Re: [meteorite-list] Possible Tektite
Hi Phil, Just a thought...did you do any tests to determine what this is? Hardness? Specific Gravity? The common consciences of the picture is quartz, so the hardness should be close to 7 mohs and the specific gravity about 2.65. A streak plate has a hardness of about 7. So if you took a coffee cup, turn it over to expose the unglazed ring that it sits on, and try to scratch the specimen, it should feel like it sliding across the surface, no scratch or very very little scratch. If it's something other that quartz, you likely would get a good scratch. Just saying! Cheers! Hi List, This is stupid. What is the harm in letting the stone be classified? Slice off 20 grams and donate it to science. It is the right thing to do. This is not a government issue as Adam said. These are private individuals hoarding the stone - which they are legally entitled to do. Just like the multi-billion dollar private corporations are entitled to hide their hoards of cash in offshore tax havens. The government shouldn't be allowed to step in and force their hand - they should volunteer to do the right thing. Sadly, greed controls many interests, private and government. It's MINE MINE MINE! As soon as the press or media becomes involved, it quickly becomes a government issue. 90% of the time, the media does more harm than good. It seems if something might have a bit of value, governments are quick to restrict access or try to control it. No press is a good thing! Re: [meteorite-list] New conflict concerning the Grefsen mass of the Oslo meteorite
Martin, Thanks for posting! I think I was able to decipher the article's translation. I am left with the impression that all the Norwegian scientists are asking is that the Grefsen be classified? I did check the MetBull and this is the result: No records found for meteorites with names that contain Grefsen; No synonyms containing Grefsen were found. Seems incredibly short-sighted of the holders of the main mass not to want it classified given that all that all they will give up is 20g! Plus the value will be enhanced. Furthermore, this is also the type of bad behavior that does get attention of government officials, and so at some point they may indeed change the current finder is owner rule to finder must give all to the Kingdom of Norway. Or perhaps this is a Norwegian turf war? Perhaps an outsider could convince the owners to do the right thing and get it classified. Has anyone contacted them? Carl Agee * Carl B. Re: [meteorite-list] New conflict concerning the Grefsen mass of the Oslo meteorite
the main problem is that Knutjurgen has always claimed to be chasing meteorites as a scientist and was able to convince the finder to sell to him to protect it from us evil dealers. Now look who is just after the money. I was attempting to acquire the mass, and if I had been successful, I assure it would be classified by now. That being said, I also had a run-in with that woman from the museum, who told me that we must turn all Moss meteorites in to the museum, though not required by law:) When I asked them if they were going to help us hunt, she said no, and left back to Oslo without spending one second traipsing through the woods like the rest of us did. No clean hands in this argument. But it is a travesty that he is unwilling to donate some of the 5 kilos for classification and display at the museum. Re: [meteorite-list] New conflict concerning the Grefsen mass of the Oslo meteorite
One problem is that the press rarely mentions collaboration between scientists, collectors and finders. The owner of the main mass may not trust their government and feel the need to protect his/her assets. I am sure a lot of U.S. finds are not being reported or shared for the same reason. Hunters are keenly aware that the 10 pound limit here is just a farce. If the U.S. government determines their is cultural or scientific value, then the finder is sure to lose their find regardless of any weight limit. Good luck to anyone who finds the first American lunar. I am sure they will be very protective because government officials and politicians tell lies most of the time to the people they serve and are never held accountable for it. Some will never get the message as I still see people openly selling meteorites found on dry lake beds here in Nevada although they are not to be used for commercial purposes. 89% of the land here is B.L.M. which covers virtually all of the dry lake beds. These days, No good deed goes unpunished so expecting somebody to freely collaborate may soon be a thing of the past. [meteorite-list] Mars Rover Opportunity Update: October 24-30, 2013
http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html#opportunity OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Seeking the Sun's Rays as Winter Approaches - sols 3467-3472, Oct. 24, 2013-Oct. 30, 2013: Opportunity is ascending the northern edge of 'Solander Point' at the rim of 'Endeavour Crater.' The rover is maintaining favorable northerly tilts for improved energy production as winter approaches. On Sol 3467 (Oct. 24, 2013), Opportunity bumped 4.3 feet (1.3 meters) towards the outcrop called 'Waratah.' The next sol had the rover use the robotic arm to collect a Microscopic Imager (MI) mosaic of the surface target, called 'Baobab,' and then place the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) on the same for a multi-sol integration. On Sol 3471 (Oct. 29, 2013), Opportunity continued the ascent up Solander heading toward another energy 'lily pad,' driving about 95 feet (29 meters) nearly due south, and collecting a set of post-drive Panoramic Camera (Pancam) and Navigation Camera (Navcam) panoramas. On the following sol, the rover continued driving with a nearly 33 feet (10-meter) drive toward another energy lily pad. As of Sol 3472 (Oct. 30, 2013), the solar array energy production was 299 watt-hours with an atmospheric opacity (Tau) of 0.510 and a solar array dust factor of 0.488. Total odometry is 23.93 miles (38.51 kilometers). __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Greenland Meteorite?
Has anybody else heard about this:A big meteor impact has probably occurred in Southern Greenland at 61 25N, 44 26W on Tuesday, December 9th app. 08.11UTC (05.11am local time). The position is on the ice cap app. 50 kilometers NE of Narsarsuaq Airport. The position has been determined on the basis of observations made by a Danish and a Norwegian trawler near the east coast of Greenland, and a Danish trawler at a position in the bay off Julianehaab. Based on fairly accurate direction findings and the fact, that the trawlers were situated on both sides of Southern Greenland it can be determined, that the meteorite fell on land. The relevant trawlers are:Halten Trawl, Norwegian at 62 05N, 41 10WRegina C, Danish at 60 55N, 51 35W Timmarut, Danish at 60 13N, 46 43WObservations of the satelite lighttrack from Nuuk indicates that the meorite passed a bit south of Nuuk in southeasterly direction towards the mentioned impact site in Southern Greenland.Seismic disturbances have been observed on Svalbard and Finmarka (Norway). These tremors are observed at 08.21UTC and 08.23UTC and are assumed to relate to the impact or the passage of the meteorite through the atmosphere. The signals did not allow a seismic localization of the event. The observations are made by NORSAR (Norwegian Seismic Array), Kjeller, Norway. Fainter signals were observed in Finland and Germany. The seismic stations in Greenland (Sonder Stromfjord and Danmarkshavn) has no observations. Further seismic data will be collected from Iceland and Canada in order to confirm the visual localization.Observations from the satellites ERS1 and ERS2 are being planned. These satellites observe the surface of the Earth using radar. The flashes observed in conjunction with the meteorite were so bright as to turn night into daylight at a distance of 100 kilometers and can be compared to the light af a nuclear explosion in the atmosphere. However, we stress that there is no reason to belive other than natural causes.During the day, the position will be overflown by an ice reconnaissance plane, from the Ice Central in Narsarsuaq on its planned flight from Kap Farvel to Nuuk. The event can in size probably be compared to the Kap York meteorite, that in prehistoric time fell in Melville Bay, Sassivik south of Thule. Findings from the meteorite consist of a number of iron meteorites totalling 50 tons. One of these ironfragments can be seen in Copenhagen outside the Geological Museum.Collecting and studying material from this meteorite has great scientific value. It is fortunate that the meteorite fell on land, but a search on the ice cap is difficult and in winter impeded by bad weather and darkness. Since December 9th 30-100cm of snow has fallen in the area and before summer smaller fragments will be covered by 3 meters of snow. According to Danish law, findings of meteorite material must be turned over to the authorities, in this case they will be the property of the Greenland Home Rule. These investigations are coordinated by Geophysical Dept. at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen in cooperation with:Tycho Brahe Planetarium, Copenhagen.Copenhagen Astronomical SocietyNational Survey and Cadastre, DenmarkNORSAR, Kjeller, NorwayDanish Center for Remote Sensing, Technical University of Denmark __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] China's Next Moon Mission Is Carrying A Rover (Chang'e 3)
http://www.space.com/23416-china-moon-mission-bay-of-rainbows.html China's Next Moon Mission Targets 'Bay of Rainbows' by Leonard David space.com October 31, 2013 China is making major headway in its mission to land a rover on the moon - a big step forward in the nation's ambitious lunar exploration plans. At China's Xichang Satellite Launch Center, the moon-bound Chang'e 3 spacecraft is undergoing its final tests ahead of a planned launch in early December. Meanwhile, a Long March 3B carrier rocket, reportedly modified with new technologies and improved reliability, is set to reach the launch center via train from Beijing on Friday (Nov. 1). The touchdown target for the Chang'e 3 mission - a lander and a lunar rover - is thought to be Sinus Iridum, known as the Bay of Rainbows, a plain of basaltic lava on the moon, according to reports by China media outlets. An earlier Chinese lunar orbiter, Chang'e 2, eyed the moon-landing zone in 2010, showing the site's flat topography and other interesting features. As for the rover's name, that is to be decided next month, based on nearly 190,000 entries on two China-based websites. According to the Beijing Times, Yutu (jade hare in Chinese) leads the list, while Tansuo (explore) and Lanyue (catch moon), are the second and third choices, respectively. Launch day China space watcher Bob Christy of the informative website Zarya.info told SPACE.com that his best estimate for a China lunar launch is Dec. 1. It could be a day or so later, but is unlikely to be earlier, he said. Christy has taken a look at the launch windows. For Dec. 1, the optimum launch time is around 14:00 to 15:00 UTC (9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. EST), he said. It allows Chang'e to approach the moon from the north to give a better view of the transfer orbit from China than would the alternative - around 22:00 UTC (5:00 p.m. EST) for an approach from the south. Sunrise over Sinus Iridum commences Dec. 14, Christy added, so landing will probably be a day or so later to ensure enough light. I have a Chinese document that says Chang'e will spend about 10 days in orbit before landing. Transit time is likely to be 4.6 days - so it points to Dec. 1 for launch, he said. As for why China chose Sinus Iridum for the landing site, David Kring, senior staff scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, has some ideas. In an informal briefing document provided to SPACE.com, Kring showed the scientific advantages of selecting that region. But he also said that other factors may also have affected the landing site choice. For example, China might be factoring in thoughts of returning lunar samples back to China in the future. Relatively little oomph is needed to rocket samples back to Earth from the Sinus Iridum region, Kring told SPACE.com Sinus Iridum is an impact crater, measuring roughly 146 miles (235 kilometers) across, that was later flooded by basaltic lavas. It is located along the northwestern edge of the Imbrium basin. In 1970, the then-Soviet Union's Luna 17 spacecraft landed nearby, dispatching the Lunokhod 1 moon rover, Kring said. Rover tools According to Kring's informal report, which draws from various Chinese sources, the solar-powered Chang'e 3 rover carries nearly 45 lbs. (20 kilograms) of payload and has a 6-mile (10 km) range after departing the lander. The six-wheeled robot sports navigation and panoramic cameras. The lower front portion of the rover carries hazard-avoidance cameras. The rover will hibernate at night and might survive three lunar nights (three Earth months). The rover totes a robotic arm with an Alpha-Proton X-ray Spectrometer, or APXS. That APXS tool could, among other duties, study recent impact crater material that's been tossed out and about, revealing the material below the moon's surface; look at ejected debris in crater rays and/or in secondary craters; and help researchers develop a better model for impact cratering processes, Kring said. The Chinese rover also appears to be outfitted with a ground-penetrating radar instrument. If so, that device can test models for regolith thickness, including rock abundances inferred from orbiting radar experiments, like the Diviner lunar radiometer experiment on NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Also, China's rover could demonstrate the utility of ground-penetrating radar to advance future exploration of the moon, Kring said. In Kring's review, the Sinus Iridum mare basalt has modest titanium-ore content, except near its southeastern margin, where it has very high titanium-ore content. Wait-and-see observations One interesting side story involves NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE), which recently entered orbit around the moon. Whether the LADEE spacecraft could detect certain activities of China's Chang'e 3 mission is worth contemplating, according to SPACE.com contacts familiar with LADEE operations.
