had called and wouldn't be arriving 'til 7:45, and that no one was back there yet. (I know now she had to be very much mistaken.) I spent 40 minutes and a couple Cadillacs in the bar (which does not have a line of sight to the entrance), and the only face I recognized was Jim Tobin's passing through about 20 minutes after I had secured a precious seat at the bar. I finally decided enough was enough and headed to the back. Sure enough, the place was packed! [Thanks, hostess.] To be continued... --Rob __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hello Everyone, My typically long show report is finished, and should be up on my column at MeteoriteTimes shortly. I won an item I believe at the Lang auction, if someone who has their e-mail address handy could forward this e-mail to themI would appreciate it. (I think I won the Guffey). I purchased a part slice of Tinnie (NM) in Tucson. It is a plessitic axatite. I know Taza is a plessitic octahedriteso now I wonder...what does plessitic mean? I wanted to get one of Dorothy Norton's Mammoth books at the auction but because I was working it, didn't find the chance. [meteorite-list] Spirit Rover Establishes New Mars Driving Record
http://www.spaceflightnow.com/mars/mera/040210spirit.html Spirit rover establishes new Mars driving record BY JUSTIN RAY SPACEFLIGHT NOW February 10, 2004 The rover Spirit drove into the Martian history books Monday night by making the longest single-day traverse on the Red Planet, eclipsing the mark set by Mars Pathfinder's Sojourner rover in 1997. Spirit cruised 69.6 feet (21.2 meters), shattering Sojourner's record of 23 feet (7 meters). The basic goal was drive as far as they could and see how things went in the time they had. They did very well, mission manager Jim Erickson said of the Spirit rover controllers. They used two different types of drives. A blind drive -- a pre-planned with no hazardous avoidance turned on -- for 13 meters. And then they performed a drive with a go-to waypoint. That second drive instructed the rover to drive from one point to another on its own, making a turn autonomously. Everything seemed to go fine there, Erickson said. Spirit is headed for a large crater in the distance called Bonneville. Exactly how long it will take to reach the target isn't known, but engineers hope the amount of driving will increase each day. Tomorrow's plan is further driving. The day after that is driving even further, Erickson said. I expect we are going to start out kind of slow -- although 21.2 meters is not that slow -- and built up as we get more experience in long-term driving. Spirit began roving late Sunday, leaving behind the first rock it examined. The craft moved 21 feet (6.4 meters), and simply drove over the pyramid-shaped Adirondack. The rover spent several weeks parked in front of Adirondack as the science instruments examined the rock, determining the mineral and elemental composition. The Rock Abrasion Tool then carved a small hole into Adirondack to remove the outer surface. It's really opened up a window into the interior of this (rock) that we can use to understand this rock really well, lead scientist Steve Squyres said. With the cutting complete, the Microscopic Imager, Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer and Mossbauer Spectrometer instruments then examined the RAT hole. What you are seeing there is a beautifully cut, almost polished rock surface, Squyres said, referring to the microscopic image. It looks very, very much like -- in the image -- a volcanic rock, a basalt. And, in fact, when we look at this with the APXS and Mossbauer, we find compelling compositional evidence that, in fact, what we are looking at is a volcanic basaltic rock. So the RAT has revealed the interior of this rock. We know what it is -- a piece of volcanic stuff. And it is time to move on. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hi List: I saw a big meteorite in ET's room at the Inn Suites with a sign listing it as the Main Mass of the Franconia meteorite. I think it wasfound on Super Bowl Sunday. The ink on the sign hadscarcely dried when I heard that a 7kg piece was found a few days later. I remember when Gold Basin first came out and the price was well north of $1.50 per gram. Before long, meteorite hunters decended on the Gold Basin strewnfield. Last time I checked on ebay, Gold Basin could be had for a quarter a gramon some auctions. [meteorite-list] Some Tucson Notes part 1 of 3
Dear List Members, In case any of you are interested we would like to share some of our Tucson show experiences. This will be part one of three. We arrived on the 29th where Steve Drummond met us at the airport, we then checked in at our hotel and immediately proceeded to the Reed's room where we ran into a few fellow collectors and dealers. Mike Martinez was on hand with cases of wine from California. Our first mistake was purchasing one of these cases and distributing it among those present. Needless to say, the next day everybody was operating under impulse power only. Also of note, fellow collector David Gregory made a big score (dare I say planetary) and shared his extraordinary find with all those present. It is an absolutely gorgeous find which we will formerly congratulate him on later as more details come in. The next day we hooked up with Mike Farmer and Jim Strope, mainly to see the new Martian Mike has been promoting (trying to rub our nose in). While visiting Farmer's and Eric Olsen's room I had a chance to look around and was actually impressed with their layout. I must say they did a great job of putting material together and displaying it in a very professional manner. We then got Jim to defect for awhile and look around the rest of the show. We spied a new lunar in a mineral dealer's room and could not resist the temptation. It looked just like Calcalong Creek prompting us to go for it. It consisted of three individuals, one of which was cut into slices exposing the white anorthosite clasts. We quickly put some funds together with Jim and flashed the wad under the dealer's nose who turned it down. The dealer's girlfriend mentioned wanting a new car and kept giving him the look to take the cash. We dug a little deeper and Greg laid the cash out in front of the dealer's girlfriend. They had a heated mini-conference and then the stones were ours, the girlfriend had won out. We quickly departed in case the non-meteorite dealer had a change of heart. Satisfied for the day we called it an early night. The next day we went to Eric and Silvia's room where we laid eyes again on Dhofar 378 with a TKW of only 15 grams. We decided it was time to acquire some of this unique Martian meteorite before there was none to be had. Three days of grueling negotiations we finally succeeded in making a trade. That's what happens when you take too long, they were not kidding about increasing the price a few years back. That evening we went to the Inn Suites Bar to watch the SuperBowl Game. Luckily we reserved a corner of the bar because over a dozen meteorite collectors and dealers showed up. Very little time was spent watching the game as everybody had meteorites on their minds. Later Robert Haag showed up and purchased a round of tequila shots for everybody. Not to be outdone Greg ordered a round of the dreaded Denver Death Cookies. Their deceptively tame oatmeal taste and the smoothness in which they go down hid the sinister amount of alcohol contained in each one. Before long more Death Cookies were ordered, then everybody began talking louder and the crowd became quite boisterous. One well known dealer even began to drool, not a good sign. The next day we noticed everybody was taking it easy. We are still tired from the pseudo-relaxing environment the Tucson show is supposed to provide and will follow up with one or two more parts. We will also post links to images later on. Re: [meteorite-list] Franconia Meteorite
Hello Randy and List From what I hear on the new Franconia Meteorite, it's different from the one found last yearaccording to ASU,I think this one is also an H4, several more kilos have been found so far, many stones. There are a few list members working on this find right now (not et meteorites group),they were trying to keep it a secret, but the words out. I may hear %#!$@ words back. From what I hear, the strewn field is large, I don't think it's asbig a GB, there mapping it right now,the stones are brown in color, but a nice visible 80% to 90%fusion crusted, most found on the surface. The ground is very hot in spots, as metal detectors go,lots of hot lava rocks all over the place. Meteorite canes work well. I'm sure thelist members who are hunting it right now, will beposting there claim soon to the list, with all the info and get the credit they deserve for this great new find. As to the price, supply and demand will win out, when the supply of Gold Basin is gone, the price will rise again, but with so many dealers and hunterwith many kilos, it may be a long time. This new stone is much nicer than the old Gold Basins, I'm sure the price will start out high, over $10 gram, from there who knows? It's one I must have! I'm glad many of you enjoy my photos of the Tucson show. Thanks for your comments, I had a great time taking them. Thanks again for your time.
