[meteorite-list] A Rare Arizona Meteorite Find plus a NEW New Mexico strewnfield
Hi Bernd, Thanks for the comments. We do have reservations about if it really has a chondrule or if it is just a round inclusion. However, some of the most knowledgeable people in the world have guessed high metal diogenite (as it is loaded with metal) or lodrinite or other primitive achondrite- Ureilite maybe? My guess is that it will be an achondrite - maybe a new class? However, if it is a chondrite it will be anything but ordinary - maybe a new class here too? Hi Graham, I agree and infact at first thought it was a pallasite/meso when I first saw it because of all the olivine on the exterior (a visible 8mm chunk). I forgot to mention that my rare find was (it's cut now) a complete stone weighing 157 grams. It has large olivine on the exterior (up to 8mm) and lots of metal. what is it? Hi Bernd and Greg, It is so strange that is for sure. I don't know what it is but it has about the same metal as an H chondrite and the olivine of a diogenite but the (possible) chondrule of a lodranite. I found what is probably a very rare achondrite meteorite. I say probably because no one can definitively say what type it is just by looking. It is currently being classified at ASU by Lawrence Garvie – so we will soon know. Here is a link http://www.mr-meteorite.net/ararearizonafind.htm This past weekend – in an attempt to find more - I put together a team of top notch meteorite hunters (Mike Miller, Sonny Clary, Stan Wall, Del Waterbury, Mike Morgan and Myself). Unfortunately, between the rains and mud we came up empty. After checking the weather (online) with a very helpful Susan Morrison we decided that in order to get out of the rain we needed to head east. Within a sort time we found ourselves in an area in New Mexico where no finds have been recorded. We hunted for an hour or two when I spotted Mike Morgan and Del examining a stone. Sure enough Del had found his first cold find and it was a very fresh looking meteorite! Mike Morgan was next to find one and then shortly after I did too. We think this may prove to be a “NEW” and very fresh New Mexico Strewn field. Time will tell as we return to hunt for more of these beautifully crusted specimens in the weeks to come. [meteorite-list] Need Video Graphics help ( for video project)
Hi all, I'm entering a film contest and may need some help with video graphics. The short film is going to be a positive look at what meteorite hunters do and how they can positively effect science and possibly the world. For example - documenting finds, mapping strewn fields, and donating samples for study can help scientists determine how meteors break up in the atmosphere. Fresh falls are probably best for this since when we find a fresh meteorite we can be pretty sure that's where it landed. Which type of meteor has a better chance of burning up and which type may have to be intercepted could be very important IF (or should I say when) we spot a giant asteroid that is on a collision course to earth. It's not too uncommon for a meteorite hunter to find a meteorite that was in space only hours before. Therefore, I like to think of us (in some small way) as taking part in the space program. Anyone interested in helping with a video graphic of a meteor as it heads toward earth please contact me. Or if someone knows of a place to purchase such video stock also please let me know. This is a fun film project and doesn't need to be perfect (or too serious) so just about any decent graphic that is about 15 seconds long will be fine. Richard Norton passed away last week, after a long illness. I had known fot quite some time that Richard was in poor health, still the news of his death came as a shock. Last time I called Dorothy, I heard piano playing in the background, Chopin and very good, I thought it was a CD playing or the radio, but Dorothy told me it was Richard, and we stopped a moment to listen, it was beautiful, I had no idea Richard was such a virtuoso. I had met Richard and Dorothy several years ago in Tucson, Thanks to Twink. I was very much a new comer then , and I found Richard to be bright, friendly, funny and so approchable. Best regards, MikeG On 5/27/09, meteorh...@aol.com meteorh...@aol.com wrote: Bernd and all, I just sold a little piece of Murchison today on Ebay. Just another day in the life of a meteorite dealer. However, this very rock (like many of the other meteorites we have) is often mentioned as being 4.56 Billion years old. One human life might make it 100 years. Richard's didn't make it nearly that far. Thus Murchison is over 45,600,000 human life spans old. That is about the same ratio as there are number of seconds in one year; 31,536,000:1 Days like today remind us that we are all only temporary curators of the meteorites we briefly possess. Even the oldest of our great collecting institutions have barely held their collections for more than two centuries. Thus, even our so called permanent collections have only held these treasures for 1/22,800,000 of their existence. Life is just a flicker in comparison. Richard was a great example to all of us that we have an obligation to make our impact on our world while we each have a chance. And his early passing is a reminder to the rest of us that we need to take time occasionally to stop and appreciate each other's contributions along the way. Richard himself was an example of both those things we are reminded of. Brend brought up for us today of what Richard wrote in a METEORITE article in 2001: NORTON O.R. (2001) Centerpiece: Kapoeta - A Howardite Extraordinaire (Meteorite, May 2001, Vol. 7, No. 2, pp. 22-24): I knew it was different when I first laid eyes on it. During the 2000 Tucson show Steve Arnold was selling thin sections from the Elbert A. King collection. One in particular from the Kapoeta howardite caught my attention. Even without magni- fication I could see a clast-like feature with a structure I had not seen before in any meteorite, much less in a howardite. Above, in just one simple sentence, Richard was extending credit out not just to me, but to Dr. King and even to the collecting community at large via the Tucson Show. He didn't have to include that sentence at all in that paragraph, but he did. In a gentlemanly way, he was recognizing others' contributions to his amazing discovery he was writing about. Of course virtually all of Richard's books (and other writings) extended credit and recognition to others as well, in many different ways. Maybe in honor of Richard's contribution into all of our lives, over the next 31,536,000 seconds, we can all try to take just one step closer to being more like Richard. If we do, this list, the meteorite community, and the world in general will be a much nicer place to hang out. I am going to start: I want to extend an genuine thanks to everyone that makes positive contributions on this list. One of my friends in a private correspondence today mentioned in reference to Richards passing that it was very sad to have lost one of the good guys. In spite of some riff-raff that shows up here on the list occasionally, we do have some really good guys (and gals) here on the list. Thanks to all of you good guys for contributing and making a difference! Steve Arnold

I've talked about a meteorite hall of fame for some tme and even brought it up to the gang (Notkin, Arnold, Miller, Wesel, Philips etc...) in Texas. It is a IAB-MG (Main Group), coarse ochtahedrite and is named Ocate after the nearest town to where it was found. It will be in the online database soon and will be published in MB96 (Sept, issue MaPS). It wasn't until 2008 that they finder approached me with the single 6.4kg stone that the classification process began. I went to the find site last fall with the person who found it to take GPS coordinates, photograph the area and to hunt for more if there were any to be found. We didn't have much time to hunt at that time so we did not find any others. Here are a couple of links to give you an idea of how nice Ocate is (see all available specimens below classification below). This was cut and prepared by one of the best meteorite craftsman in the business! Polished and etched face of a 314g complete slice: http://www.lunarrock.com/ocate/specimens/dsc2.jpg Ocate, New Mexico sign: http://www.lunarrock.com/ocate/OcateSign.jpg The find site of the 6.4kg Ocate iron: http://www.lunarrock.com/ocate/findsite.jpg Getting to the find site is treacherous and a 4-wheel drive vehicle with high clearance is required! It took us about three hours after leaving the paved road to get to the site up the mountain on a road that was more like a crater-ridden trail with large boulders in most places and swampy mud in others. To successfully hunt the site would require camping for a week, there is no way to drive up and down the mountain each day and get enough hunting hours in to make it worthwhile. There are also lots of elk hunters during hunting season so anyone who wants to give it a go, be careful! Submitted and approved classification for Ocate: Ocate 36° 17.72' N, 105° 2.90' W Mora County, New Mexico Find: 1986 Iron (IAB-MG), coarse octahedrite History: This single 6.4kg mass was found by a local New Mexico hunter in 1986. Knowing it was different from the surrounding rocks and had an odd appearance (the face of a bear), the hunter took it home and set it aside with an odd assortment of 'collectibles' while hunting and mountaineering over decades in the New Mexico area. The owner contacted G. Hupe in May 2008 for verification of the find, which was confirmed by study of the type sample at the University of Alberta. Physical characteristics: A single stone weighing 6402 grams with virtually no apparent fusion crust, yet also lacking progressed terrestrial alteration, which contributes towards its dark brown metallic appearance with well defined regmaglypts. Petrography: (C. Herd, N. Bruemmer, UAb) A 5 x 7 cm polished and etched slab reveals Widmanstätten pattern with an average bandwidth of 1.4 ± 0.2 mm, few areas of plessite, and numerous inclusions. A 1 cm ellipsoidal graphite nodule and several smaller inclusions of graphite, troilite and schreibersite are associated with polygonal kamacite on one portion of the slab. Smaller, mm-scale elongate inclusions of troilite are oriented parallel to kamacite lamellae where the Widmanstätten is better developed. Terrestrial oxides decorate fractures within a few mm of the exterior surface. Geochemistry: Bulk Composition: INAA data (J. Duke, UAb): Ni = 6.99 ± 0.05 wt%, Co = 0.466 ± 0.004 wt%, Ga = 71.9 ± 0.3 μg/g, Ge = 271 ± 6 μg/g, Ir = 2.25 ± 0.04 μg/g, Au = 1.60 ± 0.03 μg/g, As = 15.2 ± 0.3 μg/g, Cu = 119 ± 11 μg/g, W = 0.87 ± 0.08 μg/g, Re = 0.22 ± 0.02 μg/g (uncertainties 1s, 68% confidence level). Classification: Iron meteorite, IAB main group, coarse octahedrite, minimal shock, minimal weathering. Type specimens: 97.58 g slab and a 3.2 g interior piece, UAb, main mass, G. Hupe. I have only 12 specimens out of 15 that are available, here is the list which also shows the thickness of each piece: Ocate, New Mexico IAB-MG iron meteorite 910g end cut http://www.lunarrock.com/ocate/specimens/nm910a.jpg http://www.lunarrock.com/ocate/specimens/nm910b.jpg 322.6g cs 4mm thick http://www.lunarrock.com/ocate/specimens/dsc1.jpg 314g cs 4mm http://www.lunarrock.com/ocate/specimens/dsc2.jpg 211.6g cs 3.5mm http://www.lunarrock.com/ocate/specimens/dsc3.jpg 208.2g cs 4mm http://www.lunarrock.com/ocate/specimens/dsc4.jpg 191g cs 4mm http://www.lunarrock.com/ocate/specimens/dsc5.jpg 168.6g cs 2.5mm http://www.lunarrock.com/ocate/specimens/dsc6.jpg 163.8g cs 2.5mm http://www.lunarrock.com/ocate

Hi all, I agree completely with Darren! For the most part, I don't use the term Hammer when I sell one of my finds anyway. I'll use a description instead - This meteorite was found on a grave or hit a tree or yard. For those who've asked, my West meteorite found on a grave is not for sale as it was my very first West find. Let's say, for the sake of argument, hitting a poured concrete dam (like the Hoover) DOES make a hammer-- but hitting an earthen dam DOES NOT make a hammer. My 1st Post To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Date: Sunday, March 15, 2009, 8:18 AM Hello to all, I've tried to post on here over a year ago and couldn't get any thru. Thanks Steve Dunklee for the advice. My problem was different, but you inspired me to work on it again. gmail has a tab you must click to send messages as plain text. OK METEORITES. I probably got the bug the same way many of you did, watching a show with Robert Haag searching for the Tucson Meteorite. This was many years ago, and thanks a lot Robert if you read this. I hope your HAPPY! You've created a brand new Addiction all on your own! Soon after this I purchased O Richard Nortons book Rocks From Space. Great book, but guess what! I found out I lived only 5 miles from Richard and Dorthy Norton!. I found myself soon sitting at the kitchen table looking at thin sections with Richard, and learning all about chondrules, etc. What a treat!! He told me all about the field of meteoritics, and this pushed me over the edge. I have a serious problem when it comes to meteorites. I'm a bit of a freak I suppose,... I take meteorites with me wherever I go, I buy meteorites for less than their worth, more than their worth, give them to strangers, and pass them out at star parties to the children. I constantly think about all the different ways to include them in my life, process them, preserve them, make things from them, hunting for them, e-bay etc. Its a wonder I get anything done at all! Took a trip to Florida in 2003, went to Kennedy Space Center, and purchased my 1st meteorite. About 40 grams on Nantan crust for only $40!! How funny! I was ( and still am ) so happy to have my Nantan crust rust. ( No I don't want to buy any more @ $1 gram, but thanks ) I did go back in 2004 and buy another piece however. Oct, 2007 found me heading to Arizona, (I live in Bend Oregon) what a ride! I spent 4 month there hunting meteorites, and purchasing whenever possible. Made my 1st trip to meteor crater, UN believable experience! Met all the guys from Morocco, and purchased several kilo's NWA, a few kilos here a few kilos there. Spent most of my time in Quartzsite working (I have a mobile RV service business) and playing. In quartzsite I met a guy who many of you know I'm sure who brings us the Campo's. I spent nearly every spare moment working on, and discussing meteorite hunting, preservation, future searches for the Esquel Palllasite etc. and a BBQ almost every night. Ended up with Campo's running out my ears! Then my new friend had to go to Tucson,... how sad I had to stay and work. Well he called me several times from there, and made several nice purchases for me, some of these were purchased from list members. #1 I got the nice big Brenham slice, with the L.A. Times newspaper, thanks Steve Arnold, I love it! #2 I got a big 12 kilo complete oriented chondrite, I think it came from Mohammad, but not sure #3 I got a 1 kilo Seymchan, and small 40 gram slice from one of you guys. and several other smaller pieces, thanks everyone. I vowed to make it to Tucson in 2009. I kept that vow...WOW! Even before I went, I had the pleasure to meet Ruben in Quartzsite, and be in one of his videos. Oh yea! I forgot, I found a 40 plus gram chondrite in the Quartzsite area. My 1st find, I GPS the coordinates, and photo in situ, etc. My friend Mark and I had walked for a hundred miles before we found it. How cool it wasand Ruben videoed it with his new HD camera, and stuck it on You Tube. SO COOL, thanks Ruben! Then Tucson: Oh boy..the post is getting long, sorry so exited to post.be calm, breath...OK 1st stop, the Ramada, and got 8 kilo chondrites from a nice boy from Morocco for REALLY cheap! then to the Days Inn and found my Campo connection, visited a bit, then Steve Arnold walked up and I got to meet him! Almost peed my pants! Then got oriented, found a place to park for the day, and headed to Inn Suites. Here I met Marvin Kilgore, ( again nearly peed) what a nice guy! purchased his book, and talked meteorites for an hour or so, met his nice wife Kitty and got some pictures. thanks Marvin and Kitty. Then met Bruno Fectay and Corine Bidaut, SUPER nice people. Checked out their Mars rock Chassignite, nice..and took their picture! Thanks

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Finding Dog in West Texas
Hi all. I'm heading home in the morning with a bag full of meteorites. Ok, it's a small bag but I'm happy. I got 6 complete individuals and a fractured specimen. I interviewed some of the locals as well as hunters and should have at least a couple of good stories/videos! I'm not sure (nor is anyone else) why the dog decided to pick up the meteorite. However, the owners gladly wrote out a nice little story about how it happened and for everyone dying to know, the meteorite found by the dog was purchased by my friend Rob Wessel. We (Doug Dawn, Dmitry Sadilenko, Sergey Petukov) drove across the country and estimated the location of the strewn field within 48 hours of the event. With a bit of tenacity, scarcely four hours after the second day, thanks to the help of some Texas-sized hospitality, we arrived in the strewn field and found our first couple of stones and I had the distinct pleasure of shaking the finders hand and removing any lingering doubts in his mind that he had meteorites fresh from Heaven's farm. After the initial success, my good friend and asteroidhunter, Rob Matson of Los Angeles, joined up with the team. We have found some stones, but more are being found by others, and we really expect larger masses to be found, though hard work in the field definitely gets you wondering if just because such a meteoritical spectacle drops one stone, should it drop the thousands we keep expecting to see? The TKW is rapidly evolving, but the area is being hit quite hard by hunters already. This doesn't seem to be a dense fall, and some areas are very easy to search, though bramble in other areas effectively keeps those off limits. All land is private and most families keep their gun collections well oiled. In our case, the big-hearts of the landowners have humbled easily as much as the witness reports of the bolide's fragmenting itself. This is at odds with some other reports, only because residents of the area treasure their privacy and were completely overwhelmed by the wave of treasure hunters that descended. We almost lost our permission to hunt when they believed that we were somehow responsible for several meteorite hunters showing up with a news crews. Besides being quite busy, I promised to respect the anonymity of our hosts as a condition of our search, and this evening we reaped the benefits of a delicious home-cooked dinner prepared by the caring hands of our hosts at their dinner table. There is a great Texas steakhouse on I-35 which adds to the flavor for anyone wanting to experience Texas culture, cowboys and pretty cowgirls from West, TX. It has been an incredible last few days, which started by being the first to walk in a virgin strewn field, though my mother had some problems (she seems better now) that have somewhat muted what will undoubtedly be some of the most memorable moments of my life. It is way past bedtime and I will post more tomorrow. The meteorite itself is moderately to highly shocked and has a very bright, light, interior and veins of troilite and nodules of metal, and the majority of stones found are fully fusion crusted. More on the classification on Saturday. We certainly were not in a mass-laden portion of the strewn field, other hunters please take note; more likely just a place where a minor fragmentation impacted. In any case, we are committed to getting

Re: [meteorite-list] Texas meteorite find ...possible hoax.
Hey Sonny, Ask Mike Miller as both he and I have cut lots of this stuff - from the picture - I can say it is almost certainly old Campo. That blurred etch look comes from the extreme weathering of old campo. I've never seen another meteorite that looks the same. A few years ago we both bought the same sort of stuff as toluca. The seller was sure we'd never know the difference...we did and returned it for a refund. Besides Steve and I are working on cleaning out all the meteorites in Nevadalol Ruben Garcia Phoenix, Arizona http://www.mr-meteorite.com http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=meteorfrightp=v --- On Sat, 8/23/08, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [meteorite-list] Texas meteorite find ...possible hoax. To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Date: Saturday, August 23, 2008, 1:26 PM Hi All, I recently answered an ad regarding a meteorite for sale that was found in Texas. I have included a portion of the email below. Thanks for your reply on the meteor. Here are some additional details on it: I am an amateur fossil hunter and I was searching a river-bed in central Texas, outside This river bed I was searching within is the Lower Cretaceous- Glen Rose formation, well known for its ammonites, grastropods and other shell fossils. It is a soft to hard limestone group and is stratified into various layers. There are no known layers of metals such as irons, ingenious or other metamorphic type minerals within this outcrop of Texas. During my hunt I ran across a dark, rust colored stone sticking outside of the side bank at about two feet above my head. Was very much out of place as this was a tan-light brown colored limestone layer. Started to pull it out, but had to pick it out. It was very heavy and was rusted. Was pretty excited about it and had my suspension it was a meteor. Researched on the subject and ran a few objective analyses on it. It is highly magnetic, has nickle content, shows fusion crust, one spot has very bright silver underneath the rusting and weighs in at 14.2 lbs. Consulted a couple of Geo-Techs and they agree it is a meteor. I have attached photos of the ammonites I found within the same layer to give you an idea of the type of limestone and fossils found in that formation. After a lengthy phone conversation I agreed to his asking price. With the agreement; before his receiving payment I would request to cut and etch a small slice of the suspected meteorite. From the pictures it looked very much like a weathered Campo or Nantan. I expressed my concern that many of the Iron meteorites that are turning up today for sale are meteorites that were purchased and being misrepresented as a new find. Also it would be tough to find anyone to classify it if it resembled a Campo or Nantan .The finder assured me that this was a new find and another small piece was found above this location that resembled the meteorite. I thought to myself this can't be true, I better call up my hunting partner and reserve plane tickets now before Steve Arnold or Ruben find out! Just kidding ! This is when things started to get strange. The finder called a few times expressing concerns about the value of the meteorite, increased interest from potential buyers, etc. I was also forwarded a email from a person wanting to purchase the meteorite. The strange thing about the email it sounded like my previous phone call with the finder but the name was different and now the person expressing concern about the meteorite was working with a large University in meteorite studies. At this point I was starting to doubt any of this was true . I decided to contact the University and was surprised to find out that they never had worked with or heard of this person. I still thought that this could be true and waited for the meteorite to arrive ! I received a phone call from the finder the day before the meteorite was to arrive expressing ebay prices and possibly not wanting to sell the meteorite . From the prices on Ebay this could be worth thousands of dollars! Yeh right! Finding someone to classify it and all the time involved, you could make Millions! When I opened the box I could see rust fragments inside the bag that was protecting the meteorite. Still anything is possible! Lying in a limestone formation for millions of yeras that was once the bottom of the ocean. I wonder if that deep sea fishing pole I dropped over the side of the boat last year will last that long? After cutting and etching the meteorite. it appears to be a Coarse Octahedrite with silicate inclusions. I really can not prove that he did not find this meteorite or if it is a Campo or Nantan. The purpose of this post is to help anyone who may come across this meteorite. I placed a few

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Article in Sky Telescope Magazine and in Meteorite, Aug 2008,
Thanks Guys, The Meteorite Magazine article was fun to do. I counted at least 25 people that participated (in one way or another) in this extraordinary event. Many notable list members are included, like Mike Miller, Robert Ward, Jim Smaller, John Wolfe, Billy and Tiffany Wetzel, Jim Shorten, Mike Morgan, Paul Desilets, Del Waterbury, Stan Santiago, Denny Asher, and many more!! I'm thinking of doing another similar article/video. It would be another group hunt; except for this one would be How to Hunt a Dry Lake Bed. I think it would be great to get 20-30 novices/pros out on a dry lake bed and see what happens! We'll see ... Just so everyone is clear on this, the upcoming- Oct 2008- Sky and Telescope article was coauthored by writer/photographer Geoff Notkin. His pictures turned out Amazing! I can’t wait to see the article either! Thanks again to Bob and Kelly ( S T Mag.) and Larry and Nancy (Meteorite Mag)who are always glad to publish my articles. Re: [meteorite-list] Ruben Garcia reports: Glorieta, not hunting allowed...
Hey Steve, You sound upset at me, though I'm not sure why. I had full permission from land owners for all of the above - Cash and Treasures, my videos, articles etc..- The and owners even allowed me to stay in their cabin while there. Does that sound like I trashed their area? I've never hunted on Federal property, I've covered all of my holes and never taken a quad to glorieta. So who are you talking about? Through the years we (meaning all successful hunters) have inspired others to become meteorite hunters. You inspired some yourself, including me! It happens. Did you think glorieta would be there for you and only you to hunt? I'm sorry it is shut down! But not for myself, I'm sorry for the land owners who got the shaft. I've spoken to them and they are not mad a me, but because of pressure from others they had to stop hunting all together. They were very good to all of us! Don, I don't want to and won't trash anyone - not even Steve. I like Steve! I don't know the answers to your questions for sure as I have never personally seen a quad there. Tracks yes, quads no. I've never seen Steve on TV either (regarding Glorieta that is) However, a very good article written by my friend Geoff Notkin was all about Steve's Glorieta escapades. It was because of that article that many of us started looking towards Glorieta. And what about all the information Steve put out on the web regarding Glorieta? I'm proud of my videos, articles, TV shows etc... I won't apologize for that. All I'm saying is that many, many meteorite hunters have been there. Some have done articles, TV shows, and the like... Hi Michael and all, Michael Johnson asked: Anyone on the list know about Sky Telescope Mag. publishing an article on meteorite collecting in the October 2008 issue? Geoff Notkin and I have just recently completed a feature article for Sky and Telescope magazine. It will be fairly substantial - over 2000 words - and should be packed with incredible pictures of meteorites that only Geoff could take! The article will touch on many aspects of this great hobby - meteorite collecting, meteorite hunting, etc. Special thanks to Kelly Beatty and Robert Naeye from S T for extending the offer to write such an article. It was a pleasure and a privilege to be given the opportunity and we both appreciate it very much. S T has also allowed us to post meteorite related text, pictures and video on their website – which should be up in Sept. or Oct. The article should reach subscribers in late Aug, and I think it will hit newsstands in late Sept or early Oct. [meteorite-list] A question about Antarctica vs Alaska meteorite hunting.
Hi all, As most of you know I've been a professional meteorite hunter for years. However, my expertise is limited to the southwestern part of the United States. I know that many of you follow the work done in Antarctica a lot more closely than I do. I know that meteorites have been recovered there for over two decades and more recently in eastern Manitoba, Canada. All due to ancient glaciers and their movements. My questions are as follows: 1)Has anyone really searched for meteorites in other glacial areas such as Alaska? 2)Is there any reason to believe that meteorites wouldn't be found there? 3)Are the Alaskan glaciers old enough to sufficiently catch meteorites? I may be planning a trip there and would like any advice on the subject. To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thursday, July 24, 2008, 4:24 PM Hello Ruben Good question. What makes the recovery in Antarctica is a combination of rare processes and not just glaciers catching up meteorites. It takes a rare combination of bedrock, ice and wind to expose the meteorite fields in Antarctica. Meteorites falling into the main flow are likely lost forever. But if it falls along the edge of the field in a side lobe-- not in the main glacial flow--there is a chance it can be exposed again. Sometimes thousands of years later. The ice in the top portion of the lobe doesn't scour the bedrock and stir up rock fragments like the main flow does and has minimal inclusions of earth rock in the load carried by the ice. A lobe occurs near a bottleneck and is like a slow motion wave getting sloshed out of a bath tub-- being pushed out of the tub itself by the main flow and rising bedrock. When the lobe hits the valley rim-- a gentle slope or buried ridge-line, the ice is forced up and over it, exposing the ice to very high velocity and extremely dry winds. This action scours away the ice matrix --perhaps even sublimates some ice directly into water vapor. In any event, the ice is removed by wind action leaving the meteorites concentrated on the surface. Concentrated implies a placer deposit but in fact means that in fives and tens meteorites are exposed each season before the ice flows over the slope and they are reburied in ice unless recovered by the annual meteorite search teams. I believe that a few iron meteorites have been recovered in glacial moraines elsewhere but that is a different concentration mechanism and they certainly aren't separated out from the earth rock!. Active glaciers such as associated with caving icebergs carry whatever load they have inside them into the sea. Meteorites don't seem to survive long in moist frequent freeze thaw environments making finding stone meteorites remote. I don't know the circumstances of recent Canadian meteorites and couldn't say if they were related to glaciers. The environment in glacial fields is against stones but favors irons, IMHO, so long as the ice doesn't make icebergs but ends in annual moraine building piles of debris. This beautifully produced 288-page full color book is an absolute must for all meteorite enthusiasts, and completes a great trilogy on our favorite subject, alongside the Nortons' other two essential works: Rocks from Space, and The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Meteorites. Congratulations to Richard, and the late Lawrence Chitwood, and also to M-List member Dorothy Norton who was very involved with the work herself, contributing excellent scientific illustrations throughout, as well as editing and research. Dorothy just told me this morning that the initial printing has already sold out (!) so if you need a first edition snap it up quick wherever you can find it. On a personal note, I was thrilled by the invitation to contribute, in a very small way, to this important work by supplying meteorite photographs of specimens from the Oscar Monnig Collection, The Michael Farmer Meteorites Collection, and the Aerolite Meteorites Collection. Several other List members also contributed photos, and you'll enjoy seeing a number of familiar meteorite hunters faces in the In The Field chapter.
