Re: [meteorite-list] Political Ramblings and Collection Habits
Well, it certainly depends on WHEN you started collecting. I agree that the expensive pieces are dirt-cheap even today and were expensive some time ago, but the OC material has been cheaper last year. The bargains with pieces below $ 100 have certainly decreased. But if you have a lot to spend, you can get larger pieces very cheap. But I am still convinced that the gold rush is coming to an end... I have never considered my meteorite collection a financial investment. The opposite is true, ... my meteorite collection absorbs a lot of money. Its absolute (objective?) value would presently amount to several 10,000 dollars but if I ever intended to sell it, I would probably get no more than 1/3 this sum or even less (rule of thumb for stamps when I was a serious and passionate collector). Collectibles lose their inherent charm as soon as we see the money first like Uncle Scrooge does :-) That was also the case when I started selling some of my rarer stamps many years ago. [meteorite-list] Rocks from Space Picture of the Day Repository at meteoritegallery.com
Hi! From today on, SPACEROCKS INC.'s Rocks from Space Picture of the Day will be archived at http://www.meteoritegallery.com so that older pictures won't get lost due to the limited space on geocities (and as we have no bandwidth limit on our server, there will be no page not accessible due to bandwidth overuse). I am in the process of transfering the older pics to the gallery as well. The Meteorite Gallery now hosts over 130 pictures from meteorites, alphabetically sorted. They are all submitted by collectors. And once again a reminder to visit http://metsale.com, the new auction site for meteorites and nothing but meteorites. Currently, there are 5 auctions running (one ending within the next 8 hours), and I invite you to try to sell your items there. Until the end of the year, there are no fees for listing and no end of auction fees, so basically you can sell your meteorites for free. Those signing up get a $10 bonus towards all other feature fees. Within the next 10 days or so, the meteorite network will be complete and I will announce all sites to the public. I worked hard to provide excellent tools to the community - and it's up to you to use them to your advantage. Well, IMCA has made a call for a design for such a card lately, and I even submitted one to them. No answer, and nothing else on this matter :-( It seems to me that IMCA spends a lot of energy on the structuring of the management lately, and less on other things. And their communication towards the members is something they have to improve. One could have the impression now that IMCA acts like an elite circle and not like a representation of collectors. For example: Since I am member of IMCA, I haven't received a single mail to members about what is going on inside of IMCA. I have been contacted by individuals within IMCA, yes, on different matters I proposed and offered, but these were personal contacts. Would I have remained a silent member, I would know nothing about what IMCA is doing right now. [meteorite-list] Introducing metsale.com
I want to introduce my new site to the meteorite community: http://www.metsale.com This is a meteorite auction site like ebay - but with some nice advantages: - This site is for meteorite auctions only (including books, software, tools and storage items) - Metsale allows swap offers to be made in auctions. - it offers reserve price and buy it now, photos and more. - it offers a wider variety of auction lengths than ebay. - you can have a store front in there for free - with its own URL. - it completely runs under SSL to protect your input and data. - winning bidders can pay you directly through paypal. - you can offer a lot of other payment options - forget ebay listing fees: listing is free of charge, regardless of the starting price - forget unreasonable ebay fees AFTER the sale: just plain 2% of the transaction (instead of fixed amount plus up to 5% at ebay). - reserve price, buy it now are free for now. - additional features are priced WAY below ebay. - in the future, there will be a offline lister like turbo lister at ebay. And you get a $10 bonus towards all fees when you sign up, so you can experiment with all additional options. To summarize: Metsale.com is ideal for you if you want to put up some items for sale, since the regular listing costs you nothing. Just enter a description (with a easy to use editor), upload a pic, set the starting price and that's all. And when you make a sale, it costs you much less than on ebay. You can also have a storefront at NO cost (this feature will be activated later today). So I invite you all, sellers, buyers and traders, to sign up at metsale.com. Hi, as I have announced on the IMCA list, I am restructuring my public meteorite sites including worldofmeteorites.com). None of those is ready for release now, but there is one site you could help me with: http://www.meteoritegallery.com As you know, worldofmeteorites.com had a section for meteorite pictures. This section was very popular, even amongst people just interested in meteorites. I thought it was a great educational source, helping to bring new people to our hobby. So I thought that it would be a good idea to dedicate a complete domain to this effort. This is why I am building meteoritegallery.com. The site isn't public yet (it will be announced before christmas), but I am already looking for contributors. I thought long about a way how to make contributions easy. This is what I came up with: If you want to upload a meteorite pic from your collection, you click this link: http://www.meteoritegallery.com/gallery and register as a user. You will then be able to upload pictures to the upload folder. You will receive a mail with instructions on how to do that and how to describe the meteorite properly. When an upload has happened, the admins of the site receive a mail and will move your picture to the appropriate section of the gallery (if the naming and description is correct). So: Little work on the side of the uploaders :-) It would be nice if we have a number of pictures in the gallery before weg o public, and your help (vulgo your upload) is very much appreciated. Hi All, Actually Nick, ebay is totally different world than decade-old dealer listings. First of all, the posted prices are fixed whereas ebay is at the whims of the bidders who all have their own reasons for their bid amount. Second, most (but of course not all as some of you know about) of the dealer's stock is listed giving an indication of the type and sizes available at that point in time, with many much larger than the usual material on ebay. And third, there were many pieces of many rare meteorites offered through the years and the lists give a snapshot into the distribution of rare material over the years. It is really something to read through pricelists containing howardites, ureilites, carbonaceous chondrites, type 3s, eucrites, etc. and many of them are witnessed falls and none are NWAs or the like. Frankly, I think an ebay archive would be easy. Just build a progam to crawl the meteorite auctions after their completion and store the data in a searchable datab ase. The upfront time might be a touch high, but after that it would run forever with minimal tweaking. However, I suspect it might violate the ebay user agreement. Pelé Pierre-Marie said, why don't we create a catalog of meteorites with official rates (like you can find for stamps or coins) ? I am in favor of a modified version of this, It's a great idea and it works for other hobbies such as Coins, Stamps, Tokens and a bunch of others. And I am not. There is only one authority to determine the price of a meteorite: the market. Nobody else should be allow to do it. If I see something for a price that I like I will buy it. If I sell something it all depends on if the buyer likes the price or not. Take this for an example: A says the price for El Hammami should be 40c a gram. B says it should be $1. Who's right? And what about the quality of the piece? Who will take it into account? And how? And what about size? True: some items are sold too cheap and others bought for insane prices. But if you want to determine the value of an item, the internet is a good source. It's work, yes, but it pays. So I am all against regulating the prices of meteorites. Make a price list, with lowest, highest and average prices. Because of the broad dara base extreme prices will nivellate. It's a work of 1 week plus, but it will help you to save hundreds and thousands of bucks or vice versa your collection will grow faster than you could imagine. (Thomas Cave did a similar approach, unfortunately he used not enough dealers in my opinion and mixed his compilation with ebay prices.) Of course such a list does not reflect the quality of the specimens, small specks are remarkably more expensive than bulk specimens etc. but all in all it turned out for me to be extremely helpful in determinating trade values and in shut one's mouth, if someone has no ideas about pricing, but addresses to me in a offensive way, that my prices would be ways to expensive, as it's a special german attitude this year. Of course NWAs and desert meteorites may change in price very rapidely, especially such sensible material like Moon and others and in general most NWAs are dealt in US-ebay, but for classics with names such a list works perfectly. Ebay has not to be included, as there always happen accidents. A bad picture, a missing or wrong description, bad feedback, unconfortable payment methods, non-US-sellers and the result can be ridiculous low, as well as there are from time to time specimens horribly overpaid. Not to speak about the work to note all ebay results by hand without software. But, doesn't matter - in other collecting fields there won't be paid catalogue's prices neither and such a list gives you an excellent orientation. Just bid a fraction of the average price of a location and you will be on the save side. Also on fairs it will help you to haggle and to find some real bargains. (And you won't loose your face, as it happens, if you'll address to a dealer expressing undiscutable and ridicolous low price imaginations for a meteorite, you want to buy). Additionally you will get a sensation, which dealers in general are tending to ask high prices and which are all in all so cheap, that it's well worth to check their assortment frequently. And finally, if you are reselling meteorites to financiate your collection, you are able to estimate, which profit or loss is possible. When I started selling meteorites years ago, first I compiled such a list. Was very helpful (also I could see, what has sold best, when I made the list in the following years) in pricing to be competitive with others offerors. Unfortunately here in Germany the few collectors didn't get it, that I priced my material quite affordable and the Americans tend to buy somewhat more expensive at their home dealers as they often don't notice dealers from other countries, so that I finally would appreciate, if someone would compile such a list and would it put online, accessible for everyone. RE: [meteorite-list] Numbering Meteorites
I have written my own Access application to keep records of my meteorites. They are numbered in order of their aquisition, with a prefix for my collection. A part of them is on exhibition, a part is stored away. Those pieces stored away are put into zipbags with the inventory number, the name and weight written on the bag, just in case the database gets corupted :-). Those pieces on exhibition are put into boxes, with a sticker on the bottom of the box displaying the inventory number and the name. A second sticker on the box shows the name of the item. For each and every meteorite I add to my collection, I keep records of Inventory number, Name, weight, if it is an individual, partslice, fragment and so on, the visual quality of the piece, that date of purchase, the seller, the price and which status the piece is in (purchased, paid, in exhibition, in depot, for sale, sold). In addition, I have a picture of every specimen in the database. The collection database is matched with a general meteorite database for class, geographical data and so on. Information overkill? Maybe, but this way I can see which pieces belong to certain class, where pieces are, what I have to ask for when selling and much more. _ Best regards, Bernhard Rendelius Rems CEO RPGDot Network This outgoing mail has been virus-checked. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Peanut .. RE: [meteorite-list] Calculating a meteorite orbit
I think that books from Jean Meeus could serve you. They contain formulas to calculate orbits, planetary positions, eclipses, conjunctions and maybe calculations for meteorites as well. One thing to think about, though: the best you can say is where the meteorite entered the atmosphere, nothing more. Perturbances of the orbit are many with such a small body, and I would think that you cannot determine exact positions for more than a day or two back into the past. Even asteroids can't be calculated precisely with a formula for more than two or three orbits. After that, the miscalculations will be more than just a few arcseconds... _ Best regards, Bernhard Rendelius Rems CEO RPGDot Network This outgoing mail has been virus-checked. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Pierre-Marie PELE Sent: Thursday, September 23, 2004 3:19 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [meteorite-list] Calculating a meteorite orbit Hello, I'm searching for an Excel program or a document explaining how to determine the orbit of a meteorite fallen on earth according to the fact that we know the impact point, trajectory, altitude and speed, pictures of the bolide. RE: [meteorite-list] Sale - Howardite Blow Out
Michael (and others who have written to me in private), it's not making me sick that it's about money, it makes me sick that people do not stick to the rules (even dealers I trust don't stick to the simple rules anymore). Let me tell you this: I recently bought a somewhat larger slice of NWA 2019 from a respected dealer. I knew the TKW, I accepted the price and I expected that the piece I buy is from this TKW. It seems now that the NWA 2019 I bought isn't NWA 2019, but unclassified material that might quite possibly be paired to NWA 2019. Now, if this discussion wouldn't take place, I would believe I have so and so much from the TKW of NWA 2019. I would possibly resell it in the future as NWA 2019, adding to the confusion and unknowingly betraying my business partner. So, to all dealers out there: if you sell a meteorite as Meteorite A and it is just something that is possibly paired to A, I FEEL RIPPED OFF! And I don't like that feeling. Hi there, I am in the process of compiling a collection of small (1-7g) partslices to show off the different classes of meteorites (not all, but the not too rare ones) to the public. I was able to feed this exhibition object from my own collection with 97 pieces/classes, but I am lacking of two classes (I do have meteorites from both, but both are 200+ grams). I am asking list members for a donation of small partslices of these classes: H4/5 (not rare at all, any NWA 869 will do) and H4/6 (the only one I know is SHIRS 010, and I just have a 363g end cut, but no small piece). RE: RE: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Histories
FYI: when I send out an item to a customer, I always send out a preprinted info sheet which contains, amongst tips how to store and curate your meteorites, a paragraph about the importance of keeping records of them. Here's a (free) translation of this paragraph: Please keep a catalogue of your meteorites - nothing is more annoying than not to know which piece is which, where it comes from and what the significance of the specimen is. Number your meteorites in some way (adhesive stickers - or keep them in numbered boxes/bags), so they can always be associated with their data/history. It's for your own pleasure and safety, since a meteorite without the appropriate info is worth a lot less than a properly described specimen. Apart from that, it doesn't just loose value, it is lost for science as well. This info helps in two ways: it helps my customers to appreciate what they have got, and it helps them to understand that I care for what I sell (which could, in return for the info, help to turn them into return customers). _ Best regards, Bernhard Rendelius Rems CEO RPGDot Network This outgoing mail has been virus-checked. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of mark ford Sent: Tuesday, September 14, 2004 3:15 PM To: Meteorite List Subject: RE: RE: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Histories Great article! Why noone screaming that Bob CANT sell his black peas as Amgala, becouse Ambala is a NWA number from Dr No with TKW 15kg and amgala from Bob is material not include in this 15kg? Or maybe this working only for meteorites 100$/g and more and everything below this price is not worth to write long letters? Or only this is only law for Hupes meteorites ? Only If we have any rules then why they fit only to rare meteorites and for example I can sell ANYTHING as Nwa869 and noone will say anything ? Ofcourse there is also another case. Its a confidence and honesty of every dealer. For example me, If I know that THIS IS Gao then I sell it as Gao. RE: [meteorite-list] Enough is Enough, Now NWA 1877
What I do (I know it isn't a cure but will certainly help sometimes to keep track of the material I own): If I buy something, I record from whom I bought it. When I sell something, I record to whom I sell and add a letter to the sold piece, asking the new owner to keep a record about source and buyer (if he resells it) as well. I did so from the first piece I bought up to today. However, I do not pass on labels. I make my own when I resell. _ Best regards, Bernhard Rendelius Rems CEO RPGDot Network This outgoing mail has been virus-checked. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of mark ford Sent: Monday, September 13, 2004 4:38 PM To: Meteorite List Subject: RE: [meteorite-list] Enough is Enough, Now NWA 1877 Stephan said: snip ... What we need, is a standard meteorite record card with the history of the specimen on it, (and if the rock gets cut, the card gets copied and the new owner/info gets added to it). RE: [meteorite-list] NWA 1110 issues
Now, here's my point of view. If NWA 1110 is paired with NWA 1068 (and thus should be paired with NWA 1183 as well), I think it is fraudulent to call anything else but these 118g NWA 1110. But wait. Nothing should be called NWA 1110 then. I think that NWA 1110 should have been called NWA 1068 and those 118g should have been added to the TKW of 1068. The damage with NWA numbers has been done already. Noone kept track of that stuff, right? One find may have been sold under 5-8 NWA numbers. And nobody knows for sure. Another example for this mess is NWA 984, right? Every crumb officially and legally claimed to be NWA 1110 has been imaged, was authenticated by a scientist and submitted to the NomCom for approval. RE: [meteorite-list] Main mass of Oum Dreyga (Amgala) recovered !
Philippe, Adam, Mail exchanges like this one are one of the reasons why I stay away from buying new falls within the first few months. Only when the dust has settled, I feel comfortable enough to aquire a piece of this and that. The second reason, of course, is that material from new falls becomes cheaper when the frenzy has calmed down. Look at Pak Forest, look at Zag and look at New Orleans, for example. The mail exchange shows me a second thing: commercialization of meteorites has risks, not only for the dealers, but for buyers as well. This is in no way an accusation of one person/group or another - just my thoughts on how rough this business has become lately. _ Best regards, Bernhard Rendelius Rems CEO RPGDot Network This outgoing mail has been virus-checked. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of philippe thomas Sent: Friday, April 16, 2004 9:02 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Adam Hupe Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Main mass of Oum Dreyga (Amgala) recovered ! Dear Adam and List Members, I can quite believe that the main mass of this meteorite is weighing over 2.5 kg (If its the case, I ask to everybody to excuse me for the title of my first message) but I have never heard about this piece and nobody has shown a picture of it. I know, of course, that this meteorite (Oum Dreyga/Amgala) is already being studied at NAU, but as it often arrives, this meteorite will be analysed by several laboratories. I think that this is a good thing and that the comparison of different studies is always rich in learnings. Its sure that it is an H chondrite, the exact type will be determinated by the analyses. I cant believe that a professionnal can confuse a L chondrite with a H chondrite and a weathering grade 2 with a weathering grade 0. There is a lot of swindles in this stuff, and perhaps the ill-intentioned people would like to sell Zag pieces for pieces of the new fall. But again, its seems to me really improbable to confuse them. Zag meteorite looks really special and is recognizable at the first glance. Even the pieces recovered three or four years ago dont have the sight of a meteorite which is on Earth since few months. The one who has had the fortune to handle some meteorites which fell on Earth few times ago, known the « mint » appearance of them. This appearance cant be confused with the ones which had been exposed to weathering for some times. I have had the occasion to handle a nice piece of Ben Sour recovered 15 months after the fall. This piece was already affected by the desert varnish. Best Regards, Philippe Dear Phillip and List, The main mass is larger than 2.5 kilograms and Amgala is currently being studied at NAU which should release results soon. Three different type specimens have been submitted and it looks like it will classify as an H3.8 rare Polymict Breccia with exotic clasts. Be careful about find location as we reported the strewn field was between Amgala and Oum Dreyga the very first post we made on the subject. An unrelated L5, W2 black chondrite find was being mixed in at first skewing the strewn field results. Also some Zag is reappearing and being sold as Amgala confusing the issue even more if that is possible. After looking at several pieces of Amgala and Zag it is easy to tell them apart. Zag has some extremely dark lithologies, the crust is different and is a regolith breccia. Hope this helps clear up some confusion, The Hupe Collection - Original Message - From: philippe thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, April 15, 2004 11:46 AM Subject: [meteorite-list] Main mass of Oum Dreyga (Amgala) recovered ! Ok, I think that it is time to say something positive about Steve. I have had about 20 transactions with him over the last 8 months, and there was only one problem that was corrected by him pretty fast. Other than that, all bids I won were exactly what he offered (and some GREAT deals amongst them *g*). Well, having said that - I don't understand him in some aspects. Having no pics with most of his auctions is pretty - well, strange, but that's up to him, I think. Some auctions are priced ridicoulosly high, others unbelievably low - again: this is up to him :-). I don't think that Steve is ripping others off on purpose, sometimes one COULD think that he doesn't really know what he does. But hey, there are only a few professional traders - Steve is, like me, just a collector, I'd say. If Steve made a mistake, I am sure he will react and correct it. This caused our supplier to raise his prices to the point it was no longer attractive and we sent most of the material back. These statements have been made a couple times in the past and I have kept my mouth shut knowing Mike would respond. But as the other member of thuathe trip this time I decided to post the facts. Mike and I paid between $0.50 and $0.90 per gram to the villagers for their thuathe. We also bought several kilograms from Tony Ambrose for $2.00 per gram. We were told on numerous occasions by many unrelated sources that Tony was paying $0.10 per gram or less. Yes, we paid 5-10 times what Tony was paying. Yes, Tony was probably pissed he had to pay a fair price afterwards, but we left him a pile of money so he could afford to. There wasn't a single piece Mike and I bought from the villagers that we felt we paid too much for. I'd be happy to pay less, but I'd still pay the same prices again for those pieces. After expenses we felt $6-$8 per gram was a fair price and we have pretty much maintained those prices since. The only way we proceeded to destroy the market was to quench some of the demand. If your supplier shafted you by raising his prices then I suggest it was his greed not the fact Mike and I paid $0.50 more per gram in the field. Hopefully this will be the last we have to hear about our outrageous overpayment in the field and how we destroyed the market. -- Eric Olson ELKK Meteorites http://www.star-bits.com Dear Mike and List Members, This post is not intended to be argumentative but could be perceived by some as being so. We just want to make our position known in regards to the new fall and other issues that were brought up by Mike Farmer on his latest posts. Do not worry, our intentions are not to get involved in perpetual arguements on the List as this has proven to be most unproductive in the past. First of all Mike, you were not the first to report this new fall. Check with the University of Washington and NAU. A few List members have been aware that we were working on this fall for some time and can vouch for us, not that this is needed. I will not respond to your ridiculous accusations that we have a few samples and made all this up to scoop you. Time will show who is telling the truth and in very short order. We forgive you for accidentally stumbling onto this fall months after the fact. We are not too worried about you damaging the market this time with your share that only amounts to a few hundred grams after you divide it up with your investors. Secondly Mike, you were never the first to report any new fall that we are aware of. If your memory serves you correctly, and let the record show, that we were the first to submit samples of Bensour to the scientific community within 5 days of the fall. A month had elapsed before you recovered any Bensour, long after Dean Bessey, Rob Elliot and ourselves made it available to market. As a matter of fact, we even announced the name and classification before you made your supposed trip to Bensour. We never claimed we went to the Bensour region but you did. We told the NomCom to get the coordinates from you since you claimed to have been to this dangerous area but, of course, no coordinates were provided. This is the last piece of data needed to make Bensour an official fall. Step up to the plate and provide this most crucial data and impress us all. Another note, You destroyed the price of Bensour by selling it for less than your cost at $2.80 a gram just to get even with Bessey. When a well known collector asked for several kilograms at this
[meteorite-list] Help me solve a mystery - NWA mystery
Title: Nachricht Hi, app. 2 weeks ago, Steve Arnold (Illinois) sold a "mystery NWA" on ebay. This is the text that came with the auction (as often with Steve, no pic): "Up here for auction is a mystery. This is a 134.9 gram whole stone that has been cut by AL LANG.It is a unclassified NWA mystery stone.I had bob haag, richard norton,al lang,ed thompson, blaine reed, and a few others give thier opinion on what it might be.No one knows. It has a very rich dark brown matrix.Very few or none at all with chondrules.High in metal, but it pulls very weakly even with a strong magnet. You can be the lucky winner of this mystery stone and you can try and get it classified. It measures 6.5 cm x 5.2 cm x 3.8 cm.I will start the bidding at $1.00. Good luck." Well, I bidded and won the item. Today it arrived. I had a closer look at it, took some photographs and am looking for your expertise now. Let me describe the tactile impressions: The item is feels pretty cold when you hold it, and it has about the right weight for a meteorite of this size. However: the outside feels quite "soft", more like an ordinary stone than a meteorite, like a pebble that has been in the water. There is indeed a lot of metal visible from the outside, but on the cut surface, the deeper you go inside, the less metal you find. A close examination with a 10x magnification showed no chondrules at all, at least for me. Here are three photos of the object (they are quite large in order to reveal more details). I have brightened the photos and added some contrast and some mild sharpening, but I'd say they are true to the visual appearance of the object: http://metcollector.rendelius.com/mystery1.jpg http://metcollector.rendelius.com/mystery2.jpg http://metcollector.rendelius.com/mystery3.jpg So - what's your impression? Is it a meteorite at all? What is it? Bernhard

RE: [meteorite-list] Astronomers Suggest Comet To Blame for 6th-Century 'Nuclear Winter'
I mean, do they offer some PROOF for their theory? A plume is nothing that would have gone unobserved by the eye (left alone a comet exploding in the sky) - and as much as I know, the mini ice age at that time wasn't a global occurence, but rather a european one - at least to my knowledge. There has been a second mini ice age around 1500 in Europe, and this is either attributed to the Maraunder solar minimum or the change of the gulf stream. Bernhard -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Ron Baalke Sent: Tuesday, February 03, 2004 5:39 PM To: Meteorite Mailing List Subject: [meteorite-list] Astronomers Suggest Comet To Blame for 6th-Century 'Nuclear Winter' Contact: Dr Derek Ward-Thompson [EMAIL PROTECTED] 029-2087-5314 Cardiff University February 3, 2004 Astronomers unravel a mystery of the Dark Ages Undergraduates' work blames comet for 6th-century nuclear winter Scientists at Cardiff University, UK, believe they have discovered the cause of crop failures and summer frosts some 1,500 years ago - a comet colliding with Earth. The team has been studying evidence from tree rings, which suggests that the Earth underwent a series of very cold summers around 536-540 AD, indicating an effect rather like a nuclear winter. The scientists in the School of Physics and Astronomy believe this was caused by a comet hitting the earth and exploding in the upper atmosphere. The debris from this giant explosion was such that it enveloped the earth in soot and ash, blocking out the sunlight and causing the very cold weather. This effect is known as a plume and is similar to that which was seen when comet Shoemaker-Levy-9 hit Jupiter in 1995. Historical references from this period - known as the Dark Ages - are sparse, but what records there are, tell of crop failures and summer frosts. The work was carried out by two Cardiff undergraduate students, Emma Rigby and Mel Symonds, as part of their student project work under the supervision of Dr Derek Ward-Thompson. Their findings are reported in the February issue of Astronomy and Geophysics, the in-house magazine of the Royal Astronomical Society. The surprising result of the new work is just how small a comet is needed to cause such dramatic effects. The scientists calculate that a comet not much more than half a kilometre across could cause a global nuclear winter effect. This is significantly smaller than was previously thought. Dr. Ward-Thompson said: One of the exciting aspects of this work is that we have re-classified the size of comet that represents a global threat. This work shows that even a comet of only half a kilometre in size could have global consequences. Previously nothing less than a kilometre across was counted as a global threat. If such an event happened again today, then once again a large fraction of the earth's population could face starvation. The comet impact caused crop failures and wide-spread starvation among the sixth century population. The timing coincides with the Justinian Plague, widely believed to be the first appearance of the Black Death in Europe. It is possible that the plague was so rampant and took hold so quickly because the population was already weakened by starvation. ### __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

RE: [meteorite-list] NWA meteorites - money for terrorism?
Title: Nachricht Let me elaborate a little on why I think this is a rather silly accusation and - most of all - rather humiliating to the people of the Mahgreb, where those meteorites are found: First of all: the quotations about militant groups from Algeria are TOTALLY taken out of context. Further on - the quote that theborder between Morocco and Algeria has been officiallyclosed in 1994 misses to say that "in reality, very little people care about that, mostly becauseof geographical circumstances". Next: there is NO known militant islamic group operating out of Libya, so these allegations are without foundation. You are right that there won't be "thousands of beduines" on the strewnfields - but what does it prove? In my opinion, it only provesthat - well, less people are needed for that job. Beduines are no fools or "primitives", their hunts are pretty well organized. I don'tdoubt you may have good intentions with this page (although some not so good intentions can be imagined for such a campaign as well) - but if you know the region a little, and if you know the people a little there, this page is something VERY objectionable - at least for me. Hehe. Personally, I think that this reboot-loop is caused by a short-circuit somewhere. BTW - one of the astonishing findings of ESA is that Mars seems to be much warmer than thought. They expected -120°C to -30°C, but instead they found the temperature is +4°C. I read somewhere that the orbit of Mars is much more changing over time than that of earth, and that Mars could have been much warmer a long time ago because of that. The Dutch Meteor Society (DMS) said the fireball probably took place somewhere above the Belgian-German border in Wallonia. It was seen in Limburg, eastern Belgium and Germany, Dutch news agency ANP reported. The Leiden-based DMS also said the fireball was most probably due to a meteorite and ruled out the possibility that it was a broken fragment of a satellite or a rocket. A society spokesman based the claim on information supplied by US aerospace agency Nasa. But a lack of hard and fast facts regarding the fireball means it is difficult to determine if fragments fell to earth. It is assumed that the meteorite burned up in the earth's atmosphere before hitting the ground. Dozens of sightings were lodged with star watch association Exploirion, based in the southern Dutch city of Heerlen, Besides sightings in Limburg, Belgium, Germany and even residents of the northern Dutch city of Groningen said they saw the spectacle. Meteorites usually burn up in the earth's atmosphere and Wednesday night's fireball was created about 60 to 100km above the earth's surface. German news agency DPA said the rock probably did not hit the earth's surface. A researcher with the European Space Agency (ESA) in Darmstadt, Germany, said the meteorite would have been about 10cm to 50cm in size. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

But aside from that, judging from their eBay ad text description, it appears that there are none of the standard descriptors nor expected phrases present in the ad that would lend credibility to their claim of having found a meteorite, with one exception which I will expand on below. Some descriptors and/or phrases that should be present in an ad that would help ensure authenticity are: * ... burned down the barn, the store, the outhouse, etc. * ... frightened- Mama, the horse, the goat, the pig, etc. * ... killed the cow, the dog, the mailman, etc. * ... too hot to touch for three days. * ... set the field, the woods, Charlie, etc., on fire. * ... glowed real bright green, red, blue, etc., all night. * ... melted the shovel, pick, car, cat, etc. * ... picked that little sucker up out of the bottom of the ten foot deep crater that it made. There are, of course, any number of other descriptor/phrases that lend virtually infallible authenticity to what would otherwise be 'questionable meteorites'. But the ones above will give a good start to novices unfamiliar with what to look for in the eBay ads. The one item in the eBay ad description that had a ring of truth to it was the mention that it was found only twenty minutes after falling. I can easily imagine the following scenario (you'll have to excuse me for not illustrating this with people from the towns of Palencia and León in Spain; I have to go with what I'm familiar with): Zeb and Luke are rocking on the front porch of their shack high in the Ozark mountains, in the cool of the evening, imbibing their nightly refreshment. NOTE: Setting not important- same thing can and does happen anywhere in the world. ZEB: Looky thar, Luke, a shootin' star! LUKE: Yep. Shore nuff, Zeb, 'nother one o' them rascals. RE: [meteorite-list] Stardust Flyby Images of Comet Wild 2
This is a layman's answer: A comet only looses substantial matter when close(r) to the sun. So yes, after some time he disintegrates, but this can take a long time, especially when he's big. Some comets' orbits are even disturbed in a way that they drop into the sun - they are gone then, naturally. _ Best regards, Bernhard Rendelius Rems CEO RPGDot Network This outgoing mail has been virus-checked. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, January 08, 2004 9:25 AM To: Sterling K. How does a small object like a comet, especially, travel for billions of years constantly venting and releasing matter continue to exist? Why doesn't it dissipate into virtual nothingness? Bill Kieskowski Hi, I was fascinated by the first flyby image that was released (the one featured on APOD). Despite its generally fuzzy appearance, there is a lot of detail buried in there that I hope we'll get to see when the wizards are through massaging the images for detail and content. I took a copy of that image and squeezed it as hard as I could. I doubled the spacing of all the pixels and filled in the intermediate spaces with eight-way median values, twiddled with its histogram to re-distribute the greyscale values to a more normal distribution, then stomped all over it with a square sharpness filter. I found that is LOTS of detail there, although my ham-handed efforts left some messy artifacts. For example, the crater-like circular features do not have uniformly shaded bottoms. They're not smooth (nor flat I would guess), but usually show a single deep dark conoid pit that's probably a large primary vent for outgassing. The walls of these crater-like features show some linear features, as if the depressions had formed by a slump-like collapse, perhaps from the rapid removal of material from beneath the slump by outgassing. Lots of tantalizing features not quite sharp enough to interpret. I'm left with the impression of a surface with lots of varying contours. Many of the smaller high contrast features seem to be albedo-related, as if between light and dark materials, perhaps at smaller un-slumped vents. If anyone's interested, you can view this roughly enhanced image at: http://www.bhil.com/~kelly/wild2.html. Sterling K. What do you all think? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2214206165 Thanks, Tom Peregrineflier __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Title: Nachricht Hour I open my mouth, Matteo. Of course you may sell your material for prices as irreal as you like. No problem with that. And if you get more for something than it is worth in the market, congratulations. The problem is another one: by stating that Shergotty sells for $16.000/g you may TRICK some newcomer into buying your stuff. That's not honest, and that's bad conduct in my opinion. Just my 2c. I had questioned where Shergotty is being sold for $16,000/gram; perhaps your reply to me got lost in the mail. ;-) Also, if Shergotty is indeed "normaly" sold for $16,000/gram, why do you suppose that the piece you listed as Shergotty below, got zero bids, and went unsold at $100/gram? [meteorite-list] Since last mail was lost...
The last mail was eaten by a cyberspace monster - so here it is once again: Dear list members, a happy New Year to all of you - and may this one be a peaceful and prosperous one. This mail is to inform you that I now have my complete collection online here: http://www.viennamet.com/modules.php?set_albumName=album01op=modloadna me=galleryfile=indexinclude=view_album.php It took my app. 3 days to photograph, upload and describe all 249 items that I have collected so far (remember, I am still a beginner with less than 7 months history in collecting, so don't expect a expensive and very complete collection). You might even find some pieces I bought from you :-). Enjoy :-) Bernhard __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
RE: [meteorite-list] Looking for Frederic Beroud
Yeah, NWA 1929 is VERY nice. I have a small slice of this recrystalized howardite, and you can see a photo here: http://www.viennamet.com/modules.php?set_albumName=album01id=nwa1929op =modloadname=galleryfile=indexinclude=view_photo.php The amazing thing is the matrix. Although the partslice is just 1.13g, it looks like it is three meteorites in one (and the photo doesn't even do justice to the REAL beauty of this small piece). However, all attempts to contact him at the email address on his own email and posted on the IMCA list are kicked back. Anyone know how to reach this fellow? (his IMCA # is 2491). Again, apologies to list members. PS: I will have some very interesting specimens to see already in my on line catalog shortly, including a HUGE super 12 Kg museum quality full slice of the highly brechiated Rio Limay, a beautiful full slice of a relatively new and spectacular Howardite, NWA 1929, ETC. RE: [meteorite-list] World of Meteorites - Status Report
Title: Nachricht Thanks, Mark, for your kind words. The site is growing nicely - for example, we now have 210+ different meteorites with pictures and descriptions in the Virtual Meteorite Museum (and I, for my part, have 100+ to add which aren't in there yet), and I think it's already a valuable visual resoruce for meteorite collectors. [meteorite-list] World of Meteorites - Status Report
Title: Nachricht This is the second last time I bother you with my project :-) We are nearly feature complete and ready for an official launch on 01/01/2004. This is what I can offer to the meteorite community (to be precise: what I can offer for the meteorite community to do themselves there): Announcements of ebay auctions and site sales News about classification and meteorites in general a forum for discussions a place where you can show off your collection a meteorite museum (it already has 140 entries) visual reports from expeditions (4 there already) visual reports from meteorite shows (2 online now) a gallery of meteowrongs banner advertising for meteorite sellers a calendar of events links to meteorite sites a place to post articles What will be added within the next few days: I will offer hosting for meteorite related sites, including installation of the gallery program we use A possibility to upload your collection catalogues and to share them with others So far, we have 59 members (membership is free) and app. 10.000 pageviews - it seems this portal is well accepted. What I am asking you for now: If you have a site, please place a link to http://www.worldofmeteorites.com on it. It will help us to get better rankings on search engines and in directories. If everything works out nicely, WoMet will do two things for you: bring more people to this great hobby and drive your sales and your ability to collect and exchange meteorites. It is nothing I do, because I only give you the tools (and you will notice that I do not, in any way, advertise my own sales there- it is NOT my site, it's yours and ours). It will be something You do. Ah, yes, and I am having GREAT fun doing all this :-) Bernhard
[meteorite-list] The ebay free day and the consequences
Title: Nachricht Hi there, ebay US had a day yesterday where people could put up things for free (no fees for putting things online). A lot of new meteorites were put up for sale - and the interesting thing is that most sellers (hello Mike *g*) tried something new: they put things up for prices you'd expect to see as end prices of the auction, or even above that. I am rather curious as to how this will work out. For my part, there are only two or three meteorites I would be interested in at the prices given, so success with me will be minimal *g* - but I can imagine that going out with prices higher than $0.01 is a good thing to try out, at least when failure will cost nothing. Interesting days ahead, at least for me :-) Bernhard
RE: [meteorite-list] auctions running
Hi Steve, Just a quick question: why don't you add photos of the items to the auctions? [meteorite-list] World of Meteorites - A Christmas Present
Title: Nachricht Hi :-) First of all: thank you to all who have already become a user at www.worldofmeteorites.com. I am still adding features to this portal, and one of it is my christmas present to you. I just opened the "Virtual Meteorite Museum" there. This is a gallery for meteorite pictures. But this one isn't just for looking. This one is for you :-) There are three sections: The Museum itself, the Field pics section and the personal section. Let me talk about the personal section first: In this section, you can create a folder for your private collection pics and then upload pictures to it. This is VERY easy, just via the web, and you can add comments to the pics as well as a caption. The folder can only be modified by you, so you can add, delete, change and do things as you like. And you can show off your collection to the world :-). The same is true for the field pics section: create a folder and upload pics from your expedition. The biggest part should be the Virtual Meteorite Museum. If you have a beautiful specimen, post it there. Over the time, we should be able to gather a lot of nice pics and this will really become a virtual museum. There is a naming convention I ask you to stick to: The Caption contains the Name of the item and its size, for example "NWA 812, 1,25g". The description should contain (in this order): Classification, date of fall/find, location of fall/find, TKW, additional info. If we stick to this convention, it will be very easy to browse the museum (people can search the museum by entering the name of the meteorite). This is all for free :-). I give you the tools, you add content :-). One more thing: look at thenewsbits I have posted on the site so far. These are examples, and you can do the same. You can announce your ebay auctions. You can post new classification data, you can post something about a new fall - whatever you like. Just use the "submit news" link and type away. Don't be afraid, I will edit the stories in the beginning if necessary. The nice thing about worldofmeteorites is that members can use the site as it were theirs. I firmly believe this portal will be a great tool for us, and I invite you to use it to your advantage. Thanks and have a nice day. Bernhard
