Re: [meteorite-list] Venus Catastrophic Resurfacing HypothesisChallenged

2010-04-26 Thread Sterling K. Webb

Listoids and Venus Fans,

The Global Catastrophe Hypothesis became a problem
as soon as the Magellan dataset was mostly complete. The
data was turned over to the crater-counters who are able
to date a planetary surface by the statistical distribution of
crater size, and date it quite precisely, too.

When they announced the age of the Venusian surface
as 520 million years, plus or minus a 40-50 million year
error (or 480 to 560 my), they were immediately surrounded
by hysterical geologists screaming that they had to be wrong.

The crater counters were replaced by other crater counters
who gave the same results. This is a narrow specialization --
crater counting -- there are only so many crater counters,

and it's a very precise technique that has dated every solid
planetary surface we can image with results that are both
consistent and to every appearance accurate everywhere.

A decade or so was wasted on geological mechanisms
that could re-surface without outside interference. They
were largely hooey that convinced no one, posing improbable
mechanisms to accomplish world-wide simultaneous subduction.
The problem is not a hypothesis problem; it is a fact problem
looking for a hypothesis.

If we take a step backward and look at events in the
ENTIRE solar system, we see that:

a) ~600 million years ago, the largest asteroid breakup
in the last 4 billion years occurred (the Flora Family),

b) starting at 600 million years ago, the impact rate in
the solar system jumped up to high levels not seen
for 3.2 billion years (dated by lunar impact spherules
collected by the Apollo missions),

c) between 600 million years ago and 500 million years
ago, the Earth had three catastrophically nasty ice ages,
including the Snowball Earth episode in which the entire
planet froze to the equator, the worst ice age ever,

d) 484 million years ago, the Earth suffered a prolonged
period in which the rate of meteoritic infall was up to 150
times greater than it is today,
http://www.psrd.hawaii.edu/Mar04/fossilMeteorites.html
and

e) the surface of Venus was wholly or partially melted and
resurfaced with fresh rock (just like the old days, huh?).

I see these events as connected, as I've been sometimes
posting here for the last 6 or 7 years. Or, they could be one
freakin' big coincidence...

So, I read the RTT paper with great interest. They advance
solid arguments for the conclusion that the RTT had to be
formed in one discrete episode or interval. In a word, that
it's datable. They then assert that it had to have formed very
early in the planet's history because thermal modeling
indicates that ribbon fabric formation requires an extremely
high thermal gradient... That is, a high internal heat flowing
up to the crust as it does at the end of planetary formation
and cooling. In other words, you can't form RTT unless the
crust is very hot. That is the extent of their dating attempt.

The ancient origin would be true in the case of the absence
of a viable geological catastrophic or global turnover model
ONLY IF you exclude impacts (giant or multiple) large enough
to melt the crust down to the mantle. Best way to prove your
case is to ignore anything that would disprove your case,
I always say.

The RTT are scattered in disconnected patches over the
planet. They could be a relict of ancient terrains or they
could be the places where the 100-300-kilometer asteroids
DIDN'T fall. The fall of planetoid sized bodies, of course,
heats the crust planet wide by degrading the impact energy
into thermal energy. The heat doesn't have to be internal
when you melt a planet's surface.

Hansen and Lopez have another paper on the RTT,
characterizing them as lava scrum ponds, also from
this same year (2009):
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/venus2009/pdf/2012.pdf
(I think you ought to hold it down to one theory a year.)

This is a strange idea since the RTT is 1-3 km. HIGHER than
the low flat plains -- why didn't the lava run off? But, then,
I'm no geologist and I don't really know how to make lava
run uphill... How you do dat? In fairness, a few RTT parches
are on the lowest level... but only a few small ones.

Another view on the RTT by another member of the
original Magellan team (this one from 1996):
http://www.agu.org/pubs/crossref/1996/96JE01245.shtml
Author of many papers on Venus; Google Ivanov Venus.

There's another theory of the RTT, the pulsating
continent theory. Bouncy continents... That sounds
like fun:
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL_udi=B6V61-4TRR8Y0-1_user=10_coverDate=11%2F30%2F2008_rdoc=1_fmt=high_orig=search_sort=d_docanchor=view=c_searchStrId=1310409062_rerunOrigin=google_acct=C50221_version=1_urlVersion=0_userid=10md5=1a74f8614c1c46478bfbfe77b807a05a

There seems to be this continuing effort in explaining
Venus' geology by mechanisms without outside interference.
I'm tempted to see it as the old we're-geologists---take-your-
asteroids-and-never-darken-my

2010-04-26 Thread Mark Ford

At the end of the day, many of the key people also perpetuate these conspiracy
myths because they sell an awful lot of books, plus it maybe gains them the
attention they probably never got as a kid. Imho it's the same with the crop
circles, UFO's, ghosts, yeti, bigfoot's, water monsters etc. Usually it's
often very intelligent but slightly deluded people, who feed off other much
more deluded people, and through positive re-enforcement you end up with a
community of people all firmly believing in exactly the same thing and unable
to accept the truth no matter what anyone else says.

People love being in groups with others of similar values it's as simple as
that (hey we all joined the met-list didn't we).

Problem comes when these theories start to skew the rest of society's view of
the truth too, I firmly believe that these conspiracy theories are not just
'harmless fun' they represent serious pollution and we should be far less
tolerant of many of them, so long as there is still room for being sensibly
open minded that is...

It is not only the theosophist religions that have a theological

In addition, a minority of Hindus, who promote Vedic science
and argue that the deevolution of human beings has been going
for the last few billion years also are very strong proponents of the

consider to be the impossibility for the Apollo astronauts to have
traveled to the Moon because of both physically or spiritual factors
that they argue are clearly explained in the Vedas. Their
theological arguments against the Moon landings bring real are
discussed in detail by a Hare Krishna web page, Man On The
Moon–A Colossal Hoax that Cost Billions of Dollars at;

http://krishna.org/man-on-the-moon-a-colossal-hoax-that-cost-billions-of-dollars/

For example, this web page states:

The Vedic account of our planetary system is
already researched, concluded, and perfect. The
Vedas state that the moon is 800,000 miles
farther from the earth than the sun. Therefore,
even if we accept the modern calculation of 93
million miles as the distance from the earth to
the sun, how could the “astronauts” have traveled
to the moon–a distance of almost 94 million miles–
in only 91 hours (the alleged elapsed time of the
Apollo 11 moon trip)?

Further down it, the above web page states:

Another important reason why the manned moon
landing must be a hoax is that, according to the
Vedas, each planet has its particular standard of living
and atmosphere, and no one can transfer from one
planet to another without becoming properly qualified.
This means that if someone wants to go to Mars, for
instance, he has to give up his present gross material
body and acquire another one suitable for life on
that particular planet.

As in case of the antievolution fervor of various Young and Old
creationists, I personally suspect that a significant force behind
the arguments behind the claims that the Moon Landings were
a hoax is a religious one. I also suspect that unlike the creationist
antievolutionists, the promoters of the Moon Landing hoax have
been for the most part, but not always, been careful to hide their
religious motivations behind seemingly secular web sites. Of
course as in case of antievolution, there are also a number of
conspiracy fans, who for purely secular, nonreligious reasons,
advocate and promote the fiction about there having been a
Moon Landing hoax.

religions, the Lemurian Fellowship, was stolen by
Richard Kieninger, who went into business with David
 Hatcher Childress.

Insanity has a logic of its own, in this case a well
developed framework of delusions. Why didn't the
Apollo astronauts land on the Moon? Because they
did not show the Moon dwellers' remains. It fits
right in with the Face on Mars for them.

It is not only the theosophist religions that have a theological
basis for denying human beings having landed on the Moon.
In addition, a minority of Hindus, who promote Vedic science
and argue that the deevolution of human beings has been going
for the last few billion years also are very strong proponents of the
Moon Landing hoax claims. This position is based on what they
consider to be the impossibility for the Apollo astronauts to have
traveled to the Moon because of both physically or spiritual factors
that they argue are clearly explained in the Vedas. Their
theological arguments against the Moon landings bring real are
discussed in detail by a Hare Krishna web page, Man On The
 Moon-A Colossal Hoax that Cost Billions of Dollars at;

http://krishna.org/man-on-the-moon-a-colossal-hoax-that-cost-billions-of
-dollars/

For example, this web page states:

The Vedic account of our planetary system is
already researched, concluded, and perfect. The
Vedas state that the moon is 800,000 miles
farther from the earth than the sun. Therefore,
even if we accept the modern calculation of 93
million miles as the distance from the earth to
the sun, how could the astronauts have traveled
to the moon-a distance of almost 94 million miles-
in only 91 hours (the alleged elapsed time of the
 Apollo 11 moon trip)?

Further down it, the above web page states:

Another important reason why the manned moon
landing must be a hoax is that, according to the
Vedas, each planet has its particular standard of living
and atmosphere, and no one can transfer from one
planet to another without becoming properly qualified.
This means that if someone wants to go to Mars, for
instance, he has to give up his present gross material
body and acquire another one suitable for life on
 that particular planet.

[meteorite-list] New hypersonic glider article

2010-04-26 Thread Darren Garrison
It sounds like the 13,000 miles per hour (around 5.8 km/s) speed is only during
the suborbital part of the flight, with impact speeds a much more believable
mere 3,600 miles per hour (around 1.6 km/s.)

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/04/26/falcon-hypersonic-missiles-project-aurora/

Military's Hypersonic Falcon Missile Test a Dud?

FOXNews.com

On the heels of last week's top-secret X37-B launch, the U.S. Air Force launched
-- and ultimately crashed -- an experimental hypersonic glider theoretically
capable of hitting Mach 20.

It was a watershed week for conspiracy theorists, with President Barack Obama
throwing his support behind several major upgrades to the country's
rapid-response strike capability.

On the heels of the top-secret X37-B launch, the U.S. Air Force launched an even
more secret experimental hypersonic glider able to travel more than 4,000 miles
in 30 minutes from launch. The craft -- dubbed the Falcon Hypersonic Technology
Vehicle 2 -- was launched via a Minotaur 4-Lite rocket Thursday from Vandenberg
Air Force Base, the Air Force announced.

Conspiracy theorists have long reported on a secret project known as Aurora --
a hypersonic spy plane capable of speeds up to Mach 6 (3,700 mph). The Falcon
seems to be the culmination of that project, but it's capable of much, much
more, according to a fact sheet from the Defense Advanced Research Projects
Agency (DARPA).

The sheet explains that once the vehicle accelerates into the upper atmosphere,
it is designed to separate from its booster and glide across the Pacific at
around 13,000 mph, or nearly Mach 20.

The test vehicle launched last week reached Mach 5 on launch, and was designed
to crash and sink into the sea and sink near Kwajalein Atoll, 2,000 miles
south-west of Hawaii, 30 minutes later and 4,000 miles from the launch site.

But in a statement released Friday night, DARPA said that while “the launch
vehicle executed first-of-its-kind energy management maneuvers, clamshell
payload fairing release and HTV-2 deployment,” all wasn't perfect with the
superfast craft. “Approximately 9 minutes into the mission, telemetry assets
experienced a loss of signal from the HTV-2. An engineering team is reviewing
available data to understand this event.”

The DARPA press release did not specify whether any of the test maneuvers were
completed by the Lockheed Martin built craft before controllers lost
communications with the craft, the site adds.

In the real world, Project Aurora is called the Prompt Global Strike (PGS)
program and it's actually part of the President's solution to maintaining peace
in non-nuclear times. President Obama signed a treaty with Russian President
Dmitri Medvedev last week that put both countries on the path to full nuclear
disarmament.

However, the U.S. part of the agreement states that the country can replace
every decommissioned nuclear weapon with a PGS missile. Within a week of the
treaty being signed, Obama welcomed in the technology to make it possible.

And overnight, Obama announced he would support deploying a new class of
hypersonic missiles that could hit any target on Earth within an hour.

Depending on the version the Pentagon chooses, the warhead would either split
into dozens of lethal fragments in the final seconds of its flight or simply
smash into its target, relying on devastating kinetic energy to destroy anything
in its path reports the Times of London. As a precision weapon its effects would
be quite different from the mass destruction inflicted by nuclear warheads
delivered by intercontinental ballistic missiles that can reach 13,400 mph.

The glider's speeds of 3,600 mph are more than seven times faster than the
Tomahawk guided missiles that were too slow to kill Osama bin Laden at an
Afghanistan training camp in 1998. The White House has requested almost $250
million for research into hypersonic technologies which harness shock waves
generated by a fast-moving missile to increase its speed further.

It reminded me quite a bit of Ourique or Noblesville, both type 4s.

[meteorite-list] Livingston Strewfield?

2010-04-26 Thread Richard Kowalski
Hey all,

As a non-hunter (except for a couple of unsuccessful attempts) I've been
interested like everyone else on the list to hear how the hunt is going and to
see the stones as they get announced.

Numerous requests have gone out for maps of the strewnfield and all of them
have met with complete silence. That is at least publicly.

That's fine as I understand those in the field don't want to give away their
secrets but is it really all that secret?

We all know that two were found on the grounds of the Iowa-Grant Elementary
School, which is located here:

http://tinyurl.com/25tbdfl

Knowing the inbound track, the towns within the strewnfield, at the very least
this location, and that it is calculated that the field is 20 miles or more in
length, it surprises me to see that no one is sharing more information on the
finds...

My question is, how long did it take before the Park Forest or Ash Creek
strewnfields and the locations of the associated finds start getting released
publicly?

We know that the Whetstone strewnfield is still essentially top secret even
though the area has been pretty thoroughly been covered and most who have
researched that fall know where the field is.

I'd be interested in others thoughts on how long it will be before people start
loosening up on their data points and why there is still so much secrecy about
where the finds are being made.

Thanks

[meteorite-list] More Challenges Await Japan's Asteroid Mission (Hayabusa)

2010-04-26 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.spaceflightnow.com/news/n1004/26hayabusa/

More challenges await Japan's asteroid mission
BY STEPHEN CLARK
SPACEFLIGHT NOW
April 26, 2010

Japan's battered Hayabusa spacecraft must steer through several
unprecedented course corrections using an improvised ion engine before
reaching its long-awaited return to Earth in June.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency announced last week Hayabusa is
scheduled to plow through the atmosphere and parachute to Earth just
after 11 p.m. on June 13, Australian time.

The homecoming in Australia will occur around 1400 GMT, JAXA said in a
statement. The probe is now traveling about 12 million miles from Earth.

The landing would complete an audacious seven-year round trip voyage to
an asteroid. Hayabusa was supposed to gather samples at asteroid
Itokawa, but its collection mechanism did not function as planned,
leaving that objective in doubt.

Officials are not sure whether any rocks or dust from the asteroid were
funneled into the craft's collection chamber.

Junichiro Kawaguchi, Hayabusa's project manager, said a lot can go wrong
during the probe's final two months in space.

The spacecraft is not in good shape, Kawaguchi said in an interview
earlier this month. If the spacecraft was in good condition, we would
assume it was an easy thing from this point.

Since its launch in 2003, Hayabusa has lost three of its four ion
engines, leaked out all of its chemical propellant and is down to a
single reaction wheel.

The trouble delayed Hayabusa's departure from Itokawa, which forced JAXA
to postpone the craft's return to Earth from 2007 until 2010.

Managers were close to declaring the $200 million mission a failure in
November, when Hayabusa's sole operational ion engine stopped working.
But controllers were unexpectedly able to link functioning components in
two different thrusters to continue propelling the spacecraft toward Earth.

Kawaguchi chalks up the daring mission's multiple comebacks to the
project's hardworking team and a lot of luck. He says he still is not
sure Hayabusa can finish the trip home.

I'm not optimistic, but I would love to be surprised, Kawaguchi said.

Despite firing for thousands of hours since November, the ion engine
face several shorter firings in the next few weeks that will exercise
the system through multiple starts and stops, officials said.

Ion engines are highly-efficient propulsion systems that produce thrust
by rapidly accelerating charged xenon gas particles.

The spacecraft's ion engine is not in good condition, Kawaguchi said.
There is only one reaction wheel left available. Everything is cause
for some concern.

Because its conventional thrusters are not operating, Hayabusa's ion
engine will fire four times in May and June to put the probe on course
for landing at the Woomera Test Facility in South Australia.

Every maneuver, including even the attitude maneuvers, has to rely on
the ion thrusters, Kawaguchi said.

Two burns around May 5 and May 29 will bend Hayabusa's trajectory to aim
for a point about 200 kilometers, or 120 miles, above Earth's surface.
Two more lengthy firings in early June will put the spacecraft on a
precise path toward landing.

That final maneuver will take about 20 hours or more, Kawaguchi said.
It just cannot happen instantaneously.

About a day before re-entry, Hayabusa will turn its sample container
toward the sun to heat the canister.

We extended the flight time more than three years, so the remaining
capacity [in the battery] is a concern, Kawaguchi said. We want to
heat it up and prevent it from becoming cold. We changed the separation
time as late as possible to three hours before entry.

The capsule will be spring-ejected from the Hayabusa mothership as it
flies within 25,000 miles of Earth.

The spacecraft releases the capsule by pushing a spring, Kawaguchi
said. When the capsule is released, a spinning motion is applied to the
capsule, so the capsule will have a spin at a very slow rate.

The 16-inch-wide canister will dive into the atmosphere at more than
25,000 mph. Temperatures around the capsule will reach about 4,900
degrees Fahrenheit, but the tiny craft will be protected by a
carbon-fiber heat shield.

The capsule will fly over Antarctica on the approach to Australia,
deploy its parachute after reaching the lower atmosphere, and float
gently to Earth while emitting a navigation beacon signal to nearby
recovery teams.

The Hayabusa mothership will also plummet into the atmosphere, but it
will burn up during re-entry, according to Kawaguchi.

Re: [meteorite-list] NWA Meteorites

2010-04-26 Thread Richard Kowalski
I know we used to see 55 gallon drums filled with NWAs during the Tucson Shows
years ago. The past few years I have not seen anything like that. At least not
out in the open at the various tents where the Moroccan dealers are located
around town. Years ago you'd see them at most tents.

I'm sure there are still many tons of uNWAs stashed away somewhere, waiting to
be released slowly some time in the future.

[meteorite-list] Moo-n Made From WI Cheese?

2010-04-26 Thread Greg Hupe

Dear List Members,

Thought I would take a little break from playing email catch-up. Here are a
couple of humorous photos from my Wisconsin meteorite hunt:

Wisconsin Cheese?
Cow #2995 from the fertile hunting grounds (reminded me of [NWA] 2995, the
lunar meteorite).

http://www.lunarrock.com/wisconsinmeteorite/moo-n.jpg

Got Meteorites?
In this cow pasture, as Bob King mentioned on his blog, these cows were
particularly interested in our wandering about in their turf.

http://www.lunarrock.com/wisconsinmeteorite/GotMeteorites.jpg

Curious Cows!
Michael Cottingham photographing his first Wisconsin meteorite find with a
couple of very curious cows. Just seconds after this image was taken, one of
the cows licked his hand almost taking the meteorite!

Molly the 'Meteorite Finding Lama' of Wisconsin, or at least a group of us
were hoping...

http://www.lunarrock.com/wisconsinmeteorite/Lama.jpg

Horse pasture where I found my one 33.7g find.
http://www.lunarrock.com/wisconsinmeteorite/HorsePasture.jpg

It was a great pleasure to meet up with old and new friends in the pursuit
of the newest of meteorites on planet Earth. I was able to meet people in
person who I have only communicated with over the Internet or have never had
the privilege to talk to. I have learned a lot from these dedicated
individuals in the pursuit of these celestial messengers. After reading much
of the emails posted to the List over the last week, I realize that
unfortunately I did not run into quite a few people. I am very happy to have
met, hunted and talked to everyone I encountered during this hunt, what a
rush!

Looking at the horses munching on the grass reminds me that I need to go mow
the lawn after nearly a month on the road hunting different locations.

Thank You, once again to the friendly folks of Wisconsin and the dedicated
meteorite people who contributed data to make the hunt a success!!!

Enjoy!
Greg

Hi Atul and all,

First, I am pretty sure that I received a Park Forest map from Atul
after I made the request. I know he shared information with
researchers. I would also say this is a trustworthy individual if you
want to give up your data so he can do some ploting.

With that said, what bothers me a bit while you may no longer collect
or buy meteorites, you certainly purchased meteorites from me at one of
the NIAG Conventions. I know you were using strictly for education but
you did buy them at that time. All my best to all.

Hello List,

I wanted to write a few things about the fantastic hunting experience last
week in Wisconsin. It was a real blast. ( No pun intended... THIS time.)

I knew I would naturally run into some long time friends, such as Mike,
Greg, Rubin, Robert, Geoff, Dave, Rob, Cottingham and many others. It was
great to see them all again. What I didn't know was that I would make such
terrific new friends.

On the way back to the hotel at the end of the first day's hunt, Jerry
and I drove by a couple of guys walking up to their cars. We pulled over to
ask if they had had any luck. They started telling us what they knew about
all of the finds so far... and VERY unselfishly invited us to join in the
hunt with them on the land they had received permission to hunt. I had never
had the pleasure of meeting these guys, but when they told me their names, I
instantly recognized them Larry Atkins and Karl Aston. We all hit if off
immediately and ended up becoming great friends over the next 2 and 1/2
days. Larry's bodacious enthusiasm and happy personality is quite
infectious. A very fun loving guy. And Karl, is one of the most laid back,
easy-to-get-along-with guys you could ever hope to meet. He worked
tirelessly driving around and asking for permission to hunt in the
ever-changing and growing strewnfield. I'm sure that all of you who already
know them
will agree completely.

The four of us were usually the very first (at least by a few minutes)to
meet for continental breakfast at 6:30am sharp each morning, and were in the
field hunting by 7:30am, not coming in until around 7:30pm. We often hunted
along fairly close to each other, and spent some of the time exchanging old
hunting stories. It was great. We also had the pleasure of teaming up with
a local photographer they had met and invited along for the hunt, Mark
Hirsch. This newbie was walking just several feet away from me and the
others when he had that magic moment and found his very first meteorite
ever. Another new member, christened into our crazy obsession. It was a true
pleasure to meet and spend some time with him as well. I have a feeling
we'll all be seeing more of him at future falls.
( You can see the team in action in today's RFSPOD. A big thanks to Bob
King and Michael Johnson for posting the photo! Its a great shot.)

Mine and Jerry's overall experience there was perfect. Everyone was very
friendly. The weather was great, and the scenery was beautiful. I saw quite
a bit of the native wildlife, including a dozen or more wild turkeys, a mink
or muskrat, a duck sitting on her nest of eggs, and my first wild badger (
probably was good that I was sitting IN the car when he popped up out of his
hole just a few feet away and stared at me for a minute or so! He didn't
look very happy to see me).

In the end, we did technically find some meteorites, small as they were.
In fact, as far as I know, I probably hold the dubious distinction of one of
my finds possibly being THE smallest specimen found . a whopping 3.2g.
But, hey. I'm not complaining! ;-)

And then there's the incredible experience of the young school boy finding
the meteorite live on camera! Unbelievable. A quick shout-out of thanks to
Mike Farmer for calling and alerting us to the finds there, enabling us to
expand our search area.

Very best wishes to all those who went and/or are planning on going. Good
luck!

Sincerely,
Robert Woolard

Re: [meteorite-list] NWA Meteorites

2010-04-26 Thread Adam Hupe
Only a trickle is coming out these days. The sharp decline started over three
years ago. Many Moroccans who used to deal meteorites have now gone back to
their old jobs since there is no longer enough to support the trade. Others
have raised their wholesale prices beyond retail of a few years ago. The
Saharan gold rush days are definitely over with only a handful of wholesale
suppliers left.

Adam

Re: [meteorite-list] Volcanic Ash is Magnetic

2010-04-26 Thread tracy latimer

Part of the problem with trying to search for meteorites in Hawaii (problem,
what problem? many of you probably think ;)) is that, in addition to our
meteorite-inhospitable climate, many of our native lava rocks are metallic
enough to trip a metal detector, and are weakly attracted to a rare earth
magnet.  Fresh ones also can be easily mistaken for meteorites by casual
inspection.  Hawaii is one big meteor-wrong!

Best! (frustratedly)

 Hmm. Very interesting.
I was recently tryring out my new metal detector (thanks, Ruben) on our
property in southern Utah and discovered that the lava bomb boulders
strewn across the landscape are hot rocks and are slightly mag-attracted.
The boulders were ejected from Boulder Mountain and Thousand Lake Mountain
20 to 30 million years ago in a lava flow eruption. They were distributed
around the area by subsequent glacial activity. In addition, I found a great
deal of aluminum foil, and a few bullet casings. No meteorites... yet.

Re: [meteorite-list] Venus Catastrophic ResurfacingHypothesisChallenged

2010-04-26 Thread Kelly Beatty
Sterling and all...

A decade or so was wasted on geological mechanisms
that could re-surface without outside interference. They
were largely hooey that convinced no one, posing improbable
mechanisms to accomplish world-wide simultaneous subduction.

*way* too sweeping a generalization. it's true that there's no consensus on
what triggered the resurfacing of Venus, but the discussion mostly surrounds
whether it's periodic (i.e. it'll happen again) or was a one-time event that
fundamentally altered the planet's internal heat flow.

regardless, large-scale cratering only 600 million years ago would leave an
unmistakable gravity signature - and there ain't none.

[meteorite-list] AstroDay Festival, May 1 in Hilo

2010-04-26 Thread Gary Fujihara
Aloha listoids,

'Tis the season for Astronomy Day events, and one of the world's largest
programs will be held this Saturday, May 1st, from 10am to 4pm at the Prince
Kuhio Plaza in Hilo, Hawaii.

AstroDay Festival is Hawai'i Island's version of the popular event started by
Northern California Amateur Astronomers then president Doug Berger in 1972.
AstroDay is a Celebration of Astronomy and Hawaiian Culture, regularly attracts
12,000+ attendees annually, and has earned national recognition and won awards
7 of the 8 years it has been held since its inception in 2002, including the
Best Astronomy Day awards in 2002 and 2007 (we didn't enter in 2008 and 2009).

AstroDay will feature interactive exhibits from every observatory on Mauna Kea,
demonstrations and presentations, Hawaiian cultural displays, Starlab
planetarium shows, solar viewing, a Kids Corner, and hula and Hawaiian musical
performances throughout the day. Many prizes will be given away, including
several Celestron telescopes. I may even have a few meteorites on display and
to touch and hold at the event. There are shared learning opportunities for
the entire family, and stargazing later that evening at the Visitor Information
Station on Mauna Kea with hosts from the Hilo Astronomy Club and West Hawaii
Astronomy Club.

More information can be found here:
http://astroday.net/

Highlights of previous events can be found here:

Anyone in the Hilo area is welcome to join us for this free event. Hope to see
some of you there!

I can help with this as this was what our office does in-part: the
issuance/request of licenses.

Without a license, one would indeed risk being advised they are
unlawfully exploiting copyrighted material.

In the end, it's all about the size of the endeavor and the amount of
revenue generated--and to be clear, it would be simplest if it were
non-revenue generating. To properly do this, one would advise the
content owner of the extent of distribution and expected revenues.

Got Meteorites?
In this cow pasture, as Bob King mentioned on his blog, these cows were
particularly interested in our wandering about in their turf.

couple of very curious cows. Just seconds after this image was taken, one of
the cows licked his hand almost taking the meteorite!

hoping...

Horse pasture where I found my one 33.7g find.
http://www.lunarrock.com/wisconsinmeteorite/HorsePasture.jpg

It was a great pleasure to meet up with old and new friends in the pursuit of
the newest of meteorites on planet Earth. I was able to meet people in person
who I have only communicated with over the Internet or have never had the
privilege to talk to. I have learned a lot from these dedicated individuals in
the pursuit of these celestial messengers. After reading much of the emails
posted to the List over the last week, I realize that unfortunately I did not
run into quite a few people. I am very happy to have met, hunted and talked to
everyone I encountered during this hunt, what a rush!

Looking at the horses munching on the grass reminds me that I need to go mow
the lawn after nearly a month on the road hunting different locations.

Thank You, once again to the friendly folks of Wisconsin and the dedicated
meteorite people who contributed data to make the hunt a success!!!

Enjoy!
Greg

2010-04-26 Thread Rob Wesel
The trouble with obtaining the TV coverage these days is the fact that it's
all outsource and stockpiled by third party vendors. I paid $350 for the Ash
Creek coverage and for that I got one single use copy that was expressly
forbidden to reproduce. That was for about 30 minutes of coverage. There is
plenty to glean from the web but I can only imagine it is protected too.
Best to look at all the liability of such an endeavor. Park Forest was a
simpler time.

Re: [meteorite-list] Venus Catastrophic Resurfacing Hypothesis Challenged

2010-04-26 Thread Sterling K. Webb

Kelly, Paul, List,

... large-scale cratering only 600 million years ago
would leave an unmistakable gravity signature...

For the benefit of the audience (if there is any),
the gravity signature (of terrestrial carters, the only
ones we can compare closely to surface geology) is
caused by post-impact loss of density inside the crater,
creating the distinctive central low.

Besides the loss of excavated material, in small
simple craters this is due to an interior breccia lens
made from the local rock. In complex craters, models
suggest the gravity anomaly is from fractured target
rocks all across the floor of the crater. All the models
and realities elsewhere are for a surface of cool solid
rock which can form a breccia of solid rocks or
fractured strata.

There are only 900-odd craters on Venus (and no
small ones due to the protection of the atmosphere),
as contrasted with over 200,000 on Mars. The surface
of the Moon is saturated with millions of craters at every
scale. The Earth has less than 200 verified craters.

The largest crater on Venus (270-280 km) is the same
size as the largest crater on the Earth (300 km). The size
distribution is similar on the two planets. The larger
number of Venus craters is roughly proportional to
the Earth's IF you accept the view that Venus has had
no tectonic activity great enough to remove craters
since the time of the re-surfacing of Venus. The lack
of tectonic activity is widely accepted because a variety
of other evidences.

...unmistakable gravity signature - and there ain't none.

   Here's one of that none:
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc1994/pdf/1026.pdf

Mead is the biggest crater on Venus. It has a signature.
It is the only crater whose gravity signature has a paper(s)
and I suspect it is the only one analyzed. Why the biggest
crater on Venus? Because it's only one where you would
have the ghost of a chance to detect any signature at all.

In summary, as a rule of thumb, we suggest that useful information
about the subsurface structure of impact basins cannot be gained at
spacecraft altitudes greater than about 1/10 the diameter of the basin.
At altitudes approaching the basin's diameter even the signature
associated with the topography of a basin may be difficult to
separate from surrounding structures.
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc1994/pdf/1269.pdf

Gee, maybe that's why there's no crater signatures.

It doesn't explain why the standard NASA handout on
Magellan states unequivocally that the gravity signatures
follow the local topography closely (implying no crater
signatures when we have one signature and others are
likely undetectable). Press Release Science -- my favorite.

Some sources conclude that the depth of Venus craters
is greater than expected by the standard crater modeling.
http://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu/full/seri/LPICo/0790//065.000.html

Other sources say the depth of Venus's craters is exactly
the same as predicted by the models, except for very small
and very large craters which are shallower. It's Venus -- why
should anyone agree about anything? If crater depths are
greater, there is no agreement as to what would cause it,
and certainly the great depth of Cleopatra and some others
needs explaining.

One more wrinkle. Existing craters would not be from
the episode of crust-melting impactors. The existing craters
could not form in plastic crust. They would be the record
of impacts from the time the crust because rigid enough to
form craters up the present day. The age of the surface is
the age the post-molten solid crust. Since there is no
agreement on the depth and plasticity of the crust, crucial
factors in crater formation analysis, there's nothing very
certain about the other formation issues.

Lastly, the tessera occupy 8% to 12% of the Venusian
surface (depending on who you read) and the tessera (RTT)
contain 8.7% of Venus's craters. Since the RTT is obviously
subject to deformation forces (20% of the tessera craters are
distorted), a few craters may have been lost, but only a few.
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc1996/pdf/1210.pdf

However, the number of craters on tessera relative to
area is essentially the same as the rest of Venus. IF the
RTT were 4 to 5 times older than the rest of Venus, dating
to ancient planetary formation times, wouldn't you think
the crater density would be a LITTLE more than on the
young terrain of the rest of the planet? I would. Even if
it was only twice as old, there would be some numerically
distinct marker.

Thanks, but I think I'll stand pat with my cards from
the last go-round-the-table.

Re: [meteorite-list] Moon Landing Hoaxers

2010-04-26 Thread E.P. Grondine
Hi Paul (and Mark) -

You're absolutely right. Besides David Hatcher Childress's operations in
Katmandu, you also have Doug Kenyon and his Atlantis Rising magazine part of
this ring. Think Falwell's Moral Majority had bad effects? Imagine the
effects on BJP/National Party politics in a nation of over a billion population
armed with nuclear weapons. A minority of a billion is a large number. (Mark,
you're absolutely right about the money.)

Of course theosophism was simply an attempt to wed re-incarnation with
western religions, so its a natural fit.

As for the current confusion, Sterling, do you want to tell Paul about the
Apollo film stock again?

Paul, if we could only agree on the comet impacts at the YD, and the total
cometary impact threat as easily.

E.P.

Their
theological arguments against the Moon landings bring real are
discussed in detail by a Hare Krishna web page, Man On The
 Moon-A Colossal Hoax that Cost Billions of Dollars at;

http://krishna.org/man-on-the-moon-a-colossal-hoax-that-cost-billions-of

 Other revealing web pages are:

The Apollo Moon Landings are Science Fiction
 http://krishna.org/the-apollo-moon-landings-are-science-fiction/

The Moon Missions: Oh Ye of Little Faith
 http://krishna.org/the-moon-missions-oh-ye-of-little-faith/

 Moon Mission Web Pages
 http://krishna.org/tag/moon-mission/

 Yours,

 Paul H.

[meteorite-list] What else could have hit Venus?

2010-04-26 Thread E.P. Grondine
Hi Sterling -

Short answer: Try a comet.

I am suspicious of the crater counts based on the Apollo samples data, as the
Moon is part of a two body system, the Moon and the Earth. It is very true that
the money for crater counting has been too low; even the money for
re-processing earlier planetary surface imagery has been too low. We do have
one data set right at hand, Earth craters, but guess what - the money for
studying them has been too low as well. The possible Shiva crater demonstrates
this all too well.

We need to know exactly what hit when. For the last 13,000 years or so, it has
been comet fragments. Whether this represents the long term trend I do not
know, but I believe Shoemaker may have had it right.

Re: [meteorite-list] WI hunt

2010-04-26 Thread E.P. Grondine
Hi everyone -

First off, now if each of you had just taken a video camera with you, your
footage could be combined into a great show, and the clearances for the
original footage would be obtained by the production company. (Perhaps Steve
and Geoff may be able to help with this.)

Congratulations to all of you meteorite men who hunted and are hunting the
Livingston fall.

Second, I can't remember now who gave that elementary school talk, (%#$%$^
stroke) but thank you for it. I'm sure other schools in the area would like to
have one given as well (hint, hint).

I think of all the small fingered meteorite hunters who will be out there
looking for their own rocks from space in the future, and some of you here are
going to have to help them with their finds.

good hunting, and congratulations Joe -

This is great news Joe!

Congradulations on this teriffic find. It took monumental effort and
rare dedication. I think that when someone is as fired up as you it's
inevitable that he will score. How cool it must have been to have your
kids right there at the moment.. Sweet! I'm not surprised at your
success, you deserve it.
It was a true pleasure to get to know you and spend some good times in
the field and I hope to see you at the next one.

As far as that goes, it was a great pleasure to meet so many of you.
I'm not gonna name em all, you know who you are and I thank you for a
wonderful hunt and the good words passed on by Ruben and Robert
Woolard, too kind.

For those headed back or just arriving, Good Luck!

Larry

PS It took me 6 days and about 130 miles of walking, and a new
transmission for my truck, to find 33.7 grams of pure fusion crusted
pleasure ! It's got to be the hardest won meteorite I ever found.

Subject: [meteorite-list] 332gr WI find!!

Listees,
I found a 332 gram piece from the WI fall. Finally after 9 days in
the field persistence paid off. I will post some pics on the skyrock
cafe soon.

Best Wishes,
Joe Kerchner
