A Meteoroid Hits the Moon
NASA Science News
June 13, 2006
There's a new crater on the Moon. It's about 14 meters
wide, 3 meters deep and precisely one month, eleven days old.
NASA astronomers watched it form: On May 2, 2006, a
Did someone see it glowing all the way to the ground? For sure?
That is normally an ilusion.
What is seen to glow in a meteor, is not the incandescence of the meteoroid,
but the cloud of ionized gases around it, many thousands times larger than
the stone in itself.
The meteorites fall at a
Hi All,
I'm with Marco, Chris and others on this one: that's not an impact
site. If people are looking for something this large, they'll never
find it. I highly doubt the Norwegian bolide was even as large as a
soccer ball (er, football), in which case it would have hit the ground
at terminal
Hi All,
Finally we can close the book on the ridiculous notion that that
photo represented evidence of a meteorite impact. Time to move on
to the much more important piece of data revealed by Bjorn Sorheim --
that at least *three* seismic stations recorded the terminal burst
(or possibly just

the event). Infrasound provides both timing and direction
information; unfortunately all the stations are south or

Dear List Members,
I loaded some excellent specimens this week including the new EL6/7
everybody has been pondering. A deal fell through because of a lack of funds
on a dealer's part on some NWA 869 so I loaded all that I have left,
excellent pieces all the way up to a 95% crusted 2 kg plus

I will let the experts here debate this but, from the very beginning,
I thought this story sounded familiar. In December 1997, the
Internet was rife with rumours of a huge meteorite crashing in
Greenland. As the days and the weeks went on, the size of the
meteorite was considerably downsized
I havent been doing much cutting since I came to New
Zealand (Partially because I had to get all the parts
and put a saw together myself) but here finally is a
nice interesting selection of 50 nice cut meteorites
that I am sure you will like.

I knew it. As a person who lived for some time in British Columbia, these
small rockslides are seen on almost every steep rocky slope.

Hi, Darren
I went to a website that says it will translate
whole websites from Norwegian to English:

Here's the translated result:
Hi, Doug,
I still can't find the actual reference but it was a
paper by Aviva Brecher long ago. Oddly enough,
there's not much materials testing on meteorites
(maybe because it's destructive testing!), but
John S. Lewis reports on ten irons which yielded
crush strengths of 2.7 to 4.2
Hi, Bjorn,
Thanks. There's nothing like local knowledge!
I lamented that the news photo didn't show us the
area below the spot, or some wider view, which
would have made this obvious.
Did I identify you as Swedish in an earlier
post of mine? If so, apologies. A slight pause

List,
I have tried getting more exact information on this fall.
In Norway any more exact info has not come out in the last days as far
as I know. Partly this is because the first sensational rush has died down,
and there is no reason to believe a Hiroshima explosion or anything
aproximating
that

I just checked some weather charts from that day and time.

Hi Bjørn-
The important wind data is for higher altitudes. I don't have a good source
for this information in Norway- maybe the weather service? For the American
events I investigate I use radiosonde data produced or collected by NOAA.
This provides wind speed and direction up to 30km height
