[meteorite-list] Re: Ad String

2004-11-10 Thread Steven Drummond
Hi List,
I am in favor of these adds on this list . As
long as one doesn't abuse the system , like posting the same add day after
day cramming their sales down our throats , I think most of the people on
this list are smart enough to know if they are interested in any given offer
without having to read about the same sale on a daily basis , and shoudn't
have to ! Just don't abuse the list that's all.
I have acquired some very nice pieces from these
sales posts to the list as well as sold a bit of material helping me to
recover funds paid to institutions for classifacations . In my mind
exchanging information like what is new and available is part of what this
list is all about,
Take that information away and where do you hear of the new material
available ? eBay and Pay Pal have enough of our money already ! And after
all , the list is made up of only people interested in meteorites to some
degree. Posting adds on the list can and does give the seller and the buyer
both a better deal (most of the time) .
And really , how hard is it to filter out these
adds if you are botherd by them or just delete them without reading them is
also another possibility :-)

Best Regards to all , Steven Drummond

[meteorite-list] Possible Sahara 03500 Paired stone

2004-06-23 Thread Steven Drummond

Hi List,

I was going to save this for later but here goes , I have what looks
like a paired stone to Michel Franco's Sahara 03500
 But this stone is somewhat
different as it shows clearly what looks like chondrules in the darker material.

Someone has stated that he thinks Michel's
stone is a huge clast, Michel's stone doesn't show any of this chondrule
material like my stone does, and if paired with Michel's stone could show the
reason why Michel has a problem with his classification . I am not going
to speculate any further on this one, I will leave it up to the Scientists if
they so choose to investigate this stone further.

 Anyway here is the
link to a huge picture of a 44 gram main mass of my stone that was originally 69
grams. Please excuse the crude web site.
Scroll down to the large picture

Hi list ,ThankYou

findings to the list (when they get them finalized) I could clear up allot of
stray pieces that need the final results.
 I appreciate this information
because as time goes on I forget who to ask for which meteorite awaiting final
results . We all know this can be quite some time in any case.

that seemed to get classified almost as fast as it hit the ground.

Hi List,I wrote a short poem on this subject (somewhat) some 8 or so

It's an obvious fact that we must believe
We have only one Earth and we can't leave
   Too many people everywhere
And all of us breathing our own foul air
The quality of life diminishes with time
As the people increase so does the crime.

Sad but true.

Right John, and if Phoenix doubles by 2017, then our
water troubles here in Arizona will be catstrophic.
No one seems to see what is going on. There are
places up here in the high county where soil
subsidence due to pumping from the aquifer are quite
profound. There are huge cracks that run for miles as
 the soil slumps.

And still the pumping goes on.

Look at our man made lakes. Lake Powell and Meade...
they are at disteriously low levels right now...

And Phoenix is going to double in the next 15 years?

 Back to meteorites.

Maybe a really big asteroid right now might just do
humanity and the earth a big favor.

(But hopefully one not so large as to wipe us all out)

Humm... If it were to happen in my lifetime, what is
left of it, I would be out in a lawn chair with a big
bottle of Jack Daniels, a big expensive cigar, and be
close enough to see the fireball, the blast, then be
 wiped away

It has been predicted that the Phoenix metro area

But, at least for the time being, I am taking a break. If the
economy
ever picks back up, and therefore my line of work, I am sure I will get
back
into it. Right now, it is just to depressing to be on the list, seeing all
the recent witnessed falls and great deals that come along, and can't take
advantage of them. I would like to thank all of you for your generosity
and
 helpfulness!

 Thanks, Tom

Re: [meteorite-list] Thuathe eBay - meteoritelab - Clarification

2003-03-30 Thread Steven Drummond

Hi List, I received my
first Thuathe specimen at the Tucson show and was the first to buy one of these
nice pieces from the Hupes'.About 1 month later I bought a nice oriented
individual from Mike Farmer . All I can say is both pieces are very nice ,
there is some dirt material in various places on BOTH of these meteorites that I
guess some people might think is rust , This is not the case . There is no
rust on either of my pieces . You can clean the dirt off but at the risk
of damaging the crust below if you don't have the proper equipment. If
water was used to clean the first specimen then why is there still dirt on it
?

  meteoritelab - Clarification

  Dear list members,

As many of you have seen, I have posted several
specimens of the Thuathe , Lesotho fall on eBay that Adam, myself and Alan
Lang introduced at the Tucson show. I have received several emails asking
about another dealer's comments that he heard that the material we received
had beensoaked in water. This is absolutely false! It was merely a
marketing ploy on his part to get sales. I have heard from customers who have
purchased from us and the others and commented that both specimens are EXACTLY
alike, same condition, etc. The only difference is that the specimens we have
listed do not have the finder's statements. Remember that these are still the
same material from the SAME fall.

My comment in the eBay description regarding a
woman "blessing" a stone with holy water does not refer to any of the
specimens we have on eBay. It is simply one of the many exciting stories about
the human interaction regarding the fall, similar to the many that have and
will come out of the Park Forest fall.

I have started them out at $4.00 per gram with a
"Buy it Now" at $6.00 per gram. I am merely passing on the savings we received
by being the first to receive these and were able to purchase them at a decent
price. What you see is what we have left for sale, we will be keeping anything
  else in our collection.

If anyone has any questions or comments, please
email me off list at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

  Thank you and best regards,

[meteorite-list] meteorite contest

2003-02-20 Thread Steven Drummond

Hi Mark And List.

Meteorites are cool because .

 Collecting them
has allowed me to meet many new friends I otherwise wouldn't have met , Going
placesaround the worldI thought I would never go (to see the various
shows) and if you are lucky ,searching for that latest fall . Much more
interesting than collecting coins , if you have one 1967 penny the other 1967
pennies are allexactly the same (except for errors or condition). But you
could have7 of the same find or fall and every one is unique in it's own
way. Much more interesting indeed.

Hi List, I was going to wait to do this but I
see that the list is getting frustrated with somebody's posts of terrestrial
samples so here goes.
 Check this link out
and guess the classification , I think you will find this is a real meteorite
that I cut a couple weeks ago, I have a few guesses already and would appreciate
anybody else giving their opinion on this material.
 Jeff Kyuken was nice
enough to donate the web space for all to see as I do not have a web site for
myself yet, Thank you Jeff.Click on this linkto see it.I
am going to see about having this meteorite classified and if I can I will post
the results on the list for all.

Humorous ... the bid is now up to $247.50 ...
The seller has newly changed ID; the seller
and one of the bidders buy gun stuff. One
bidder's feedback is both low and bad; the
other bidder has no feedback at all.

[meteorite-list] Fireball in Riverside calif.

2002-08-14 Thread Steven Drummond

Hi List, I was driving in
Riverside ( 10:40 PM ) south when I saw a fireball coming from the North East
moving towards the South East at about a 45 degree angle , I saw 1 very bright
fireball for about 2 seconds then it split into 2 fireballs flowing 1 after the
other less that 1 second after the split it went dark , it was still fairly high
when it went dark. I have seen shooting stars before but I have
never seen anything like this before, It seemed so close , I could not
believe it.but in reality it was probably farther away than I think.
I did not think to stop and listen for the explosion . as there was heavy road
work going on where I was, If I did hear anything I thought it was the
road workers.

Has anybody else seen this ? I am sure it must have hit somewhere unless
it went into the ocean.

[meteorite-list] faeton

2002-07-17 Thread Steven Drummond

Hi List, How can you advertise "Oldest
meteorite Faeton ? " And then in your description say it is made up
ofHALF carbon outside the earths origin. This would imply that it is no
meteorite at all . Please tell me what is this stuff ?
!!
It seems to me that it must be, If
Real, some kind of impact material ? It also says something about a
(CV3)Shunghit Deposit , I have never heard of a meteorite fall considered
a DEPOSIT .
 The auction #
2121347290 check it out 115 grams starting @ 9 dollars seems
like the price even tells me it isn't a meteorite.
 Can somebody tell me
what the heck this stuff really is ?

[meteorite-list] contest #3

2002-05-21 Thread Steven Drummond

Hi list ,

I am Bensour , Bensour I am.
I
landed in Bensour And not in Siam.

I fell from the sky with a thunderous crack

So beautiful And pristine with fusion crust so black.

Poked and proddedI would soon be.

As classification has started on me.

I turned out to be a very nice LL .

For dealers and collectors to study and sell.

So I am Bensour , Bensour I am.

I do not like the hot desert sand.

I do not like hitting rocks as I land

And I hope to be sitting soon in your hand.

Best Regards to all, Steven Drummond

2002-05-03 Thread Steven Drummond

Hello Mark And
list,"African Meteorites are cool
because." They have allowed me to have a nice collection that
otherwise I wouldn't be able to afford, and may have brought many new collectors
into this market like me.Also with a great variety
ofclassifications one can get quite a few different types .I
like my NWA's, and with the amount of different NWA's available it should keep
me busy for awhile !

Glad to hear you are feeling better Mark !!! Best

  CONTEST TWO! NWA's!

  Hello All,

Since I kinda ended the last contest maybe a
little early and I thought that was somewhat fun I have decided. Hey,
why not another contest? So without further wait

  "The free NWA meteorite lot
contest!"

Heres the deal. 20 free different numbered
NWA meteoritemicromounts (most unclassified) for the person that best
  finishes the following phrase...

  "African Meteorites are cool
  because."

I will set a time limit of 12 moon on the
5-6-2002 for this one. Answer is one or 1000 words I don't care.
I'll probley give a couple consilation prizes so who knows what I'll pull out
of the closet, but the prize will be 20 different NWA micromounts. And
yes many of them will be unclassified but hey, they are FREE for the winner
and it will be a great way for those with only a few meteorites to exspand
  their collection.

As alwaysbe sure to check out my eBay
  auctions while you are thinking.

Re: [meteorite-list] giving my Nantan a thrashing....

2002-03-31 Thread Steven Drummond

Hi Dave, I had a small Nantan, that I thought was complete shale , it was
about 3 inches by 4 inches and maybe 1 inch thick, I whacked it with a
hammer to knock off the shale and then over a 2 week period put it in a
special salt solution to remove the rest of the rust and amazingly enough
there was over half good metal left. it is layered metal , each day I would
have to use A STEEL wire brush on it to knock of the rust, eventually it
produced a clean free of rust piece . Then I heated this in the oven for 4
hours at 175 degrees , this turned it a little green ,then brushed the green
off with the wire brush ( Only use steel as a brass brush will transfer the
brass to the meteorite). then I used a light oil to help stabilize the piece
(WD-40). My ugly Nantan is now a nice metal color with no rust !

 Hi folks,
I thought I sent this to the list a few days ago but I don't recall seeing
it, so here it is again. My 1.5kg Nantan is, predictably, on the crumble.
If I were to give it a good whacking with a hammer to remove the shale,
would I be likely to find myself with 1.5kg of useless binworthy shale, or
would I find an iron 'nugget' in the middle of it all?
 Guesses please!!!

Re: [meteorite-list] big time jewellery!

2002-03-31 Thread Steven Drummond

Dave , I have a Gram Carat scale , I have a 100 gram weight that I use to
calibrate this scale, 100 grams is equal to 500 carats on my scale so I
guess that means the ratio would be 1 to 5 . Or 1 gram equals 5 carats, If
I am wrong somebody please correct me. And Happy Easter to all !!Steven

 Hullo.
Just been sent a mail from thaigem.com where they are having a big splash
on
meteorites as jewellery, kinda made me laugh when they refer to the
 stone's lustre.

Also they give the weights in carats how many carats to the gram?

Look it up if you can be bothered!
 very best - happy Easter

with that since the formation of the IMCA but just never got around to
it. I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any but be forewarned
that any ideas may or may not be used in the final decision.Excellent idea. We could have a
bunch of t-shirts or polo-shirts made using someting like 4 stars instead for
the 4 digit-number. And they could be made available to members only. We could
even make it a fund-raiser. I am sure most members would willingly pay a
couple $ above cost for the shirts and that extra could go in the Association
  account.
Personally, I like the idea of having a gold shirt with a copy
of the small logo. I also like the idea of having a plain white
t-shirt with a similiar logo on the front as well as a copy of the large
version on the back. I know there are places on the net that can
do custom shirts too. Sorry Rhett, gold does not look
good on everybody, unless you are talking about the metal :-)
I would vote for white or deep blue (like a night sky).
And I would much prefer one smallish logo on the front-left, and nothing
on the back. Any other opinions? Anne Black IMCA #2356

Hi , I noticed this also, But is it proper to cancel an auction minutes
before it is to end ? And in this auction it was minutes before it was to
end. I would be very upset if this happened to me if I were bidding ! It
makes me wonder ? An auction can be canceled at any time buy the seller ?

 All,

The eBay auction for the Vintage Meteorite Ball
 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=1083831262) was
removed
before it was complete. I don't know if I had anything to do with it, but
I sent e-mail to the seller and encouraged him to have it checked out.
This guy is _local_ to me (we both live in Columbus, Ohio), so I thought
he
would have no excuse to not have it looked over if I offered to do so. He
didn't reply, but he did remove the auction.
