[meteorite-list] Walter Zeitschel - bad news
Dear list members, I have to report some bad news concerning Walter Zeitschel. A few days ago he had an accident, felt down and broke his leg, the neck of femur. The surgery went well, additionally he received a hip prosthesis, but it's not sure if he will recover his mobility again, which was limited already before. For those, who don't know him in person: Walter Zeitschel was one of the greatest collector personages of the 20th century, owning once the largest private meteorite collection of the world. - once I had his copy of the Hays-catalogue and it was unbelievable to see, behind which and behind how many locales he marked with a dot, that they are found in his collection. Bernd got his first meteorite from him, me too - and I guess you won't find any pre-internet collector in Europe, who hasn't Zeitschel-specimens in his collection. All of us cherish Walter for his humour and as inexhaustible source of meteorite stories. As he has no internet access at hospital and his wife Niki doesn't know so well to use a computer and really is stricken by other sorrow now, you can't contact Walter by email for the next 2 months. So please send your get-well wishes to Michael Hofmann: [EMAIL PROTECTED] He will print them out and will deliver them to Walter, when he will visit him in hospital these days. And to avoid this post getting a style of an obituary: Walter with his energy feels already - despite the pains - very bored in hospital. Thus send him meteoritical news, scoops, articles via the given address! [meteorite-list] NWA 4679 Molten Chondrule?
I purchased a 4.0g part slice of NWA 4679 from Carsten Giessler a couple of weeks ago and would appreciate any comments on this unusual looking chondrule. The piece I bought is visible at the bottom of this page: http://www.gi-po.de/ebayfolder/shop/carbopre/carbo.htm The feature I'm referring to is at the top left corner of the piece in Carsten's image. I've tried to get a close up, apologies for the quality (I held a 20x loope over my camera lens!): http://www.zen98648.zen.co.uk/temp/nwa4679_closeup_small.jpg The larger chondrule is about 2mm diameter. The smaller one has a pale (bleached?) outer layer and is darker inside. The small chondrule has an appearence suggesting is has melted and flowed around the outside of the larger chondrule. The darker central region is distorted into a tear-drop shape. I've seem plenty of distorted and misshaped chondrules before, but nothing quite like this. My knowledge and experience is very limited in comparison to many on this list, is there an explanation for the formation of a structure like this? Any comments would be welcome. The darker central region is distorted into a tear-drop shape. Hello Matt, Carsten, and List, No direct answer but, ... Here is what I wrote to Carsten and to Christian after I had thoroughly looked at my 8-gram part slice and at all the other slices that Carsten offered in his presale campaign: As such macrochondrules have not been observed in CK chondrites, I wonder where this huge 12-mm BO chondrule comes from. Maybe from the meteorite that collided with the CK parent body of NWA 4679? If so, was it an H, an L, or an LL chondrite? The sheer size of this macrochondrule speaks in favor of an L chondrite. Looking at slice #10 and at slice #11, I noticed the chondrules seem to have a preferred orientation as if matrix and chondrule material had been solidified when still in a half-molten state. If that is true the dark, quasi chondrule-free areas that Carsten describes as clasts might be material that was molten on impact (or some other scenario) and we might be looking at an impact-melted CK4 (CK3.8 - according to M. Denise) if such a thing exists. Furthermore I noticed that these chondrule-free clasts have different hues. Within that area in slice #6 - let me just call it river of melt for the moment - you can see such color shades on the left in Carsten's picture #6, no.2: a triangular, somewhat darker clast (in the picture that clast looks like the contraction cracks in the fresh fusion crust of a meteorite) seems to be wedged into this river of melt. As for your droplet chondrule, maybe it is an intermediary type: half chondrule, half CAI. The late R. Hutchison mentions chondrules that are texturally and mineralogically intermediate between ferromagnesian chondrules and CAIs. Such chondrules have igneous textures and may be of droplet or clast type. Well, igneous again points toward something that solidified from a melt. I'm really looking forward to hearing more about NWA 4679 from professional meteoriticists! [meteorite-list] Didim's meteorite zooms towards university
Didim's meteorite zooms towards university http://www.voicesnewspaper.com/modules.php?name=Newsfile=articlesid=558 THE location of the meteor which landed in Didim, causing worldwide focus, has finally reached its resting place a university laboratory. Scientists at Çanakkale University have taken the meteor away to be studied. But is has also thrown light on the universitys three-year investigation into meteors and their craters around the country. According to Canakkales Prof Dr Mehmet Ozel, the university is presently conducting a wide-ranging survey of meteors which have landed in Turkey of which there are believed to be about 13. As head of an eight-man team, the professor said they had been able to locate five craters and meteors but the others were still being sought. He said the Didim meteor had helped to highlight his teams work and would hopefully attract more interest from people who may have witnessed meteors or had retrieved them innocently without knowing their full scientific merit. However, he did indicate that retrieving the Didim meteor had not been to easy. The meteor was claimed by Abdullah Arýtürk when it rocketed to earth and landed at the Green Park complex, in Yeþilkent, last Thursday, after scores of people across the Bodrum Peninsula reported to police a ball of fire across the sky. Prof Ozel said: We wanted that stone and we retrieved it from him with much difficulty. Didim's meteorite zooms towards university Collectors from as far as America have offered astronomical prices to get their hands on the famous meteor of Didim Arýtürk, not eager to part from his meteor of which he thinks to be a present from God, solved the problem by splitting it into two. American collector Robert Wesel, who read the news in Voices has offered Arýtürk 1,800 dollars. Another American collector Stephan Grossman offered 500 dollars to buy the meteor. Hello Thomas, Thanks for sharing the very nice pictures. Here in Cacém, some 19 kms NW of Lisbon, we had a nice view of the eclipse, although there were some thin, high cirrus passing by, now and then. Local TV stations also showed this eclipse. I recall seeing one eclipse from northern Natal, Zululand, South Africa, that was so dark that the Moon almost became invisible - the view was affected by Mount Pinatubo's ash particles into our atmosphere - also, there were local veld fires. I think it was December 1992. Re: [meteorite-list] Last on Adamana for a while (I hope)
Hi Dave and Jason, I appreciate the discussion from you both, all the food for thought... Each time I saw your posts, I didn't find any of you referencing the obvious fact of the possible effect on travel distance of the superb orientation of the Adamana specimen with respect to the physics. Sorry if I missed it! I wish I had time to cook up a quantitative story, but the Adamana orientation would contribute to a 75% faster (guess*) velocity over a longer path length as the tumbling stones reached free fall I'm guessing. I am somewhat comparing apples to oranges with free fall velocities and incident velocities, but it illustrates the considerations. I'm not expressing any opinion over this case, but just pointing out that there is a theoretical ways to determine whether the distance traveled is ridiculous or whether intuition can be ridiculous. Note that friction has a direct proportion to velocity, and you can play with the projectile formula on a hand calculator to get a feel for the angles necessary and differences in distance traveled: distance = sin(2*ranging angle)(1-(4/3)*(vi/vt)*sin(ranging angle) which will give you the a feel for the distance traveled by a launched projectile subjected constant atmosphere, where vi is the initial velocity and vt is the terminal velocity - this is the easiest way I think to get some good intuition. So if you can settle on the azimuth of Adamana generally being in line with Holbrook, you might have another argument to cover relating to how quickly the Adamana changed from straight line flight to parabolic and then nosed down into free fall. I am guessing that the right conditions are theoretically there to keep the possibility open from a strewn field perspective given the nosecone sculpted orientation of the piece and its generally higher momentum. This would be a very interesting thing to do given all the data on Holbrook out there and if any larger oriented specimens were collected in known points. One of my own Holbrooks is loaded with chondrules on the surface and looks old and worn and another tiny one is complete and asphalt black, but that's all I can say other than having the fun with mechanics and the effect of friction on projectile angles... I don't see the benefit searching the 'Adamana' locality on the supposition it is another Holbrook piece unless you expect to find another equally oriented and sized stone there (though the line that connects Adamana to Aztec is another story)...but if you believe they are not the same fall, and have reliable coordinates, happy hunting! Best wishes and Health, Doug *from my post on this day in history of 2004: http://www.mail-archive.com/meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com/msg20269.html Also for fun, an oriented bowling ball that fractures in exactly two hemispherical pieces traveling terminally at 150 mph will leave the two fragments at a terminal rate of ... 106 mph a piece. That's probably why explosions seem to brighten fireballs. Suddenly the greater surface area for the same total mass steps up the overall frictional energy released and the meteors slow down from an instantly greater potential. . - Original Message - From: DNAndrews [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Meteorite-list meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2007 11:09 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Last on Adamana for a while (I hope) Hi again, Jason, I've been researching the Holbrook field and it's history for about 9 years now. Talking to old timers and listening to their stories passed down from their ancestors, etc. I've found 100's of the stones and the people I've hunted with, at least a hundred more. I think I/we have a pretty good idea now as to the orientation of the elipse and the size of the known field. From all of this, I can pretty much now tell what direction the bolide came from and which way it was headed. I can tell you now, from personal experience, it's now 3-1/2 x 1-1/2 miles. You can quote Norton, Kring, Farrington, Google all you want, but that's the sizenow. It's not growing from erosion. Now that's ridiculous (as you keep saying). Those stones didn't blow in the wind on top and sides of those dunes, nor did they go down some torential wash and end up there either. I'm sure the modern day King of Holbrook, Steve Schoner, will agree with me on this as will a few others. In fact, it was years I ago I got the approx. dimensions from him off this very list. The only reason I mentioned large chondrules in some of the original finds, is to point out the Holbrook meteorite was not homogenous in structure. There is even a picture I have of an original Foote stone that has an 11mm hole where a chondrule fell out of it's crust. However, of all my finds, I only see a size of 1mm or maybe a very few 2mm (as the largest) chondrules in the matrix. I found one stone of ~140 gms in weight, that was in fragments. It's non-crusted, exposed surfaces were

[meteorite-list] Need Help Obtaining North Carolina Meteorites
Hi List, I am looking to hopefully obtain some specimens of North Carolina meteorites that I can display while I am out selling meteorite and tektite specimens to raise funds for my Astronomy club's Observatory Building fund. I had some GREAT help from list members obtaining the pieces I was selling. I thank you for that!!! But the North Carolina pieces I want to get will not be for sale, they will be just for display purposes. I want to display some interesting items so as to get folks more interested in what I am doing. That way, I am doing than simply selling things. The educational value is great, and it may get some more folks interested in collecting. The fact the specimens are from their home state will usually get their attention. I was out at Tri Star (an annual, local astronomy event) this past weekend and displayed/sold a nice amount of meteorites and tektites. I gave a local school system's Science teacher who was in attendance a baggie with about 75 grams of small unclassified NWA's for his classroom. He was most appreciative. Anyway - back to the North Carolina pieces. Part slices are fine. Size does not have to be big, perhaps a half gram or so, depending on price. A good surface to weight ratio is a plus. I know there are several North Carolina falls and finds, and I have been looking around online a lot, but so far I have only seen Monroe available. If you have something to offer, please contact me off list. I don't have lots of extra cash to spend, so if possible, I need your best price. Many thanks for your time! [meteorite-list] Dawn Journal - February 19, 2007
http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/journal_2_07.asp Dawn Journal Dr. Marc D. Rayman February 19, 2007 Dear DawNRLs, The Dawn spacecraft has just completed the final and most challenging of the environmental tests needed to prepare for its launch and travels through space. During the past month, it has endured the extreme heat and cold of spaceflight in a large vacuum chamber at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, DC. In the last few months of 2006, the spacecraft underwent a broad range of tests at Orbital Sciences Corporation in Dulles, Virginia. It passed all of them, and for graduation the spacecraft, along with its retinue of mechanical and electrical test and support equipment, was sent on a pleasingly uneventful drive to NRL during the first weekend in January. Once it arrived, preparations began immediately for the next set of tests in NRL's thermal vacuum chamber. After the spacecraft and special monitoring equipment were installed in the chamber, plates whose temperature could be individually controlled were positioned around the spacecraft to ensure the desired thermal test conditions could be achieved. Pumps began removing air early in the evening of January 23, and by the next morning, the interior of the chamber was more than 100 million times below normal atmospheric pressure. Dawn experienced the same vacuum condition last summer, but that was to drive off contaminants. This time, the goal was to operate the spacecraft in ways similar to what it will face during its mission. By subjecting it to heat and cold, and testing the performance of its subsystems under both extremes, the engineering team could verify that the critically important thermal control subsystem will be able to keep temperatures within desired limits throughout the full range of conditions Dawn will encounter in space. The enormous solar arrays had been removed at Orbital and will not be reconnected to the spacecraft until April. The vacuum chamber at NRL is not large enough to accommodate the arrays when they are open, extending 19.7 meters (almost 65 feet) tip-to-tip. If they had been in their stowed, or folded, position for these tests, as they will be when on the rocket, they would have covered parts of the structure that are supposed to be exposed in space. That would have retained heat inside the probe and prevented these tests from accurately duplicating the temperatures it will experience in space. After the chamber pressure was reduced, the temperature was raised gradually to 45°C (113°F) and held there for almost a week while engineering and science subsystems were put through their paces. Following that, quite unaware of the hibernal, but comparatively balmy, conditions outside NRL, the spacecraft was brought to -25°C (-13°F) for several more days of tests. Although it is designed to operate under these conditions, few of the Dawn team members are well suited either to working in the absence of air or at such temperatures. Therefore, on February 8, when the time came to make planned changes in the test configuration, the chamber was brought back to normal atmospheric pressure and temperature so people could enter. Tests resumed the next day under vacuum. Among other activities in this second phase, some mission scenario tests were conducted. Unlike the many tests focused on individual subsystems, these were designed to make the subsystems work together as they must when Dawn is operating in orbit around distant Vesta, the first of its mysterious and enticing destinations. In fact, the mission scenario tests provide an opportunity to assess even more than the collective performance of the subsystems; the spacecraft and some of the systems in mission control operate together in much the same way they will during the mission. On February 14, Dawn's ion propulsion system was powered on for its long-awaited hot fire test. (Your correspondent -- ever the romantic -- conducted what proved to be an unsuccessful search for a Valentine's Day card that appropriately expressed the sentiments associated with such an experience.) The ion propulsion system cannot operate in normal atmospheric pressure, so although its individual components had been tested quite extensively, this was the only opportunity to test them all together. The digital control interface units, power processor units, xenon feed system, and thrusters all performed beautifully. The extremely gentle thrust, as described in the last log, caused no more movement of the spacecraft than if a piece of paper had been lain on it, but the team certainly felt a powerful boost to see the bluish glow of the thruster and gain one more indication that Dawn is getting close to flight. The spacecraft has 3 thrusters, with only 1 to be operated at a time in the mission. In this test, one of them could not be fired because it was blocked by hardware supporting the spacecraft. That thruster still had a nearly full test. It ionized xenon
[meteorite-list] Rosetta Delivers Phobos Transit Animation and 'Sees' Mars in Stereo
http://www.esa.int/esaCP/SEM9R6N0LYE_index_0.html Rosetta delivers Phobos transit animation and 'sees' Mars in stereo European Space Agency 27 February 2007 During Rosetta's recent Mars swingby, the OSIRIS cameras captured a series of images of Mars and of Phobos transiting Mars' disk. The OSIRIS team have produced a cool animated sequence and a 3D view of the Red Planet. The animated sequences (one faster, one slower) show the shadow of Phobos transiting Mars' disk on 24 February; the images were captured around 22:08 CET [2108 UTC], a few hours prior to Rosetta's successful Mars swingby on 25 February. The movies were produced by combining a series of separate images taken by the Optical, Spectroscopic and Infrared Remote Imaging System (OSIRIS) on board Rosetta. The background of Mars changes slightly from image to image since the individual images were acquired using different colour filters. Phobos appears dark because it reflects less sunlight than Mars. Phobos is the inner moon of Mars; Phobos orbits closer to a major planet compared to any other moon in our solar system (less than 6000 km above the surface of Mars), and it is also one of the smallest known moons in the solar system. Mars in 3D Although Rosetta's direction relative to Mars was relatively constant during the approach phase, the surface view of Mars changed due to the rotation of the planet. Thus, it was possible to produce a stereoscopic image, or anaglyph, by processing and combining images acquired by OSIRIS at different times. The image was produced by combining several views of Mars taken from slightly different angles. In this case, the anaglyph was generated using images acquired 6 minutes apart. To see the 3D effect, use a pair of left-eye red, right-eye blue colour glasses. The 3D image clearly shows the spherical shape of Mars. However, due to the angle between the different views, Martian topography is not visible stereoscopically. At closest approach at 03:15 CET on 25 February, Rosetta passed over the planet's surface at a relative speed of 36 191 km/hr. During the swingby, the gravitational energy of Mars helped Rosetta change direction, while the spacecraft was decelerated with respect to the Sun by an estimated 7887 km/hour. The spacecraft is now on the correct track towards Earth -- its next destination planet whose gravitational energy Rosetta will exploit in November this year to gain acceleration and continue on its trek. Described by several pilots as a ball of fire, orange in color and scattered, the phenomenon was said to have appeared over the Indian state of Gujarat and has left aircraft officials perplexed at its possible cause, the Sunday Express said. http://www.voicesnewspaper.com/modules.php?name=Newsfile=articlesid=558 Didim's meteorite zooms towards university Voices Newspaper (Turkey) March 4, 2007 THE location of the meteor which landed in Didim, causing worldwide focus, has finally reached its resting place - a university laboratory. Scientists at Canakkale University have taken the meteor away to be studied. But is has also thrown light on the university's three-year investigation into meteors and their craters around the country. According to Canakkale's Prof Dr Mehmet Ozel, the university is presently conducting a wide-ranging survey of meteors which have landed in Turkey - of which there are believed to be about 13. As head of an eight-man team, the professor said they had been able to locate five craters and meteors but the others were still being sought. He said the Didim meteor had helped to highlight his team's work and would hopefully attract more interest from people who may have witnessed meteors or had retrieved them innocently without knowing their full scientific merit. However, he did indicate that retrieving the Didim meteor had not been to easy. The meteor was claimed by Abdullah Arturk when it rocketed to earth and landed at the Green Park complex, in Yesilkent, last Thursday, after scores of people across the Bodrum Peninsula reported to police a ball of fire across the sky. Prof Ozel said: We wanted that stone and we retrieved it from him with much difficulty. Collectors from as far as America have offered astronomical prices to get their hands on the famous meteor of Didim Arturk, not eager to part from his meteor of which he thinks to be a present from God, solved the problem by splitting it into two. American collector Robert Wesel, who read the news in Voices has offered Arturk 1,800 dollars. He was an enthusiastic meteorite collector with some personal problems at the time and the meteorites seemed to help him cope with his problems. His mistake evidently was that he declared himself 'the proudest member of the IMCA', and I believe he really was proud to be associated with the organization, but some people jumped on this and rode it into the ground. I don't think it is ever honorable to have fun at the expense of others. We can laugh at ourselves and good-naturedly poke fun at our friends when they are agreeable to it, but I saw nothing of this with that particular character. Another list member, whom I respect as I do Michael, tried some offbeat humor a couple of years ago which didn't go over well with some. He saw his mistake, apologized and withdrew it, and that was the end of it. He continues to make great contributions to the list. I am not referring to our members who flare up or argue occasionally, and who agree to disagree. They are basically good people who most of us have respect for and who have made many contributions to our hobby, but who argue, sometimes very heatedly, to make some valid points. The list is in the best shape it's been in for some time, so let's try to keep uplifting our members as we are presently doing with those who are sick and hurting, and also endeavor to not be the cause of pain or mental anguish for any member. I know the emails I have gotten OFF LIST run at least 20 to one stating they ENJOY the humor of Proud Tom. Furthermore, since he tends to set up a web page for people to visit, I suggest those NOT enamored of his brand of humor simply not click to the URL. In any event, it would seem that if numerous people state they would enjoy seeing another round of Proud Tom he will be setting up a web page. If no one expresses interest, sounds like he won't. Let me be the first to STRONGLY ENCOURAGE THE COURAGEOUS METEORITE CRUSADER in putting up a web page for all to enjoy state that those not interested are encouraged not to visit it. How about others??? RSVP Best wishes, Michael - I am sorry Michael, but I'll have to disagree with you. Proud Tom is sleazy, insulting, and no longer funny. I don't believe any member of the Meteorite will feel any pride at being represented, or even associated to such a character, even fictional. I would urge you to bury Proud Tom permanently. And I can't possibly be the only one to feel insulted by that association. Anne M. Black www.IMPACTIKA.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] President, I.M.C.A. [meteorite-list] heat source
Greetings list I've been re-reading Dodd on heat sources in meteorites, and basicly, at the time of writting, Alum-26 was the current answer. But I really have a problem with a heat source that can melt ice, but not be abundant enough to vaporize it like what would be needed to cause diffrenciation in small bodies. Is there a later thought, or have they just modified the quantities needed and assumed present to fill the bill until newer data is presented? Re: [meteorite-list] Not Proud of Tom
While I have to admit (Somewhat embarrasingly) that I did read and had a laugh out of the past website and that it was mildly amusing in an offensive sort of way, I have to agree with anne. I didnt feel offended but I could easily see that the site was offensive to 3 or 4 of the target people and crossed the line between good natured humour among friends and was derogatory rather than funny. With several of the target people the humour was a mild form of the N word jokes and not harmless poking fun - and there was no apology from proud tom who didnt see any harm when these target people publicly complained about being offended. The internet is open to the world including non meteorite people who dont know personally the target people. Not exactly the way you would want your industry portrayed in public outside your own industry. I am with ann on this one. I say let Proud tom rest (Or maybe I should say die) in peace. Re: [meteorite-list] Not Proud of Tom
Good Evening All, I totally agree with Anne abd Dean! I was kidding when I said I enjoyed it in my reply post from Michael. But then I did get a reply from proud Tom to my personal email account! ;-) Let him rest or not use people as targets. I totally agree that when one 'googles' any info about a meteorite person's name, it looks bad when it comes up as a person of bad character. With best regards, Moni PS. I was also mentioned in one of the episodes and thought it to be funny, but never less some did offend others and that is what should be considered.
