Hi Is the basic data records that are in the MB database available in digital form so a individual could create his/her own database? I would like to be able to query the MB data in certain ways not offered on the MB online site. I also want to be able to total certain data columns. The online MB database doesn't have this feature. If those 1,500 pounds were found in contact with each other in that one hole (as the article seems to be saying) then would you not agree that it was probably a single 1,500+ pound piece that has rotted in situ? Wherther or not the description of the find is accurate isn't solidly established, but if it was found as described-- 1,500 pounds, one hole, close contact with each other, I don't think it unfair to think it was from a 1,500+ pound individual. Re: [meteorite-list] Amusing Chicago Sun-Times Article
Hi Geoff and Listees, I think you have hit the nail on the head in regards to this find which is in pieces. I am sure he wants this to be larger than Steve Arnolds orientated specimen. How can we be sure that what is in the hole he has found isn't other fragments from other finds? I guess if they can put them all together then I'd be satisfied that it WAS one of the largest masses of the Brenham fall. Other wise anyone can accumulate fragments from this fall and claim the largest specimen. I have to go with the largest intact fragment as counting as the largest main mass. Otherwise we might be subject to others gathering fragments and claiming to have the main mass. An example of this is Long Island (at the Field Museum) which is in may fragments and somewhat put together and at one time was a larger specimen. Hope this doesn't get into a main mass discussion :-; --AL Mitterling __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

There is, of course, no object in the solar system at the present time that could do that, but they wanted all the drama they could get, I guess... I am not so sure one could categorically say that NO object exists in the solar system that could do that. A large Kuiper belt object, if deflected , might still hit the Earth just like that. We don't have a good enough map of the Kuiper belt to rule this out. But I nitpick. Sterling, your explanation was great, and I agree it is MOST IMPROBABLE that any solar system object today could do this. Hi Al and all, The fact that it was one of the largest masses of Brenham is irrelevant. It is not now one of the largest masses. Before it all entered the earth's atmosphere all Brenham might all have been one mass - or, in the asteroid belt it might all have been one mass, so, the fact that 1500 LBs might have been one mass in that hole at some time I just don't see how you can get close to comparing that to Steve's find - which IS the largest Brenham mass known. But if the story is accurate and not-- shall we say-- embelleshed by the finder, then 1,500 pounds of fragments in one hole surrounded by 20 feet of rust would still be an important piece of the story of the fall. Another way to look at it is by past finds. How about Huckitta!? THE largest pallasite. Actually, the largest stony/iron I think. The main mass is 1411kg but it was found with another tonne of shale fragments. Does this mean it really weighs ~2.4 tonnes??? [meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rover Update - July 7, 2006
http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html SPIRIT UPDATE: Spirit Continues Work As Martian Days Grow Shorter - sol 889-896, July 07, 2006: Spirit has been busy receiving new flight software upgrades, both directly from Earth via the rover's high-gain antenna and indirectly via relay from NASA's Odyssey spacecraft. Engineers anticipated that all flight software upgrades would be on board the rover by early in the week of July 10, 2006. Spirit also successfully completed a procedure to correct for drift in the inertial measurement unit, resulting in more accurate pointing of the miniature thermal emission spectrometer. Spirit remains healthy and continues to make progress on the rover's winter science campaign of experiments. Spirit's handlers planned to have the rover spend part of the weekend calibrating the brush on the rock abrasion tool, using images from the panoramic camera and hazard avoidance cameras to characterize dirt buildup on the instrument. Solar array input was down to about 290 watt-hours per sol (a hundred watt-hours is the amount of electricity needed to light one 100-watt bulb for one hour). Sol-by-sol summaries: Sol 889 (July 4, 2006): Spirit studied the rock target Halley with the Mössbauer spectrometer. Sol 890: Spirit calibrated the elevation actuator (a motor that controls horizontal tilt) in the miniature thermal emission spectrometer. Sol 891: Spirit made observations with the miniature thermal emission spectrometer. Sol 892: Engineers transmitted an uplink of flight software files via X-band radio to the rover's high-gain antenna. Sol 893: Plans call for Spirit to calibrate and take images of the rock abrasion tool. Sols 894 to 896 (July 9 to 11, 2006): Plans call for Spirit to continue acquiring panoramic camera images for the McMurdo Panorama. Odometry: As of sol 891 (July 6, 2006), Spirit's total odometry remained at 6,876.18 meters (4.27 miles). __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
