I also thought that was a unique sentence, and I wonder if by "caught" it
meant that he was trying to steal the specimen. And if so why they sent him
home with a 107 kg piece and not to jail?

Yeah, they wouldn't let him leave with the whole mass, but the would let him
whack off a 107 Kg end slice and then leave!!!
