[meteorite-list] Re: Ad String
Hi List, I am in favor of these adds on this list . As long as one doesn't abuse the system , like posting the same add day after day cramming their sales down our throats , I think most of the people on this list are smart enough to know if they are interested in any given offer without having to read about the same sale on a daily basis , and shoudn't have to ! Just don't abuse the list that's all. I have acquired some very nice pieces from these sales posts to the list as well as sold a bit of material helping me to recover funds paid to institutions for classifacations . In my mind exchanging information like what is new and available is part of what this list is all about, Take that information away and where do you hear of the new material available ? eBay and Pay Pal have enough of our money already ! And after all , the list is made up of only people interested in meteorites to some degree. Posting adds on the list can and does give the seller and the buyer both a better deal (most of the time) . And really , how hard is it to filter out these adds if you are botherd by them or just delete them without reading them is also another possibility :-) Best Regards to all , Steven Drummond __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Possible Sahara 03500 Paired stone
Hi List, I was going to save this for later but here goes , I have what looks like a paired stone to Michel Franco's Sahara 03500 But this stone is somewhat different as it shows clearly what looks like chondrules in the darker material. Someone has stated that he thinks Michel's stone is a huge clast, Michel's stone doesn't show any of this chondrule material like my stone does, and if paired with Michel's stone could show the reason why Michel has a problem with his classification . I am not going to speculate any further on this one, I will leave it up to the Scientists if they so choose to investigate this stone further. Anyway here is the link to a huge picture of a 44 gram main mass of my stone that was originally 69 grams. Please excuse the crude web site. Re: [meteorite-list] Wild Fire in Tucson
Hi List,I wrote a short poem on this subject (somewhat) some 8 or so years ago . Here goes.. It's an obvious fact that we must believe We have only one Earth and we can't leave Too many people everywhere And all of us breathing our own foul air The quality of life diminishes with time As the people increase so does the crime. Sad but true. Best Regards to all,Steven Drummond TUC :-) - Original Message - From: Steve Schoner [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: John Gwilliam [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Mark Miconi [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Dave [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: ari machiz [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, June 21, 2003 4:00 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Wild Fire in Tucson Right John, and if Phoenix doubles by 2017, then our water troubles here in Arizona will be catstrophic. No one seems to see what is going on. There are places up here in the high county where soil subsidence due to pumping from the aquifer are quite profound. There are huge cracks that run for miles as the soil slumps. And still the pumping goes on. Look at our man made lakes. Lake Powell and Meade... they are at disteriously low levels right now... And Phoenix is going to double in the next 15 years? Back to meteorites. Maybe a really big asteroid right now might just do humanity and the earth a big favor. (But hopefully one not so large as to wipe us all out) Humm... If it were to happen in my lifetime, what is left of it, I would be out in a lawn chair with a big bottle of Jack Daniels, a big expensive cigar, and be close enough to see the fireball, the blast, then be wiped away Steve Schoner/ams --- John Gwilliam [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: If you put three or four fish in a ten gallon aquarium, they will survive quite well without experiencing too many problems. Add three or four more fish to that same ten gallons of water and all sorts of problems like high nitrate levels and algae soon follow. Pretty soon, the water is so polluted that the fish start dying off. The many problems our planet is now experiencing is based on the same principle. Quite simply, there are too many people living in a limited amount of space. Over population causes disease, pollution, famine and reduces the quality of life for everyone and every thing that lives on Earth. It has been predicted that the Phoenix metro area will double in size by the year 2017. Land development eats up thousands of acres of farmland every year. Those acres that now contain concrete, buildings and freeways used to grow plants that produce oxygen. Yes, Phoenix will grow and some of the planners and developers will grow rich in the process. All this will be done with the same amount of water that we now have available. The over development problems in Southern California should have taught us all something important, but it seems no one is paying attention. So, what is the answer to the problem? Less people and less developement. Sorry about the soap box performance, John At 08:39 PM 6/20/03 -0700, Mark Miconi wrote: Actually Steve we are in a cycle. I just watched a show on Cox Channel 9 and this drought is just one of many that occur in cycles. Arizona has seen much worse droughts in the past. We are currently 60% through this cycle. Our wildfire problem is due to very poor forest management by humans who have traditionally tried to stop wildfires. Our forests have been saved from small fires for so long that they are no clogged with fuel that would have normally been cleaned up by small fires. Our tree density is way past what it should be for healthy forests. Global warming remains an issue for the Earth as a wholebut it has very little to do with what is happening here in Arizona. If you review the climate data for Arizona and this region of the US you will see a cyclic pattern that has existed since before the industrial waste was a problem. The west has had droughts thoughout time, just ask the native americans...the Anazazi probably suffered through many and finally succumb to an extended drought. The really pressing issue in this state is our water conservation. Arizona is the leading producer of Cotton in the USthat is stupid, cotton is one of the highest water consuming plants there is to produce any profit per acre. We have more golf courses in this state than most any state in the country, why? There are 68 more golf courses that have been approved to be built in Arizonaseems like alot of wasted water to me and I can not remember a single program involving a Golf Course that sends money into any community programs. Hi List, I received my first Thuathe specimen at the Tucson show and was the first to buy one of these nice pieces from the Hupes'.About 1 month later I bought a nice oriented individual from Mike Farmer . All I can say is both pieces are very nice , there is some dirt material in various places on BOTH of these meteorites that I guess some people might think is rust , This is not the case . There is no rust on either of my pieces . You can clean the dirt off but at the risk of damaging the crust below if you don't have the proper equipment. If water was used to clean the first specimen then why is there still dirt on it ? Best Regards, Steven Drummond "The Unknown Collector" :-) - Original Message - From: Adam Hupe To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, March 29, 2003 8:11 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Thuathe eBay - meteoritelab - Clarification Dear list members, As many of you have seen, I have posted several specimens of the Thuathe , Lesotho fall on eBay that Adam, myself and Alan Lang introduced at the Tucson show. I have received several emails asking about another dealer's comments that he heard that the material we received had beensoaked in water. This is absolutely false! It was merely a marketing ploy on his part to get sales. I have heard from customers who have purchased from us and the others and commented that both specimens are EXACTLY alike, same condition, etc. The only difference is that the specimens we have listed do not have the finder's statements. Remember that these are still the same material from the SAME fall. My comment in the eBay description regarding a woman "blessing" a stone with holy water does not refer to any of the specimens we have on eBay. It is simply one of the many exciting stories about the human interaction regarding the fall, similar to the many that have and will come out of the Park Forest fall. I have started them out at $4.00 per gram with a "Buy it Now" at $6.00 per gram. I am merely passing on the savings we received by being the first to receive these and were able to purchase them at a decent price. What you see is what we have left for sale, we will be keeping anything else in our collection. [meteorite-list] meteorite contest
Hi Mark And List. Meteorites are cool because . Collecting them has allowed me to meet many new friends I otherwise wouldn't have met , Going placesaround the worldI thought I would never go (to see the various shows) and if you are lucky ,searching for that latest fall . Much more interesting than collecting coins , if you have one 1967 penny the other 1967 pennies are allexactly the same (except for errors or condition). But you could have7 of the same find or fall and every one is unique in it's own way. Much more interesting indeed. Best Regards To All, Steven Drummond "The Unknown Collector" :-)

Hi List, I was going to wait to do this but I see that the list is getting frustrated with somebody's posts of terrestrial samples so here goes. Check this link out and guess the classification , I think you will find this is a real meteorite that I cut a couple weeks ago, I have a few guesses already and would appreciate anybody else giving their opinion on this material. Jeff Kyuken was nice enough to donate the web space for all to see as I do not have a web site for myself yet, Thank you Jeff.Click on this linkto see it.I am going to see about having this meteorite classified and if I can I will post the results on the list for all. http://www.meteoritesaustralia.com/oddsends/steven.html Thanks for your opinions , Best Regards to all . [meteorite-list] Fireball in Riverside calif.
Hi List, I was driving in Riverside ( 10:40 PM ) south when I saw a fireball coming from the North East moving towards the South East at about a 45 degree angle , I saw 1 very bright fireball for about 2 seconds then it split into 2 fireballs flowing 1 after the other less that 1 second after the split it went dark , it was still fairly high when it went dark. I have seen shooting stars before but I have never seen anything like this before, It seemed so close , I could not believe it.but in reality it was probably farther away than I think. I did not think to stop and listen for the explosion . as there was heavy road work going on where I was, If I did hear anything I thought it was the road workers. Has anybody else seen this ? I am sure it must have hit somewhere unless it went into the ocean. Best Regards To All , Steven Drummond "The Unknown Collector" :-)

Re: [meteorite-list] giving my Nantan a thrashing....
Hi Dave, I had a small Nantan, that I thought was complete shale , it was about 3 inches by 4 inches and maybe 1 inch thick, I whacked it with a hammer to knock off the shale and then over a 2 week period put it in a special salt solution to remove the rest of the rust and amazingly enough there was over half good metal left. it is layered metal , each day I would have to use A STEEL wire brush on it to knock of the rust, eventually it produced a clean free of rust piece . Then I heated this in the oven for 4 hours at 175 degrees , this turned it a little green ,then brushed the green off with the wire brush ( Only use steel as a brass brush will transfer the brass to the meteorite). then I used a light oil to help stabilize the piece (WD-40). My ugly Nantan is now a nice metal color with no rust ! We could have a bunch of t-shirts or polo-shirts made using someting like 4 stars instead for the 4 digit-number. And they could be made available to members only. We could even make it a fund-raiser. I am sure most members would willingly pay a couple $ above cost for the shirts and that extra could go in the Association account. Personally, I like the idea of having a gold shirt with a copy of the small logo. I also like the idea of having a plain white t-shirt with a similiar logo on the front as well as a copy of the large version on the back. I know there are places on the net that can do custom shirts too. Sorry Rhett, gold does not look good on everybody, unless you are talking about the metal :-) I would vote for white or deep blue (like a night sky). And I would much prefer one smallish logo on the front-left, and nothing on the back. Any other opinions? Anne Black IMCA #2356 www.IMPACTIKA.com e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo!
