Re: [meteorite-list] Al haggounia 001
Reclassifications in the MetBull can occur when somebody submits to the NomCom, or NomCom independently finds, sufficient evidence to warrant publication of an erratum. For simple errors, the evidence can be very simple (e.g., this meteorite was published as an LL5, but it actually has Fa19 olivine, so it is really an H5). But when things get difficult or complicated, usually a refereed publication is needed to document the claim. Al Haggounia 001 is the latter case, and the appropriate evidence has not been submitted or published, to my knowledge. Jeff On 6/8/2011 3:02 AM, JoshuaTreeMuseum wrote: Dan: Probably not. [meteorite-list] AD: Special: NWA 6826 - the Best Karoonda-Chondrite Chladni's Heirs ever had
Dear meteorite lovers and experts, one of the grand specialties of Chladni's Heirs are the CK-Chondrites. Still this year, we will receive the number for our 20th CK, all among each other unpaired - as many as nobody else had in that time span. Nevertheless the CK-chondrites remain rarer than any CV, CO or any eucrite, diogenite and howardite. Today, we have the honor and the joy to introduce to you, that CK, which we consider the best CK of all we ever had: NWA 6826. Here already for the most hasty ones, the specimens! http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/specials/special-nwa6826.html Much we explained about the CK-group in our former Specials, their genetic relation to the CV and CO-group, their differences to these types and about the characteristics, which make the CK-group so interesting and fascinating. With NWA 6826 today, we will abstain from lengthy explanations and iterations, (in case Weir's Studies will help you) because the beauty of this very material touches the heart of every collector. Time it is - that we learned from many of our CKs, and now this very NWA 6824 is the most incontrovertible argument for that - to rewrite the old books, which disqualify the CKs as dull, chondrules- ad CAI-poor and featureless, due to their sulphides and iron-oxides and shock-blackening. (Probably they had only Kobe, Karoonda and old HaH 280/281 at hand). NWA 6826 speaks a different language! It demonstrates par excellence how vivid, busy and spectacular CKs can be, displaying a huge variety of different details. Absolutely NECESSARY for you to get, what we're talking about, is TO ENLARGE THE THUMBNAIL PHOTOS by clicking, to fully enjoy that extravaganza and not missing out by skimming quickly the page. NWA 6824 is weakly shocked with S2. And it is very fresh and unweathered with a weathering grade of W1. We had also even slightly fresher ones, W0/1 among our palette of CKs, though they were not so dazzling like this jewel now. Note also the great snakeskin of fusion crust on the backside of the endcuts: http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/specials/nwa6826-688.5g-end3.JPG Well, you might be worried about the costs for such an overwhelming material, and finally our Moroccan friends and colleagues raised the issue here on the list of the dramatically changed situation, which is going to happen since a longer while in the NWA-scene. But - we are proud to tell you, that we decided to make today an offer, which regarding the quality, should beat out the price levels, which you are used to commonly see for the CK-group; and priced all specimens - from the centerpiece of your carbonaceous-section to the meaningful reference partslice, all grinded and polished, at one price, a reference to the Golden Times of NWA of 25$/g. With a tkw of 1.3kg we hope, that nobody has to miss out and we can launch this Special earlier than usually. Nevertheless, as always, it would be very helpful, if you would send us a wish-list with the ranking of your desired specimens, to avoid delays and traffic jam. Once again, here they are now: http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/specials/special-nwa6826.html Enjoy! There's plenty more land where that came from, and the differences in distance from the fall-site are negligible, if they exist at all. But we are still hunters, and, having found the site and done some research, we decided that it was a lost cause. That was our conclusion, plain and simple. Re: [meteorite-list] A Meteor impacted the Sun?
All prominences are dim compared with the surface of the Sun. If the surface is occluded by the Moon, prominences are visible to the naked eye. Outside of rather exotic optical systems, there is no way to block the surface of the Sun from the ground well enough to see prominences, so the only way pre-technological people would have seen prominences would have been during total solar eclipses. We see prominence images made through narrow band filters, typically H-alpha, where the prominence is bright compared with the surface (or more accurately, nearly all of the prominence light is passed, and nearly all of the surface light is blocked). [meteorite-list] Rosetta Comet Probe Enters Hibernation in Deep Space
http://www.esa.int/esaCP/SEM38RJ4LOG_index_0.html Rosetta comet probe enters hibernation in deep space European Space Agency 8 June 2011 The final command placing ESA's Rosetta comet-chaser into deep-space hibernation was sent earlier today. With virtually all systems shut down, the probe will now coast for 31 months until waking up in 2014 for arrival at its comet destination. Today's dramatic event marks the end of the hugely successful first phase of Rosetta's ten-year cruise and the start of a long, dark hibernation during which all instruments and almost all control systems will be silent. The deep sleep is made necessary by the craft's enormous distance from the Sun and the weakness of the sunlight falling on its solar panels, which cannot produce enough electricity to power the probe fully. Arcing through millions of kilometres of space Between now and January 2014, Rosetta will arc unattended through millions of kilometres of cold, distant space, heading toward a rendezvous with 67-P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Only the computer and several heaters will remain active. These will be automatically controlled to ensure that the entire satellite doesn't freeze as its orbit takes it from 660 million km from the Sun out to 790 million km and back between now and 2014. We sent the command via NASA's 70 m Deep Space Network station in Canberra, Australia, ensuring the signal was transmitted with enough power to reach Rosetta, which is now 549 million km from Earth, said ESA's Spacecraft Operations Manager Andrea Accomazzo. We'll monitor via ESA's 35 m station at New Norcia in Australia for a few days to see if any problems occur, but we expect to receive no radio signal until 2014. Rosetta's on her own now. Wake up call in 2014 On 20 January 2014, a timer will wake the slumbering spacecraft, which will then transmit a signal to Earth to announce that its revival. Mission controllers will then spend several weeks gradually warming up and reactivating the spacecraft in preparation for its rendezvous with the comet in July 2014. Mission controllers at ESOC, ESA's Space Operations Centre, Darmstadt, have spent most of the past year preparing for hibernation. A special hibernation mode of the spacecraft was designed by engineers at EADS Astrium, the main industrial prime contractor that build Rosetta, to allow it to survive the large distances from the Sun during its cruise. All of the scientific instruments were switched off by the end of March. In April and May, with Rosetta orbiting at more than 600 million km from the Sun, tests were conducted with the solar arrays to confirm that sufficient power would be available for today's hibernation. Final shut-down command sent today At 08:00 UT (10:00 CEST) today, Rosetta automatically started spinning, which will stabilise the probe while the normal attitude control system is off throughout hibernation, and at 12:58 UT (14:58 CEST) the final shut-down command was sent. Confirmation of successful entry into hibernation came at 14:13 UT (16:13 CEST) when radio contact was lost, as expected. With flybys of asteroids Steins in 2008 and Lutetia in 2010, Rosetta has already delivered excellent scientific results, says Paolo Ferri, Head of ESOC's Solar and Planetary Mission Operations Division. Hibernation is a necessary step to reach the final target. We are now looking forward to 2014, when Rosetta becomes the first spacecraft to track the life of a comet as it arcs in toward the Sun. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Mars Express: Springtime at Mars' South Pole
http://www.esa.int/esaCP/SEMZBQJ4LOG_index_0.html Springtime at Mars' south pole European Space Agency 7 June 2011 ESA's Mars Express celebrates eight years in space with a new view of ice in the southern polar region of Mars. The poles are closely linked to the planet's climate and constantly change with the seasons. Their study is an important scientific objective of the mission. Ulyxis Rupes in context About two-thirds of the image is covered by part of the southern polar ice cap and other scattered ice deposits, near a feature known as Ulyxis Rupes. The left side of the image is dominated by the polar cap's ice shield, which is covered by dark dusty material that hides the bright ices beneath. At this location, further than 1000 km from the south pole itself, the ice is relatively thin: radar data indicate it is only about 500 m thick, whereas near the south pole it can reach more than 3.7 km. Features near Ulyxis Rupes However, on the north-facing cliffs the layers of ice and dust are discernible. These form part of the polar, layered deposits. The cliffs are often curved, which could mean that they are shaped by underlying impact craters. The elevation of this region decreases markedly from south to north, dropping in steps by about 1500 m in total from left to right across the image. Elevation of Ulyxis Rupes Just northward of the ice shield, about halfway across the image, there are large ice deposits that are heavily covered by overlying material blown into long dunes by the prevailing winds in this region. The orientation of the dunes suggests the wind must come predominantly from the northwest. Ulyxis Rupes in high resolution With increasing distance from the south pole, ice becomes confined to larger impact craters, such as the one in the top right of the image. These provide the best shelter. The ice itself is slightly offset towards the north because, with the sunlight coming from the north, the southern walls of the crater tend to warm up more, causing the ice to melt. Ulyxis Rupes is a large cliff and is the only named feature in this image ('rupes' is the Latin term for cliff). With a length of 390 km and a height of up to 1 km, it is just visible at the top right of this image where it intrudes on the immediate left of the crater there. Ulyxis Rupes in perspective Puzzling parallel structures in the martian dust can be seen in the bottom right quarter of the image. Although their origin is uncertain, it is possible that they are the result of underlying ice deposits, permanently frozen because they are protected by overlying dust and rocks. The image was taken in January 2011, during the southern spring on Mars. At the moment it is summer there, but when the southern winter begins in March 2012, the temperatures will drop again and more ice will accumulate. Mars Express will be waiting. The good news is I am picking up hot rocks, 3-5 inches down, which is the same as my calibration stone(200 gram .unwa, will get a hit) These two fields are about 50 acers each on this 400 acer farm ( he is farming 4000 acers thow) I might get access? I need a coil ( i think, That will pick up hot rocks and chondrites 8-10 inches down, If there is any more meteorites! (if this is a old fall) Any sugestions. This past week My old school freind did plant, If he planted corn, I can still hunt for a while, anything else its over for the year. the rolls will be too narrow except his two pastures.I can walk them, But the Ticks are bad this year. Both of these are so different, But they are chondrites. In the past month I find 5 other stones that look like they could be Achondrites, (will post later) I have no interest in selling meteorites, I think these should go to our local Geology museum which has a cool meteorite display. 6 yeras I was on a mission to find a meteorite, I think now it is complete. I found these out side the small town where I grew - up These would be the 1st chondrites found in Butler county Ohio. The only other meteorite found here is the Fairfeld meteorite (iron) If all the other suspect stones turn out to be meteorites also, then a few miles north of where the last glacier ended in ohio, Indiana and Illinoise is where meteorite hunters should be looking. I think the sandy-gravel soil drains water quickly, and meteorites may be perserved longer then people think. Also I have found 40+ artifacts since april, this farm I had found artifacts 25 years ago. will post them also. The soil is only 8-10 deep on the glacial morian, 5 paleo points have found here, I found 3 of them, Most of the artifacts are Adena Mound builder material. But here is the albums of the two meteorites. [meteorite-list] More than one way to skin a strewn field
Park Forest, Steger, Crete, University Park, Olympia fields, Chicago Heights and a few more towns still hold undiscovered meteorite wonders of the Park Forest Meteorite kind. These are pretty average. After over a year long drought I found these at a garage sale so it was a thrill. Three individuals, 260 grams total. Pretty fresh. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y249/razor_wire/newpfshockveins3.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y249/razor_wire/newpfs2.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y249/razor_wire/newpfchondrules50s4brecs5.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y249/razor_wire/newpf12.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y249/razor_wire/newpf10s6.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y249/razor_wire/newpf1.jpg Bill __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
