[meteorite-list] More on Ensisheim 2007
Hi Graham, Matthias, list, Sorry to reply so late. I was out of mail for almost 3 weeks. Seems that the 2 web sites mentioned on the circular (also mentioned heredown in your mail copies) do not work efficiently, or, with luck, can be opened only sporadically. I tried right now both sites, without success... Very sorry for that and I strongly hope these problems being solved in the very near future. Those interested in having the latest show news or details are free to contact me any time and I'll send the circular as attachment (Graham, I'm sending you all info off list right now) Call to dealers and Friday dinner-party potential participants: Please let me know or confirm your wish to attend either event, if not yet done. Thanks much and best wishes, Zelimir A 23:47 21/04/2007 +0200, Matthias Bärmann a écrit : Hi Graham, have a look here: http://www.ville-ensisheim.fr/index2_d.htm Best, Matthias - Original Message - From: ensoramanda [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Saturday, April 21, 2007 11:23 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Ensisheim 2007 info Hi, Just investigating going to Ensisheim this year and wondered if anyone had any extra tips, recommendations, timetables of events, must sees etc that would help a first timer...in addition to the info below. Graham Ensor, nr Barwell UK [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear List, The circular describing the 8th international meteorite show « Ensisheim 2007 » is ready. You can find it at the following web site (from next Monday April 16 on): http://meteorite.ensisheim.free I can also provide the circular (in English or French) by mail, on request. The main characteristics/changes/warnings? of the 2007 editions are (among) the following: Dates: June 16 and 17, 2007 (week-end preceding the St Marie mineral show). Friday 15 is the ?dealers day?. 2007 theme: Meteorites: weird shapes, internal beauties. Illustrated by a dual lecture on Saturday by Z. Gabelica (?odd morphologies??) R. Warin (?Thin sections: open windows to cosmology?) as well as by the usual permanent thematic exhibit: ?meteorite samples involving unusual external shapes and strange sections? from private collections?? (btw: we still need samples for display. Please contact me off list). Alain Carion will exhibit in a side-window of the museum, in preview, a fragment of the new French meteorite ?Saint-Ouen-en-Champagne?. This is our ?wild card?? On Sunday, Nico Mettler (Winterthur, CH) will describe his recent 1000+ km expedition through the Great Sand Sea desert (Lybia-Egypt) in search for Lybian Desert Glass (LDG) samples, through a lecture entitled ?LDG: a quest for an enigma?. The Regency walls will be decorated by original drawings of our young artists, featuring ?Meteorite hunting in hot deserts? (a contest). Friday PARTY: As in 2006 a dinner-party (absolutely unavoidable!) is again scheduled on Friday June 15 (from 19:00) at ?La Couronne? hotel, in their outside resort (as in 2006, we have asked the weather to co-operate...). Party can end any time. Two special meals are proposed, 25 euro, everything included, except beverage (hey, if beverage were included, bankrupt of ?La Couronne? guaranteed!). Everybody (organizers, dealers, close friends, ?loose? friends, relatives, related?) attending (or not) the enthroning ceremonies and the ?friendly drink? that follows (Friday late afternoon, about 18:00), is welcome! Fun guaranteed! (Ask the 70+ last year participants!). And ask for a wake-up call if you don?t want to miss the start of the ?meteorite hot rush? the next morning? Other meals: Saturday and Sunday lunches (served at ?La Couronne?) and the Saturday dinner (traditional ?roasted wild boar? served on the main ?dancing? square) will now be prepared by the team of cooks from ?La Couronne?. Friendly prices (17.5 euro for a complete menu) were negotiated. If you want the special vintage ?Ensisheim-Meteorite 1492? Pinot Gris to accompany your meals, it can be permanently available at its tag price. The Guardians Confraternity is still permanently providing all other traditional snacks, including the very popular ?tarte flambée? (alsacian pie), all served outside, on the main square (or inside the sun-protected tent, - rain is neither invited nor envisaged). All the other activities on the main square (beer, wine sale, beer, tee shirts, beer?) are maintained. Accomodation: Besides the 3 traditional hotels (Couronne, Niemerich, Cheval Blanc), the brand new hotel ?Le Domaine du Moulin? is now open. It has the ?La Couronne? standard (4 stars) and is as close to the Regency (200 m ? or more, depending on how thirsty you were during the parties?). I haven?t visited it yet but heard that a double room, breakfast included, costs around 70-75 euro, a reasonable price even with the stronger euro). 5 new ?brothers?. This year, Anne Black (US),
[meteorite-list] Wild boar at Ensisheim 2007 info
Hi Dean, list Yes, having a car is a good tip to attend both Ensisehim and Ste Marie (80 km distant from Ensisheim). Note here that Ensisehim ends Sunday night (June 17) and Ste Marie starts very early next week (officially on Wednesday, non-officially, before). Camper is the real tip, especially if you want to go to Ste Marie the following week, where hotels are basically fully booked at that period of the year, unless you move at least 20-30 km further in the country. Concerning hotels in Enssiehim, while La Couronne is now fully booked, the brand new one (Domaine du Moulin, see circular) located right next to the square, still has free rooms. It is a 4 star hotel, at least equivalent to La Couronne, at least in price: Around 72 euro a single room breakfast included, 78 for double bed. Note that the nearby Niemerich (5 km distant) offers rooms for 46 euro/2 persons. Regarding socalizing in Ensisheim ( = having a lot of fun all together), the dinner-party is maintained at La Couronne on Friday night (June 15). Reservation highly recommended (we are right now more than 70). Another dinner is planned, as in the past, on the main square, in front of the Regency Palace, on Saturday night (followed by music, dancing and perhaps some beer or wine for those who really hate water...). We had struggled hard to maintain the wild boar. However, this time, it will be prepared by the (excellent) cook of La Couronne and served in another style. And Dean, yes, definitely, I'll take care to save the tongue for your best appreciation. Especially if you can show up with your wife Dean, if you have in your carry-ons (hm!) the 900+ kg morroccan stuff, I still have some table for you... Shipping stuff from Enssiheim: yest, the best tip so far is Dean's proposal. But if you wish to ship some parcels to Ensisehim befroe the show, contact me for arrangements. If not too heavy (as it happened last year with ouyr Russian freinds - oh, my poor back!), you can ship to me. But write first. I am hoping (Unless the moroccans give me to many hassles as I do have 900 kilos of meteorites in morocco right now that I am piking up in st marie) that I wont be selling and will just be socializing and enjoying the shows. If you go you want to go to St marie the next weekend and if you havent been in that area before there are a lot of nice small old style towns that is worth visiting and off the main tourists areas that you can go see between the two shows. A car is a must (Probably cheaper to rent in amsterdam or paris than in germany or switzerland) and hotel rooms are hard to get (And probably overpriced). A few people bring a camper van to ensisheim but from either st marie or ensisheim 30 euro a night hotels are probably easily available within a 20 minute drive. This might screw up your drinking though - and the ensisheim show organizers puts of a really nice party during the show. The specially made wine is great and keeps you coming back for more but the meteor beer sucks so stay away from the meteor tent. [meteorite-list] Greensburg Fundraiser, Where the Money Is Going, Raffle Details
The following I am posting for Steve Brenham Arnold, who is still in Greenburg. Hey List, Another night of rocking out at midnight at the top of the stereo during Marshall Law in Greensburg. Just trying to make the best of a not-so-good deal. I am excited that we are getting a great fundraiser going for my neighbors. I lost a house, but all my neighbors lost both their houses AND their homes, and in many cases they lost much more. Several of us have been talking about how we can best impact the City of Greensburg the best way possible with a fund raiser. After talking with a lot of locals, the overwhelming consensus is that people in Haviland say that the Haviland State Bank's Relief Fund is the place to put it. They are in touch with the people of the area who really need the funds. Of course FEMA, the Red Cross and the United Way are here, but due to some of their bureaucracies, not all of the money donated to them makes it to Ground Zero. The people at Haviland State Bank have assured us that 100% of the funds raised will go to people that need the money, sometimes people that fall though the cracks that the bigger charities seem to miss. So with our whole hearted conviction, we feel that you can rest assured that you participation in the meteorite community fundraiser(s) will make the biggest impact possible. While we will get the money to the fund ASAP, we will attempt to make a formal presentation of the total amount raised to the bank in a formal Big Check on Stage at the 2007 Meteorite Festival in July. Of course we are not doing this to make the meteorite community look good, we are doing it to help people. But we want the neighborhood to know that they have friends out in the world that care about them. We have some great people working on this project, and of course some people that participate are going to walk away with some GREAT meteorite specimens. Kiowa County is one of the few places on this planet that cares about meteorites. And what has happened over the years here has impacted in many way ALL of our lives. Now is the time we can give back to a community that has given so much to us. What happens in the next few days and next few weeks will determine if people's lives come out of this with a positive result or a negative result. We can, and we will make a difference. YOU can make a difference. We look forward to giving you updates as this rolls along. You guys are the best. You all deserve a Harvey for this one! Steve Arnold 308 S. Maple Greensburg, Kansas 67054 (end) I would also like to add that those that have donated funds already will receive raffle tickets in value of their donation. Also, Haviland has updated it's 2007 Meteorite Festival page a little.(http://www.havilandkansas.com/id4.html) You will be able to find more information on the Festival as we get closer to it. And Dean, yes, definitely, I'll take care to save the tongue for your best appreciation. Especially if you can show up with your wife SWEET. I am looking forward to ensisheim. Should be a great time. Unfortunately my pregnant wife (Who cant travel for 8 months anyway as she dont even have a philippine passport right now as she had to give her philippine passport to the New Zealand government as part of her application to get a New Zealand passport which takes 8 months) wont be coming. I will however be bringing my 14 month old baby with me, and my parents from Canada will also be there as we have a 3 week vacation planned and they want to see my baby (My father has never seen my baby). We have a car rented for 3 weeks and after St Marie will go visit some friends in spain. I dont plan to bring anything for sale. Work interferes with a nice vacation and I have enough stuff to do as it is to keep me busy. The new hotel in ensisheims website is: http://www.hotel-domainedumoulin-alsace.com/ They have rooms in the 60 to 90 euro range and a swimming pool. I booked a room last weekend so there was rooms available recently. Shipping in that area is a royal pain but I have a shipping company in hamburg that can seafreight stuff from hamburg for next to nothing but shipping from St Marie to Hamburg is about 40 to 50 euro cents a kilo. It took them about 50 days last year to get a bunch of packages to New Zealand and they seem pretty good (They also do air shipments from munich). Re: [meteorite-list] Where have all the meteorites gone?
--- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: There used to be a good selection of pallasites and decent-sized irons rolling through ebay but it seemed to dry up a few months ago. It's downright pathetic lately. What's going on? I know that many people think that dealers have been making it up for the last 3 years but meteorites are running out. In any other industry, stamp collecting, gemstones ect, people look to dealers for a guage of how the market goes and for information. But meteorite people all figure dealers are lying in an effort to drive prices up. Bizzaar. A couple weeks ago somebody even commented that NWA869 was really common. It hasnt been common in 2 years. I remember about 3 years ago in Tucson somebody had a 4 foot pile of the ugliest NWA869 that I had ever seen. I commented at the time that it looks like somebody went over the strewnfield with magnetic equipment and dug the highly weathered ones out of the ground and that this probably means that the strewnfield has been hunted out. It appears that I was right has no large piles have come out since. The next year in quartzite some dealers who werent with it were dumping quantities of small NWA869s at 2 to 3 cents a gram and people were still saying that prices will keep going down forever. Smart money was buying. You never get offered container loads of chinese tektites or Nantens like you were regularly being offered 4 years ago. Gibeon seems done. NWAs are much harder to buy nowadays and the amount of rare classification stuff is few and far between nowadays. About two years ago two large strewnfields (Several tons or more each) of really low grade stuff was found. This all flooded the market all at once and this (along with the rejects of other strewnfields) started getting dumped on ebay my many dealers (Including myself) for under 5 cents a gram. Many people believed that this drop in price was evidence that prices were still falling and will do so forever. Knowledgable investigation revealed that the quality had gone down. I know that 5 yaers ago I could get 500 kilos of nice meteorites in in 3 weeks flat. Now it takes me 6 months to buy that amount. I will let you in on another secret. Meteorite hunters still go to Oman. They dont make a big specticle of it anymore so somebody who dont like competation can pay off the police to set them up and have them arrested but they still go. But they rarely go because they dont find meetorites. The biggest attraction is the lunar strewnfields. Two years ago the russians told me that they still find meteorites but only small ones. So where will future meteorites come from? The atacama is volcanic and the desert is not old. It will never bring out huge amounts of meteorites. There is lots of areas in the middle east becides Oman. But much is militarized or full of landmines. And its not as virgin picking as you might think. Its been searched and I know of a few nomads from morocco (Most of whom are unemployed since eastern morocco has something like a 80% unemployment rate) who uses their religious requirement to go to mecca (Moslems who can afford it are supposed to go to mecca once in their lives) to get on a camel and go on the 11 month trek to mecca from morocco in the hopes of making the trip profitable searching for meteorites. So the arab desert is not entirely virgin to meteorite hunters. More should be there though but I doubt enough to duplicate the NWA rush. Australia is the obvious place and surely there are lots. But two provinces (Including northern territory) makes it illegal to even search for meteorites. National laws make sure than most australian meteorites continue to rust away as the government dont actively saerch for meteorites. The last couple years meteorites have been used more often in jewelry. Should a company like tiffanys decide to market meteorite jewelry the era of cheap meteorites will be over in a matter of months. They likely wouldent though as they couldent get enough supply to make it worth their while - even if they bought every meteorite in the world.. Anyway, thats my market analysis and the answer to the question. I am sure some people will think I am just trying to sell stuff. Re: [meteorite-list] Where have all the meteorites gone?
Well, Dean, perhaps one should express it less pessimistic and alleviate apprehensions : The market will normalize again. The segment of the classical finds and falls, never wasn't affected by the desert-price-crash to that extend, only some mass locales, which appeared in large quantities - but that's also normal, that old locales disappear, new are coming up. Regarding the desert finds, you're certainly right, though meteorites shouldn't be regarded solely as ventures. (To own a valuable specimen and to transmute it into cash, is quite another cup of tea.) But what we, at least I believe, could meanwhile recommend with a clear conscience is, that the collector shouldn't wait any longer, whether the desert finds will get even more cheap than nowadays. I reckon that of course the rare types will raise in price, with one type you already observed it during the last months and last year. With ordinary weathered chondrites, which are by far the bulk of all finds (although they weren't visible on web in the right ratios to the rare types during the last years) the development will be slower, but on the long run, when the overhang will be mined down, also they will get more expensive. (Good crusted or oriented are already much higher paid than the years before). So if one e.g. plans a project to build up a complete systematical collection by type, he should think about to start to realize it within the next very few years. Re: [meteorite-list] Where have all the meteorites gone?
Hi Dean/list, Interesting post. This might sound like a naive question - humour me, I'm new to this - but can anyone give even an approximate answer to these questions? 1 - estimated TKW of /all/ meteorites known to have fallen, to date ...and, I guess, much more difficult: 2 - estimated TKW (rather, I suppose, total available weight) of material 'out there', either waiting to be found in known strewn fields or on the open market? (Assuming no new finds/falls.) I note from your eBay biog (without prejudice or comment - I've purchased specimens from you myself) that you've shipped several tons of NWA in the last few years. How long do people think this level of supply (from yourself and other dealers) can continue? [meteorite-list] New Jersey 'Meteorite' Might Be Space Junk
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/nation/4797076.html `Meteorite' turns out to be space junk By JANET FRANKSTON LORIN Associated Press NEWARK, N.J. - A mysterious metallic object that crashed through the roof of a New Jersey home earlier this year was not a meteorite after all, but probably a piece of space junk, scientists said Friday. The silvery object was made of a stainless-steel alloy that does not occur in nature and is most likely orbital debris - part of a satellite, rocket or some other spacecraft, said Rutgers University geologist Jeremy Delaney. There's huge amounts of material that have been left by the various space programs of the world, he said. Srinivasan Nageswaran, whose family discovered the object after it crashed through the roof and dented the tile bathroom floor at his home in Freehold Township in January, was disappointed by the news. That's the nature of science, said the 46-year-old information technology consultant If the conclusion from the test says it's not a meteorite, then it's not a meteorite. We have to move forward. The object is slightly bigger than a golf ball and about as heavy as a can of soup. Delaney examined it at the police station and initially pronounced it an iron meteorite based on its shape and density. So did other Rutgers geologists and an independent metals expert. But in April, it was taken to the American Museum of Natural History in New York, where a new variable-pressure scanning electron microscope was used to establish its composition. I was wrong, Delaney said. Sneaky little devil. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Still cool. I'd take it. Of course, you could argue that, since it fell through the atmosphere to the ground, presumedly heating enough to cause a meteor (though not reported, as far as I know) it should be called a meteorite-- an artificial one, anyway. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Grok Spock?
http://planetquest.jpl.nasa.gov/news/planetVulcan.cfm Mission could seek out Spock's home planet May 10, 2007 (PLANETQUEST) -- Science fiction may soon become science fact. Astronomers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory have recently concluded that the upcoming planet-finding mission, SIM PlanetQuest, would be able to detect an Earth-like planet around the star 40 Eridani, a planet familiar to Star Trek fans as Vulcan. 40 Eridani, a triple-star system 16 light-years from Earth, includes a red-orange K dwarf star slightly smaller and cooler than our sun. Vulcan is thought to orbit that dwarf star, called 40 Eridani A. When pondering the idea that SIM might be able to detect Vulcan, astronomer Dr. Angelle Tanner at Caltech had two questions: Can a planet form around 40 Eridani A? Can SIM detect such a planet? She consulted a planetary theorist, Dr. Sean Raymond of the University of Colorado, Boulder. Since the three members of the triple star system are so far away from each other [hundreds of astronomical units - the Earth-Sun distance], I see no reason why an Earth-mass planet would not be able to form around the primary star, 40 Eridani A, he said. If Vulcan life were to exist on the planet, the orbit of the planet would have to lie in a sweet spot around the star where liquid water could be present on its surface. Water is an essential ingredient for any organism to live long and prosper. For 40 Eridani A, this spot, or habitable zone, is 0.6 astronomical units from the star. That means Vulcans would get to celebrate a birthday about every six months. The SIM PlanetQuest instrument will be so accurate, it could measure the thickness of a nickel at a distance from Earth to the moon. Using a set of mathematical models based on Newton's Laws, Tanner was able to conclude that SIM would be able to definitively determine whether there is an Earth-mass planet orbiting in the habitable zone around 40 Eridani A, and could also determine its orbit. This is quite an exciting prospect, since NASA's Terrestrial Planet Finder mission, planned for launch after SIM, would not only be able to take a rudimentary picture of the planet, but also could search for signatures of life such as methane and ozone. When asked what life would be like on Vulcan, Tanner speculated that the inhabitants might be pale. A K dwarf star emits its light at wavelengths which are a bit redder compared to those from the sun, so I wonder whether it's harder to get a tan there, she said. The results of Tanner's simulations will be submitted for publication in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
