 Alan, Matthias,

it will *definitely* happen on New Years Eve, at

Well, I admit that is what Rudolph told me one of these

I can´t watch it, so I won´t watch it, because of other

 Happy Birthday, Barwell!

Bernd (in Germany at 00.35 local time ;-)

 --

On December 24, 1965, a Christmas present of sorts fell to
 the ground around
16:20 hrs, when a brilliant fireball swept across southern
 England from a south
-southwesterly direction and landed in Barwell accompanied
 by a tremendous
explosion caused by the exploding meteorite that went down
 in history as the
 Christmas Eve meteorite.

The bolide must have been extremely bright. Some
 eyewitnesses say it was brighter
than the sun, others say it was almost twice as bright as
 Venus. There are also reports
of color changes during atmospheric descent.

Local residents noted a large explosion, the sky suddenly
lit up, a whizzing noise was
heard, there was a loud roar, a low rumbling noise, a
 screaming sound from a low-flying
object directly overhead, a loud rustling noise after the
 explosion, a sudden thud as
something hit the ground, a terrible crack, and also
 electrophonic phenomena.

When one local picked up a strange-looking stone about as
big as his hand, he immediately
threw it down again because it felt warm. This stone had
even left a small crater in the
 asphalt road.

Another Barwell resident found a dent in the hood of his
 automobile and a white stone
on the ground weighing between six and seven pounds.

News of the actual fall was slow to spread but when it did,
 hell broke loose because
the British Museum had promised financial rewards for each
 and every find. Several
larger fragments and innumerable small stones were located
 by field parties and local
 residents.

While initial disruption occurred at an altitude of about
 25 miles, final disruption probably
occurred at a very low altitude above Barwell.

The  Barwell L5 chondrite has a gray interior,
numerous FeNi specks and grayish chondrules
that give it a mottled look. Interestingly, some of the
fragments at Barwell came in from slightly
different directions - maybe due to strong winds high up in
 the atmosphere because a distinct
 smoke trail rapidly disappeared.

A 17-pounder made a perfectly vertical hole in sandy loam
soil to a depth of 27 inches.
A 14 ½ ounce fragment penetrated the roof of a local
 factory.
A 7-pound piece lay in an 18-inch hole.
A 6-pound chunk was found in a factory backyard partly
 buried in a cinder heap!

Maybe among the cognoscenti of this
 bulletin board someone might know
what I can't seem to locate through vigorous research.

For a future feature in Meteorite magazine, it would help
 me to know
the approximate terrestrial age of Bonita Springs H5
 (Florida).

While there is an interesting debate raging (maybe it's not
 exactly
THAT interesting OR raging) about the parent body of H
 chondrites (see
Dave Weir's website for the Reader's Digest version of
 the
arguments) it's the terrestrial age of this specific met
 that stumps
 me.

How long has Bonita Springs been cooling its chondrules on
 planet Earth?

Hi Mckinney,

It's been suggested that mesosiderites are the result of a collision of a
parent
body containing eucrite material and core material. The result is a melting of
the material and forming the nearly equal parts of metal to silicate. There is
a
lot that is not understood yet about this class, but it is thought it could
have
impacted when the core of a asteroid was still molten with material from the
eucrite parent body.

Because of this it is possible that some of the material was melted (as in your
Vaca sample) into a glassy material. I believe there is an absence of olivine
in
mesosiderites.

McSween book is a good source for chemical makeup of various types of
meteorites.

 Hi List,

I collect all meteorites that I can afford.  This
 includes common
types, NWA finds, and unclassified material.

As finances allow, I like to focus on whole crusted peas of
 recent
falls.  Specifically, I collect all falls since 2000 -
 the 21st
Century Meteorites.  I prefer small specimens of high
 quality over
larger specimens of lower quality - so that is why I
 gravitate towards
 whole crusted peas.

I also like achondrites and planetaries, but I can usually
 afford only
specks or crumbs of such material.

 Best regards,

 Greetings List,

I have a 329.5 gram unclassified NWA endcut that I'd like
to dispose of. I purchased this piece from a certain Chicago
(Elgin) resident who shall remain nameless. Every time I
look at it I want to kick myself for ever doing business
with this individual. It was decribed by him as having
rippling black fusion crust on the back. On the basis of
this description I purchase it. What I got is a sandblasted
weathered OC that I spent way too much money on. I will send
it to any individual on the list for the price of postage.

I'd prefer to send it USPS Priority to the U.S. $5.50? and
if it's going overseas I'll quote you a shipping price.
 First response gets it.

 thanks,

 Hi Brian, McKinney, Listoids:

eBay, like rock roll, will never die. It's the
greatest platform for buying and selling meteorites the
world has ever seen. Everything else too. Before eBay,
where could the Average Joe go to buy his stones? After
eBay buys Craigslist, (it already owns all the European
Craigslist sites and is a major owner of Cl) it will become
the final vestige of the free enterprise system, (along with
Wal-Mart.) eBay has always had bugs, like when it sputters
when you're listing and you have to redo the auction. I
use eBay heavily daily and I haven't seen the slowdown
others are talking about. Maybe it's increased usage for
the holiday season overloading and bottlenecking the
bandwith? eBay has been sort of screwing the sellers
lately, but they'll come around and realize who it is
that's giving them all that money! Just my plug
 nickel's worth!

 Dear List Members,

I was just cruising around eBay for about five minutes and
my Internet Explorer popped up a message reading:
To help protect your security, Internet Explorer
blocked this site from downloading files to your computer.

This pretty much confirms what I and others have said at
the beginning of this thread, eBay IS downloading Spyware
and Cookies on our computers. Looks like eBay wants to
become Big Brother as well as a monopoly!!

Be sure to run your Spyware and other software programs to
rid your computers of their junk!

 Hi Folks!

Speaking strictly as a buyer, I dislike eBay's new look
 and
interface. I've been on eBay as a member since 1999
 and I have
witnessed all of the changes eBay has been through over the
 years -
 the good and the bad.

I find eBay's new look runs slower than previous
 incarnations and
it annoys me alot. Search results take longer to appear,
 regardless
of how you display or sort them. And it's now more
 tedious to
select and deselect search criteria. I also dislike the
 masking of
bidder's identities. I like to know who I am bidding
 against, and
this is another change that makes eBay more faceless and
 anonymous.
The sense of community that early eBay had is long gone,
 IMO.

FWIW, in almost 10 years on eBay (and about 7 on PayPal), I
 have
never had any virus or scam issues. Sure, I get the
 typical
crude phishing email attempts every so often, but who
 doesn't?
My mother gets PayPal phishing emails and she doesn't
 even use
PayPal. I think this recent new trend of eBay tripping off
firewalls is related to increased data gathering on
 eBay's part,
and not part of any overtly malicious agenda. It's
 intrusive, but
it's mostly harmless. Today's advanced antispyware
 and firewall
software is much more sensitive to threats than it used to
 be, and
that adds to the problem. I'm not discounting anyone
 else's
experiences to the contrary. I'm just saying my PC has
 never
been attacked with a virus or malware coming from eBay or
 PayPal
in 10 years of frequent usage.

The old saying of if it isn't broke, don't
 fix it applies here
to eBay. IMO, the look and interface of eBay was fine
 before
this last round of changes. I don't see any
 improvements, and
it makes me look at the eBay experience as a chore now, and
 not
a pleasure - like it used to be years ago.

I'd much rather deal directly with my fellow list
 members off eBay,
than use the eBay interface anyway. It's more
 personal, it's
friendlier, and it's cheaper for everyone involved.

 Regards and clear skies,

 MikeG

I agree that there is a special characteristic
that would be lost if the
red staining were to be removed from a
 Millbillillie individual.
  However,
it is also great to have meteorites pristine with
 no terrestrial
  alteration.
The priciest Millbillillies are those that with
 dark black glassy crusts.

No, a meteorite like Millbillillie should be looked at
 in a much more
  subtle way!

It fell in 1960, and was collected no earlier than 10
 years later! Talking
  about
Millbillillie is exciting in many respects, as it e.
 g. displays different
  textures on
cut slices, but talking about exterior surface, I
 would always prefer a
  piece with
natural (laterite) patina over a piece which was
 somehow cleaned (..if
  this were
possible..) or has only got some more or less glossy
 black crust alone
  rather than
the brownish-reddish surface stains that are so very
 *typical* for this
  meteorite,
and are part of its character, so to
 say...!

You are right insofar as, when we are talking about
 may be fresh Eucrites
  or fresh
Howardites, we are looking and longing for fresh
 glossy black crust in the
  first place,
as will be the case with e. g. the early collected
 pieces of a historical
  fall like Stannern,
or some rare other finds and falls, but things are a
 quite a bit different
  with a fall like
Millbillillie, even if it occured as late as 1960,
 considered a fresh
  fall

Well, nothing but my two (Euro-)Cents,

2008-08-29 Thread mckinney trammell
i am taking offers on a 10g millen, ga slice and a 10g cumberland falls, ky
slice. wholesale offer will be declined. i may play that stupid ebay game,
depending, but they won't be give-aways. i'd let the list get a shot at them ,
first. i am considering letting my 26 g bonita springs, fl go, also. i know the
minimum i want for each. but a multiple-specimen offer may catch me off guard
and larger #'s may be too tempting to hold these fine skyrox, any more. good,
solid, durable pieces. pix after offers. serious only.

NASA'S Phoenix Lander Robotic Arm Camera Sees
 Possible Ice
 Jet Propulsion Laboratory
 May 30, 2008

TUCSON, Ariz.-- Scientists have discovered what may
 be ice that was
exposed when soil was blown away as NASA's Phoenix
 spacecraft landed on
Mars last Sunday, May 25. The possible ice appears
 in an image the
robotic arm camera took underneath the lander, near
 a footpad.

We could very well be seeing rock, or we could be
 seeing exposed ice in
the retrorocket blast zone, said Ray Arvidson of
 Washington University,
St. Louis, Mo., co-investigator for the robotic arm.
 We'll test the two
ideas by getting more data, including color data,
 from the robotic arm
camera. We think that if the hard features are ice,
 they will become
brighter because atmospheric water vapor will
 collect as new frost on
 the ice.

Full confirmation of what we're seeing will come
 when we excavate and
analyze layers in the nearby workspace, Arvidson
 said.

Testing last night of a Phoenix instrument that
 bakes and sniffs samples
to identify ingredients identified a possible short
 circuit. This
prompted commands for diagnostic steps to be
 developed and sent to the
lander in the next few days. The instrument is the
 Thermal and Evolved
Gas Analyzer. It includes a calorimeter that tracks
 how much heat is
needed to melt or vaporize substances in a sample,
 plus a mass
spectrometer to examine vapors driven off by the
 heat. The Thursday, May
29, tests recorded electrical behavior consistent
 with an intermittent
short circuit in the spectrometer portion.

We have developed a strategy to gain a better
 understanding of this
behavior, and we have identified workarounds for
 some of the
possibilities, said William Boynton of the
 University of Arizona,
Tucson, lead scientist for the instrument.

The latest data from the Canadian Space Agency's
 weather station shows
another sunny day at the Phoenix landing site with
 temperatures holding
at minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 degrees
 Fahrenheit) as the sol's
high, and a low of minus 80 degrees Celsius (minus
 112 degrees
Fahrenheit). The lidar instrument was activated for
 a 15-minute period
just before noon local Mars time, and showed
 increasing dust in the
 atmosphere.

This is the first time lidar technology has been
 used on the surface of
another planet, said the meteorological station's
 chief engineer, Mike
Daly, from MDA in Brampton, Canada. The team is
 elated that we are
getting such interesting data about the dust
 dynamics in the atmosphere.

The mission passed a safe to proceed review on
 Thursday evening,
meeting criteria to proceed with evaluating and
 using the science
 instruments.

We have evaluated the performance of the spacecraft
 on the surface and
found we're ready to move forward. While we are
 still investigating
instrument performance such as the anomaly on TEGA
 [Thermal and Evolved
Gas Analyzer], the spacecraft's infrastructure has
 passed its tests and
gets a clean bill of health, said David Spencer of
 NASA's Jet
 Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., deputy
 project manager for
 Phoenix.

We're still in the process of checking out our
 instruments, Phoenix
project scientist Leslie Tamppari of JPL said. The
 process is designed
to be very flexible, to respond to discoveries and
 issues that come up
every day. We're in the process of taking images and
 getting color
information that will help us understand soil
 properties. This will help
us understand where best to first touch the soil and
 then where and how
 best to dig.

The Phoenix mission is led by Peter Smith at the
 University of Arizona
with project management at JPL and development
 partnership at Lockheed
 Martin, Denver. International contributions come
 from the Canadian Space
 Agency; the University of Neuchatel, Switzerland;
 the universities of
Copenhagen and Aarhus, Denmark; Max Planck
 Institute, Germany; and the
Finnish Meteorological Institute. For more about
 Phoenix, visit:

Yes they were tornadoes in Colorado this afternoon.
 Starting just after
noon, a cluster of tornadoes, probably category 3,
 touched down about 50 miles
north of Denver and went on north to Wyoming,
following the front range of the
 Rockies..
A lot of damage to several small towns, and a lot of
 farms on the way. Only
casualties: one man in a mobile home, and a bunch of
 cows when a dairy was
 completely flattened.

For all the details and pictures, look at:

In the mountains, some snow above 9000 feet (3000

In Denver, a lot of wind, a bit of rain. Nothing
 much really.

Idaho man gives meteorite to Utah

   Associated Press - April 29, 2008 6:25 PM ET

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A man who found a meteorite
 in
Utah is giving it to the public.

The 18-pound Gunlock Meteorite is the size of a
bowling ball and now on display at the Utah
 Department
of Natural Resources in Salt Lake City.

Don Adair of Boise, Idaho, found it near Gunlock,
 a
southern Utah town, in 1982. He says the black
 color
made it stand out like a big bandage on a sore
 thumb.

He sawed it in half and gave a portion to the
 American
Museum of Natural History in New York. Adair
 recently
decided to give the other half to Utah.

Utah officials believe it could be billions of
 years
old. Meteorites originate from comets, asteroids
 or
   other planets.

  Rare meteorite goes under hammer

A meteorite is expected to fetch £500,000 at
 auction in New York this
 month.

Weighing more than 925lbs, the object was
 discovered eight years ago in
  China's Xinjiang Uygar province.

Its rare olivine crystals endured atmospheric and
 impact forces as it
  crashed down to Earth.

Bonhams' Natural History Department director Thomas
 Lindgren said: Less
than 1% of all meteorites are pallasites, the most
 alluring of all
meteorites due to their aesthetic appeal.

Pallasites - meteorites composed of around 50%
 olivine and peridot crystals
and 50% nickel-iron - are thought to be relics of
 forming planets.

The Fukang meteorite will go under the hammer at
Bonhams on April 30 in New
  York.

Sardis is bleak in the online literature but it is
 recorded in the BM's
Catalog of Meteorites. The mass rested in Miocene
 clays(23.03-5.33
mybp). Identified in 1940. I recall reading that
 while some iron
 core(s) were recovered,(800kg), a large amount of
 shale was left in the
bank. The main mass(s) location now is unclear.

 Find location listed as 32° 56' 56 N / 81° 51' 54

Sardis, Georgia is SSE of Augusta and Waynesboro
 near the SC state

I plan to call the local Chamber of Commerce/Library

 armed with a bit
 more info.

Has anyone ever visited the site/found anything?
