[meteorite-list] NWA 267 Meteorite $10.00 Liberia Coin
Hello list, Was wondering if anyone noticed the meteorite coin that has been listed a few times on ebay the last month for the first time. One coin is currently listed. It features a piece NWA 267, is made of silver and is a legal tender $10.00 coin in Liberia. One listed on ebay right now is item number 3944213561. The coin itself is very nice and shows a nomad? on a camel in the desert and a meteor cutting across the sky, back of coin has Liberia government markings and notes it is worth $10 dollars. The meteorite for the coin was supplied by me to a large bank in Liberia. One of the workers came up with the ideal and I sent him a few samples. The bank later made an order and these nice coins were minted. I do not know how many were made but if meteorite coins interest you, I would suggest getting one right away. The company is sold out and it was only a few months ago they were released. They offered me one below wholesale which I had passed, but I just e-mailed them and they came up with one for me, at the under wholesale price, which when you add shipping is over $100. Along with the coin you are suppose to get a certificate with a piece of the meteoritealthough it is possible that two versions exist...one without meteoritebut I don't know. The bank made a second order to put pieces on the certificate. Since I collect and sell coins somewhat, it is kind of neat to have supplied meteorite to a government bank to for coinage. And as a side note, this makes NWA 267 argueably, a little better. It being the first meteorite applied to a legal tender coin. [meteorite-list] Scientist Finds Moon Rock on Antarctica
http://www.timesdaily.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041130/APA/411300788 Scientist Finds Moon Rock on Antarctica The Associated Press November 30, 2004 University of New Mexico researcher Barbara Cohen now knows for certain that the rock she found while trolling the barren Antarctica landscape is special. She and a team of geologists picked up a chunk of the moon - one of only about 30 ever found on Earth. We found it almost a year ago, but the analysis wasn't finished until last month, she said. When I found out it was from the moon, I was so elated. The team knew it was something interesting in the field, but we couldn't test there. We just had to wait. Cohen is an assistant research professor at the UNM Institute of Meteoritics. She and a team of eight geologists collected the fist-sized meteorite on a six-week trip during the Antarctic summer, which is December and January. They were trolling the La Paz ice sheet on snowmobiles when they found it. Finding a meteorite is like finding a puzzle piece to the universe because each chunk tells scientists more about how other planets and asteroids developed, Cohen said. It's a real primal thrill of discovery, because no one has ever seen that rock before you, she said. If you know the rock you found is unusual, your mind just goes crazy wondering what it could be. It could be the first meteorite ever found from Venus, or it could be from the moon or Mars. Cohen's Antarctica trip was part of a National Science Foundation program to collect meteorites for the U.S. national archive. Scientists from all over the world are chosen each year to search Antarctic ice sheets for new meteorites, which fall on the ice and stick out in the snowy surroundings. Lunar meteorites are important because they give scientists samples from other parts of the moon, Cohen said. The rock, along with about 1,000 other meteorites collected on the same trip, were sent to Johnson Space Center in Houston, which separates the most interesting ones and sends them on to the Smithsonian Institution for analysis. After analysis, the samples go back to Houston, and the Space Center sends out notification to scientists who might be interested in the rock. The rocks of interest are broken up and shipped out to the planetary science academic community, Cohen said. About 95 percent of the meteorites we find are ordinary chrondites, from asteroids, so of the 1,000 we picked up, about 950 were pretty normal, she said. This was one of about 50 that were sent on to the Smithsonian - we knew it was something special when we found it. With the analysis complete, Cohen plans to apply to get a chunk of the rock back from Houston. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Pages 1029-1032. Several spherule layers in South Africa and Australia, with ages of ca. 3.4 to 2.6 Ga, have been interpreted as the result of large asteroid or comet impacts onto the early Earth. Some of these spherule layers show extreme enrichments in the PGEs, unlike modern ejecta deposits, which caused some questions regarding the initial impact interpretation. On the other hand, until now, no shocked minerals-the hallmark for all confirmed impact structures and ejecta-have been found in any of these spherule layers. Even rocks from the 2 Ga Vredefort impact structure contain abundant shocked minerals, so it is unlikely that Archean impacts would, for some reason, not produce shocked minerals. In the present work, Rasmussen and Koeberl document, for the first time, the presence of shocked quartz in a sample of the ~2.63 Ga spherule layer from the Jeerinah Formation (Pilbara craton, northwestern Australia). The survival of shocked quartz in ~2.63 Ga rocks, which have undergone multiple metamorphic events, suggests that their absence in other impact ejecta layers may not only be a question of preservation. The presence of shocked quartz in a layer containing melt spherules provides compelling evidence for an extraterrestrial impact with a target area that was at least partly silicic, favoring a continental impact site. In addition, enrichments in Ir and other siderrophile elements in the spherule layer indicate that they contain as much as 2-3 wt% of a chondritic meteorite component. If proposed correlations between the Australian spherule layer and similar South African layers are correct, then the combined ejecta blanket represents fallout from a single major impact with an areal distribution of 32,000 km2, which is among the largest yet documented in the Precambrian rock record. Thus so far the impact record on Earth is quite limited: nothing for the first billion years, then some spherule layers until about 2.5 Ga, and then some impact craters. Nevertheless, the discovery of these spherule layers aids in the discussion of the importance of impact events in the early parts of Earth's history. Clearly the early impact record on Earth, which spans more than half of the age of our planet, is still a wide-open field of research. --- Weathering of iron rich phases in simulated Martian atmospheres Vincent Chevrier, Univ. We evidence that the neoformed mineral phases are similar to the ones invoked in the Martian regolith according to spatial probes data (including the MER rovers). Therefore the occurrence of such phases (carbonate, sulfate, oxyhydroxides) can no longer be taken as an evidence for formation of these minerals in presence of liquid water and oxidants not present today (oxygen, acids, etc.). [meteorite-list] Meteorite sites now officially open
Hi there! The network of meteorite related sites is now complete and at your disposal. Five sites are ready and waiting for you to use them and to fill them. The main site is http://meteoritecollecting.com - it is the hub for the complete network. This is a site that will feature articles related to meteorites and announce new items on all the other sites. We are starting off with a first interview in a series where we present meteorite collectors all around the world. The first one to be featured is Norbert Classen from Germany. Please head over to meteoritecollecting.com and find the link to the interview on the right top of the site. Meteoritecollecting.com is also meant for those new to collecting meteorites, so I want to present articles for beginners there as well. What's a meteorite? What about classification? Where to buy? How to store them? Things like that. http://meteoritenews.com will be the place where news from the meteorite world will be presented. New finds/falls, new classifications and more. The news pace is slower in the meteorite community than in other fields, but we try to update as often as possible. http://worldofmeteorites.com is a discussion forum. From chitchat to serious questions - this is a place where a more structured discussion than here on the list can take place. Please head over, register and help me to make this place lively and interesting. http://metsale.com is the auction site for meteorite enthusiasts. It offers the same features as ebay, but does so without the costs of ebay. Once again: this is a site that will only show its potential when people use it. It's my offer, please take advantage of it. Finally, there is http://meteoritegallery.com. This is the place to show off your meteorites and to build a visual database of as many mets as possible. It is also host to SPACEROCKS INC.'s Meteorite picture of the day and allows you to have a place for your own collection. I have put a lot of work into these sites. I think that they, in total, offer something unique and new to the meteorite community. Funny enough, even to collectors of meteorites something new can be something scary. But please don't be shy. As I said: use these tools for you. And if you think these sites are a good idea and you want to contribute, these are some suggestions how to do it: 1) Upload pictures to the meteorite gallery. 2) Submit articles for meteoritecollecting.com 3) Volunteer to post news at meteoritenews.com (it's as easy as typing a mail) 4) Buy and sell at metsale.com - if you fear loss, make the start price the minimum you want for a piece. If you want to help to build traffic, have a courageous heart and start your piece at 0.01c :-). BTW, I have sold two pieces there already. One was a bargain, the second one was what I wanted for it. 5) Start discussing things at worldofmeteorites.com. 6) Carry a link to http://meteoritecollecting.com on your website or in your mail. The hub is made to distribute people to the various sites. Finally, have fun with what I have built. And let me know that you like what you see - not only verbally, but by using the sites and spreading the word... -- Best regards, Bernhard Rems -- Hub to the Meteorite Sites: http://meteoritecollecting.com Meteorite Auctions: http://metsale.com Meteorite Gallery: http://meteoritegallery.com Meteorite News: http://meteoritenews.com Meteorite Discussions: http://worldofmeteorites.com __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Yes, I've seen the ID show up many times on eBay ... running the price up on some nice specimens as well as some much more common pieces. I gave up on most almost immediately when they went so high. [meteorite-list] L4 regolit breccia ?
Hey Some more than a few days after Mr Hupe announce this strange L4 and I still looking for this mini micro pieces on ebay. Just maybe someone have a little bigger slice to show us (me) how looks non-lunar regolith breccia ? This will be in my opinion good idea to post also few photos of main masses or big slices for every meteorite that You announce on this list as new classified. :)) -[ MARCIN CIMALA ]-[ I.M.C.A.#3667 ]- http://www.Meteoryt.net [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.PolandMET.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.Gao-Guenie.com GSM +48(607)535 195 [ Member of: Polish Meteoritical Society ] __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] COOL NEW ACHONDRITE SALE NWA2226
This is nice. Look at the webpage for some really cool photos which are worth looking at even if you dont buy anything. This meteorite will get classified (And hopefully relitively soon to). I bought this thinking it was another piece of NWA1109 but after cutting it up I doubt it now although it is the same colour. This meteorite is very soft and I used up two saw blades cutting it up. It was a weird meteorite to cut and is quite fragile. This meteorite is really nice and has all sorts of really cool things in it. I have used a NWA name that has been reserved for me so the met society is not aware of this meteorite yet but I have found somebody who has agreed to classifify it and if all goes according to plan it will appear in the bulletin next year under this NWA number. I am hoping that will happen anyway. I should get some on ebay soon but a 20% discount to any items on this webpage that I just built. This meteorite has stripes like a zebra and you will love it. Here is my webpage. 20% discount http://www.meteoriteshop.com/sales/nwa2226sale.htm Cheers DEAN __ Do you Yahoo!? Read only the mail you want - Yahoo! If my memory is correct, Rob Elliott was the first person to sell them on Ebay and the going price for unclassified common chondrites was well over $1.00/gr. Re: [meteorite-list] meteorite sale
Hi Steve and list, I was just wondering if there is a typo on your sale page? You have a 5 gram fragment of SAU 001 listed for $12 or $2.40 a gram? Last I checked, it sells for 25 cents a gram, some dealers still sell it for $1 gram or at least try to. Just wondering. : ) Thanks, Tom peregrineflier IMCA 6168 http://www.frontiernet.net/~peregrineflier/Peregrineflier.htm - Original Message - From: Steve Arnold, Chicago!!!
