[meteorite-list] Moss, Norway meteorite laws and news
Hi everyone, I am in Chigcago, on my way home after a travel day from hell with stops in the UK and the chaos at the airports there. My advice, AVOID THE UK at all costs right now. Pretty much strip searches, plastic baggie with passport and money was all I could carry on, overflowing bins of goodies taken from people, thousands of bags on the ground sitting in the rain, endless lines and no-one seemed to have a clue what to do. My bags made is somehow, and I now have the Moss meteorites safely in my hands again, it was hard to sleep wondering if some airport lackey had deemed them as dangerous and tossed them in the incinerator! Now on to this Norwegian article condemning myself and my fellow meteorite hunters. I am dissapointed in reading it, since I had a meeting with the people from the National museum regarding the laws and was told that I was welcome to take anything I found or bought, since Norway had no law against it. Now it seems, that while true, they did not want to cooperate hunting with me as they suggested, but rather were just gathering information to use in harrasing me. I searched for 8 days in Moss, and never once ran into a scientists, museum curator, or any other official out hunting meteorites in the forest, mosquito-infested bogs, or streets of Moss. I met the museum people at my hotel for two hours, then they promtly took a bus back to Oslo. I guess hunting meteorites is not their forte, just complaining about those of us who save them from destruction and preserve them. The piece that Morten Bilet and I found was in a parking area at a large factory. Many pieces had been run over and crushed into grey piles of dust by the time we discovered it and saved over 800 grams of extremely rare material from further destruction. Now I am called a thief for legally removing it from Norway. I have already submitted pieces for classification, and the thin sections are being made and we will have perhaps preliminary classification by the end of the month. I have museums around the world already slated for pieces, and collectors as well. There is enough material for both the museums in Norway, the scientific world, and the private collection community to share. I am proud of what I do, the risks I take, and the time and energy I spend chasing these falls. Until I see legions of scientists out there doing it beside me, I know who is the one who provides them with their study material, and who saves the meteorites from destruction or loss. If Morten and I had not found our specimen when we did, it would be 800 grams of grey mud right now, not a pristine meteorite already in the lab! I think Strope got it right, it is over 3100.00 grams. Exaughsted from another day of Muonionalusta hunting. Out of 7 teams hunting today, there was only one 10 kilogram meteorite found. This area is odd, some days are great, some produce nothing. Mike -- Original message -- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jim or Sterling Jim guessed 3169g, and Sterling said 3000g. [meteorite-list] Muonionalusta, Sweden Report
Hi everyone, we finally got some internet access here in Sweden, for the last 10 days I have been driving every other day to Finland to check emails, now I should have daily access until I leave for home. Well, today was my 8th day hunting, and I suppose you all saw the email that I found a 47 kilogram iron on my birthday, August 4th. Since then, Robert Ward and I have been searching hard for days with no success. Well, today we changed that up a bit. I found a 25 kilogram regmaglypted piece after an hour of searching this afternoon. Robert then found an 8 kilogram piece a little later. Then he got a weak signal with the 2x2 meter coil and no signal with the Minelab, so we knew he had a deep one. We dug for nearly two hours in glacial till, removing large rocks of at least 40 and 50 kilos, then found the meteorite at 1.6 meter deep. We thought for sure it would be a large one, but alas, he found a beautiful 4 kilogram Muonionalusta shaped just like a shoe! Well, I have all of tomorrow to search, then Friday driving half the day to ship my pieces as air cargo, then back for an afternoon of hunting, then out of here on Saturday. Monday night I will be home at last, free from the knats and mosquitos that have surely sucked a pint or two of blood from me! This has certainly been an interesting 3 weeks in the meteorite world. Dang, what a note to see that a new fall has occured in India! I am now in Finland, on my way back to Sweden to hunt Muonionalusta. By this time tomorrow, I plan to have a pile of irons, a bag full of CC, and be making plans for India trip as well! I have sent specimens of the Moss Norway fall to a top scientist in the USA to work on, so we might have an idea soon. I have many fragments as does Morten Bilet. It will be up for sale in a few weeks, but there is not much to offer as most fragments are small, around 1 or 2 grams, but we have some larger ones. I will likely be offering my larger pieces to Museums in trade. I may well be back in Moss, Norway in a few days, but the Sweden trip was planned and we would have lost our plane tickets if we didnt go today. [meteorite-list] Norway CO3 Fall
Time for another meteorite report from Norway. Well, we lost one team member as Bob Haag bugged out and flew back to Tucson today. We have been wlaking, hiking, swimming, and driving all over the fall area with still no luck. This area is awful for meteorite hunting. We know another piece was found but no information. We have a feature article coming out tomorrow in the regional newspaper, and Haag, Karl, Ward, and myself were on the Norway national news last night. It should drum up some information. The locals are also beggining to come home from vacations, so I expect some more homes and gardens were hit by falling stars! I expect so spend until Tuesday here, then it is on to Sweden for some serious Muonionalusta digging! So as it stands, the newest meteorite fall is a tough nut to crack and not something that will be flooding the market anytime soon. RE: [meteorite-list] NORWAY meteorite hunt
I think that between Haag, myself, Rainer Bartochewitz (who classifies meteorite) and the others, we have a pretty good handle on the simple fact that it is a carbonaceous chondrite. The CO3´s are pretty distinct, so I think this one is in the bag as a CO3. But of course, only the final classification will confirm for all. Due to a vehicle problem, part of my day today will be spent in repair mode. Though a prior team has implied that a Poland team was disrespectful of private property. Shameful if true. None from France, or Austria, or the UK though. Surprising, indeed. I would have imagined Rob Elliott or one of the Carions might have made the journey. Now, on to the meteorite! It IS A CO, Carbonaceous. NO DOUBT unless it gets some wierd exception in classification. So I was right, as were many others who guessed CO2 or CO3. CO2??? You must be drinking some good stuff over there! ;-) In the face of overwhelming popular opinion to the contrary, I'll stick to my guns and assume it ISN'T a CO3 until I hear/read otherwise from someone who has done a formal classification. NO DOUBT unless it gets some wierd exception in classification. So I was right, as were many others who guessed CO2 or CO3. It is a meteorite that will take your breath away! It also had the misfortune of falling in one of the worst imaginable places for searching! This area is of course, absolutely beautiful, fjords, trees, endless berrys to eat like strawberrys, blueberrys, and raspberrys, lots of tall, blonde women, and it is not 400,000 degrees like Tucson right now. What is wrong is that it is high growing season, so every flat surface is being farmed with full grown wheat, barley, peas, cabbage, etc. Every other surface is extremely heavy forest with deep layers of moss that you sink in, lakes, swamps, or fjords full of cruise ships. Their is absolutely no place to easily search other than a few parks and shopping centers and industrial sites. From the siye of the fireball, it is certain that there are many pieces, but highly unlikely that much will be found other than by locals in their yards, and most locals are on vacation and not here. So to end so that I can get some sleep for the first time in 3 days, there is little news to report so far other than Norway got lucky with a fabulous new CC. Now it is time to feed the mosquitoes while I sleep for the few hours of darkness there is in this part of the world at this time of the year. At around 2:05 a.m. on Wednesday, residents of the northern part of Troms and the western areas of Finnmark could clearly see a ball of fire taking several seconds to travel across the sky. A few minutes later an impact could be heard and geophysics and seismology research foundation NORSAR registered a powerful sound and seismic disturbances at 02:13.25 a.m. at their station in Karasjok. Farmer Peter Bruvold was out on his farm in Lyngseidet with a camera because his mare Virika was about to foal for the first time. I saw a brilliant flash of light in the sky, and this became a light with a tail of smoke, Bruvold told Aftenposten.no. He photographed the object and then continued to tend to his animals when he heard an enormous crash. I heard the bang seven minutes later. It sounded like when you set off a solid charge of dynamite a kilometer (0.62 miles) away, Bruvold said. Astronomers were excited by the news. There were ground tremors, a house shook and a curtain was blown into the house, Norway's best known astronomer Knut Jørgen Røed Ødegaard told Aftenposten.no. Røed Ødegaard said the meteorite was visible to an area of several hundred kilometers despite the brightness of the midnight sunlit summer sky. The meteorite hit a mountainside in Reisadalen in North Troms. This is simply exceptional. I cannot imagine that we have had such a powerful meteorite impact in Norway in modern times. If the meteorite was as large as it seems to have been, we can compare it to the Hiroshima bomb. Of course the meteorite is not radioactive, but in explosive force we may be able to compare it to the (atomic) bomb, Røed Ødegaard said. The astronomer believes the meteorite was a giant rock and probably the largest known to have struck Norway. The record was the Alta meteorite that landed in 1904. That one was 90 kilos (198 lbs) but we think the meteorite that landed Wednesday was considerably larger, Røed Ødegaard said, and urged members of the public who saw the object or may have found remnants to contact the Institute of Astrophysics. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Oum Dreyga was reported and recovered in a hevily military zone, so much more difficult for me or anyone else to operate in the zone. I am not sure why Matteo cant handle the facts, but they are crystal clear. For the reason why Egypt, or Mauritania might not get so many recovered falls, well, Morocco is well settled all over the country, Egypt and Mauritania are very sparsely settled, with people all concentrated in urban areas, so any falls outside those areas have virtually no chance of recovery. Perhaps when you use common sense, you might understand the cause for so many witnessed recovered falls in Morocco. It is a desert, so searching is not difficult. It is almost always clear, so most falls would be seen by someone. It is a very hot country, so the culture there means people are outside well into the nighttime where in most western nations, most people are inside staring at their televisions come nighttime. It is a country where almost everyone has heard about meteorites and they equate the fall with $$$. Re: [meteorite-list] Fukang meteorite
Then like Brenham or Brahin, you pays your money and you takes your chances? Brenham and Brahin cost like 90% less than Fukang, so paying $1 or $2 gram and losing it is not like spending $20 or $25 gram on Fukang and not having a clue where your piece came from. How is a buyer going to know if it came from the center or the upper left quarter 4 centimers from the crust/rust surface? They wont know, until either it stays fine or rusts into nothing, worth nothing. Mike -- Original message -- From: Matt Morgan [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or on the other hand, it can be completely stable. I have had 4 slices now for a few months that show no signs of rusting whatsoever. These were taken from an external chunk on the top of the mass. I have an Imilac slice right now that was rusting until I refinished it and stabilized it (purchased from a very well known dealer I may add). Re: [meteorite-list] Fukang meteorite
Yes Matt, I understand, but you cant just make it so simple as well. We all know that some Brahin is crap, some is superb, same with Brenham. Yet I have never seen Esquel rust, nor Seymchan, nor Glorietta. This comes from the fact that people have been touting how nice Fukang is (and I agree, it is a beautiful meteorite with superb large crystals) yet the fact that I know some people who bought pieces last year from Kilgore, that it is all rusting. Now when we try to discuss that fact, several people have been emailing and calling me to complain that I should not say that if I dont have any. I find that terrible, it seems that people want to sell it knowing full well that the meteorite they are charging $20 or $25 gram for might be a serious problem ruster. Now, people who sell Brahin or Brenham know it may rust, this the very low price for that danger built into the cheap price. But Fukang commands an Imilac or Esquel piece, neither of which are problem meteorites. I find that to be a risk to the customers/collectors that I am here to serve. I will sell you a Brahin, but you know beforehand that it could rust to nothing. It seems that most dealers are trying to avoid that fact with the super-expensive Fukang. This is my point. Mike -- Original message -- From: Matt Morgan [EMAIL PROTECTED] Agreed Mike, you do take your chances on buying ANY meteorite. It aint like buying coins. All I was trying to get at is you can't make blanket statements that this one doesn't rust, but that one does. It depends on where the piece came from and the preparation. I've spent 20-25/g on Imilac to have it rust in 6 mos because it wasn't prepared correctly. Matt [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Then like Brenham or Brahin, you pays your money and you takes your chances? [meteorite-list] Munich notes
Hi everyone, After a hectic two days of perusing the massive Munich show, it is finally over, and I will be on my way home tomorrow with a stop in Paris. The weather here has been incredible, over 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky the last two days! Very abnormal for Germany at the end of October. The show was interesting, a lot of people who usually set up were not here. Some things of note, the Moroccans has virtually NO meteorites, compared to last year, there was like 10% what they used to have. Also there was a lot of the ´Fuking` Pallasite from China. It was being offered at less than 10Euros a gram in large chunks, I saw pieces from 100 grams to 2 kilos. Apparently the buyers have divided the massive pallasite up and are now going to flood the market. Looks like a good buying opportunity when the price collapses. It is beautiful stuff, but with over 900 kilos, coming on the market, we know where this goes. There were ZERO large gibeons or Sikhotes, except a couple at Erich Haiderer´s always full table. Moritz again had the best display of rare material, with Martian, Lunar, Pallasite, and nice irons from Aussie museum trades. Hans had the usual rally nice Campos, and Karl Sprich many nice Gibeon pieces cut into spheres and cubes. Moldavites are everywhere. I may have broken a planetary record in Morocco, so get your pennies rolled and wait for the news. I have not answered all 50-60 you have sent. You were given shipping options and you chose the higher, which did not cost you $35. $35 was figured using the www.usps.com website, and since it did not cost that I refunded almost half back to you. You did not ask me to do this or the like. I think the website figured shipping at 1 pound. Not sure, however I did show you how the rate was figured. Now, if you continue to e-mail as you have, or if you e-mail the list on me again, I will simply block you. You may think this is some game, I do not. Usually the scam involves the person wanting you to keep extra money, and only sending pqrt to them, that is to get you to overlook the facts and play on your greed so you quickly cash the check and send them money. Mike Farmer Dear IMCA and List Members, I was approached by a fellow calling himself Tim Trepagnier who claimed he was representing a client who was interested in one of my specimens that did not sell on ebay. He stipulated that the client would send me a money order in an amount greater than the asking price. The excess amount was supposed to be his commission and he wanted me to wire the difference to him immediately after cashing the check. This raised some suspicion with me but I did not want to think the worse. I have been involved in some pretty awkward international transactions before so I gave the benefit of the doubt to the deal until the money orders arrived. The first thing I noticed was that the envelope came from Spain and that no return address was on it. I opened the envelope and found that instead of a single money order, there were four totaling $3,600.00. The cost of the item he was pretending to be interested in was only $449.00 so I suspected he was trying to launder money through me. I called Travelers Express Company, the bank in which the money orders were drawn and waited on hold for 40 minutes. The scam artist(s) thought that most people would not tolerate the long hold times and assumed victims would think the checks were good since a real phone number was on the back of the check. After waiting on hold I found that the checks were counterfeits and that unbelievably several people have fallen for this scam. The way the scam was supposed to work is that I would have gone to my bank and received cash for the excess amount ($3,151.00) thinking the checks were good and then send it Western Union to the scam artist. He would get the good money right away realizing that my bank would latter find out the checks were counterfeit. I would have been out the full $3,600.00 and suffered the humiliation it would have caused. Not only that, I would have sent the specimen to a bogus address, maybe never getting it back. It would seem pretty obvious to most that a scam was about to be perpetrated in these circumstances but most like to think the best of people and might have fallen for it. This is what the scam artist(s) is counting on and I hate to see somebody get burned. Damn, too bad I am in Panama right now, or I would be there in a heartbeat Of course, Mugabe would want me to pay him for that stone. Mike Farmer http://www.zimbabweherald.com/index.php?id=46403 Meteorite leaves villagers dumbfounded By Freeman Razemba The Herald (Zimbabwe) August 30, 2005 VILLAGERS in Dotito, Mount Darwin were left dumbfounded last week and are living in fear after they discovered a black stone, which is believed to have fallen from the outer space. The stone known as meteorite was 21cm long and 13cm wide, weighing about 4,1kg. It has since been taken to Forensic Scientists Laboratory at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Harare for further investigations. These types of stones fall to the earth and contain grains of nickel-iron and metal. Mashonaland Central police spokesperson Inspector Michael Munyikwa said several villagers from Chaworeka Village heard noise like that of a helicopter last Monday at around 5pm. The villagers heard some noise, which resembled that of a helicopter, coming from the eastern direction and the noise was followed by clouds of dust, he said. Insp Munyikwa said the stone fell on the ground a few minutes later and about metres away from a Mr Jeriko Muzanembi's homestead. He was cutting some poles in a field when the incident occurred. Mr Muzanembi and other villagers teamed up and went to investigate and discovered that it was an object, which looked like a stone. The impact of the stone cut 15cm deep into the earth when it landed on the ground and the villagers discovered that it was an object which looked like a stone. It was black in colour and had white particles inside, said Insp Munyikwa. A report was made to the police who informed the forensic scientists, geologists and the army. It was taken to Dotito Police Station and later, to Harare. According to some scientists, the stone could have changed its size, colour and weight as it was falling to the ground, as a result of high temperatures, which could have been more than 2 000 Degrees Celsius. Police said after completing their investigations with the help of some experts, the stone would be taken to the National Museum. A meteorite is a small extra-terrestrial body that reaches the earth's surface. While in space these bodies are called meteoroids and they are called meteors after entering earth's atmosphere but before reaching the surface. These are small asteroids, approximately boulder sized or less. When it enters the atmosphere, air drag and friction cause the body to heat up and emit light, thus forming a fireball or shooting star. Throughout the ages, meteorites were venerated as sacred objects by different cultures and ancient civilisations. The spectacular fall of a meteorite, accompanied by light and sound phenomena, such as falling stars, smoke, thunder, and sonic booms, has always kindled the human imagination, evoking fear and awe in everyone who witnesses such an event. For obvious reasons, the remnants of these incidents, the actual meteorites, were often kept as sacred stones or objects of power. They were worshiped, and used in their respective religious ceremonies. However, a meteorite on a celestial body is a small object that has come from elsewhere in space. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Canyon Diablo
They are being hunted now. Mike Farmer Walter, It isn't well known, but there were some hidden caches in various shops and homes in Northern Arizona. Several years ago, I talked with a person in the Kingman area who reportedly had literally tons of Canyon Diablo meteorites in storage. Although I never got him to disclose the actual weight of what he was sitting on, several contacts did tell me that he had a whole room full. Someone else told me they saw several boxes of rusty iron meteorites in the back room of a rock shop along Interstate 40 (Route 66) back in the 1980s. This could be the same place or it could be two different locations. I'm sure that there is a lot of CD material stashed away throughout Arizona. Five or so years ago, I was visiting the father of an old friend of mine and saw a picture of him (as a young boy) with a big iron meteorite that I estimated to weigh 70-80 lbs. This 85 year old fellow told me how he and his father had driven to Meteor Crater back in the 1930s and returned home to Globe (Arizona) with the big iron in the back of their Model T. It sat on the front porch of their house for a couple of decades until the family moved. No one seems to remember where it is now, but they thought it was left on the porch because it was too heavy to move to Phoenix. When I asked him why he and his father had made such a long, rough trip (on mostly dirt or gravel roads) he told me it was a popular thing for the copper miners in the Globe/Miami/Superior area to do for recreation! There is also the possibility that some meteorite hunters are still working in the strewn field even though it is now illegal. The meteorite has not been classified yet, however it looks a lot like Bensour or Kilabo to me. I imagine this was posted to the list about a year ago, but the BBC did a really good job on its article, by just quoting the homeowner and not putting in any price speculation or untrue facts. So forgive me for reposting it, if that is the case. Here is a 64g fragment with sheetrock that was not water damaged. http://www.meteoritearticles.com/colneworleans.html Mark Bostick BBC News United Kingdom Date: Monday, October 6, 2003 'A meteorite smashed through my roof' The chances of being hit by a chunk of space rock are measured in the billions-to-one. Roy Fausset, 59, had the closest of escapes last month when what scientists now say was a meteorite crashed through his New Orleans home. I walked through my front door and it was like a mortar bomb had fallen on my house. There was dust all over the floor of the entrance way and the two doors leading to a utility room and the powder room had been blown open. There was ceiling debris everywhere. I thought it must have been a broken pipe, but there was no water. As I was coming home, I'd noticed something on the roof, but had thought nothing of it. It turned out there was a hole the size of a basketball through the tiles. Whatever it was, it had passed through the attic, then my daughter's bedroom, through the powder room and into the crawl space under the floor. I thought it must have been some frozen waste that had fallen from a passenger airliner - they are carrying out improvements at our local airport, so planes have been diverted over our house. I called the police. An investigator went down into the crawl space and he found some rock fragments. There are no rocks in New Orleans, it's all silt. He said: 'It's a meteorite.' I took a sample over to the nearby Tulane University, where Stephen Nelson - the head of earth and environmental sciences department - examined it. He said the rock was rhyolite - which is found in Mexico and Texas. He thought it must have been thrown out of a plane by a vandal or become attached to a plane somehow and then fallen off. But now, after further analysis, it seems it has a profile consistent with that of a meteorite. The police investigator was right. I've collected up all the pieces. It's not a meteorite from Mars or Venus, which sell for $1,500 a gram. It probably came from an asteroid, so is only worth $3 - $10 a gram. It might help with the repairs. But I don't care about the money. I'm just very grateful that no one was injured. We really dodged the bullet. If anyone had been at home, they might have been killed. I think just hearing the noise would have caused me to expire. One of my neighbours was out in her yard with her children eating popsicles. They heard the impact and thought it was a car accident. If it had fallen 100 feet away, they could all have died. I've been very disorientated by the whole thing, especially when I consider what a narrow escape we all had and what could have happened. I keep asking: Why me? Maybe God was telling me something? I certainly went to church on Sunday and I will never mock Him as I did in my foolish youth. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list ---BeginMessage--- attachment: winmail.dat---End Message--- __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

There is an interposition force, ruled by UN, called MINURSO that tries to keep the country in peace, since 1976 ( if my old memory is good. ) A berm ( sand wall) was raised by Morocco to stop the Polisario troops ( the regular Western Sahara army) to free the invaded side of its country Geography: It seems to me that, according the info that gave Adam, the 16 october fall happened in the still free territories, under Polisario control. Re: [meteorite-list] An insight to Amgala and other recent falls
gotta answer a few points Adam, 1. I destroyed Thuathe? I got almost 20 kilograms from the locals, paid them a FAIR price unlike Mr Ronnie McKenzie who was happy to pay then one CENT per gram. I sold for $6.00 to $8 gram, so Im not sure how that is destroying the price. Perhaps you can clarify that one for me? Did you not hand me the paperwork for it? Tell us all please if I somehow stole it from you. I was offended by your partners wife, so instead of buying from you, I went and got it myself. Again, I fail to see the problem. 2. Bensour, I got over 25 kilos of that fall. I was at the tucson show when it fell, I never said or implied that I was the first, Dean Bessey posted it for sale if I recall before anyone. you seem to imply that I destroyed Bensour by selling at a loss. No Adam, I think I cost myself alot of money, and made some EXTREMELY happy collectors and museums. you seem to think that collectors want to pay top dollar? Again, I fail to see the logic in that post. I got a meteorite, had a spat with Bessy, and sold cheap to make a point. The point was made I belive. So I guess a few dealers were not happy. I am not here to please other dealers, only my customers and myself. 3. On this fall, fine, so be it, I did not know you had it, have been busy in the field in Oman and elswhere, while you sit at home getting DHL packages, so since you did get it first, my hat is off to you, congratulations, I know you like to play junior scientist, so go for it. I never said I was the only one on this, I announced it when I got it in my hands, if that broke open your little secret, well, I guess you should have coordinated with me on that. And I did not say you made up anything to trump me, however, it would not be the first time that someone has posted that they have tons of material when they do not. Casper used to do that all the time, he did it with NWA 482 and many other meteorites. I dont think that asking to see the material is a problem if you have it? If that is a problem, tell us what it is? 4. why would I damage the market? I want o offer my customers a good price while making a profit for myself and my partners, that is the crux of American business. Are you saying I should mark it up many more times than I paid? What price do you want Adam, $100 gram, $50 gram? The things you said Adam were wrong, I have answered them point by point logically. I would think the collectors on this list want good meteorites at the best possible prices. If you are telling me that they are angry that I sold Bensour cheap, damn, I had better raise my prices accross the board and make everyone happy again. Ill bet that will raise some smiles from my customers. Adam, sorry I stumbled onto your fall. This was my 30th COUNT them 30 trips to Morocco. This caused our supplier to raise his prices to the point it was no longer attractive and we sent most of the material back. These statements have been made a couple times in the past and I have kept my mouth shut knowing Mike would respond. But as the other member of thuathe trip this time I decided to post the facts. Mike and I paid between $0.50 and $0.90 per gram to the villagers for their thuathe. We also bought several kilograms from Tony Ambrose for $2.00 per gram. We were told on numerous occasions by many unrelated sources that Tony was paying $0.10 per gram or less. Yes, we paid 5-10 times what Tony was paying. Yes, Tony was probably pissed he had to pay a fair price afterwards, but we left him a pile of money so he could afford to. There wasn't a single piece Mike and I bought from the villagers that we felt we paid too much for. I'd be happy to pay less, but I'd still pay the same prices again for those pieces. After expenses we felt $6-$8 per gram was a fair price and we have pretty much maintained those prices since. The only way we proceeded to destroy the market was to quench some of the demand. If your supplier shafted you by raising his prices then I suggest it was his greed not the fact Mike and I paid $0.50 more per gram in the field. I want to congratulate all of you who bought NWA 2046, the Olivine-orthopyroxene-phyric Shergottite from me. I have just recieved news that is going to break very soon that will make this meteorite far more interesting than before. You will all hear it soon enough, but it is likely to go on CNN. It does have something to do with the Spirit Mars rover... The price is no longer valid on my website. It is being pulled from sale. Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson help/Trenton or Belmont
Mark, I have a gorgeous piece of Trenton for sale in my room, with old labels. Mike Farmer Inn Suites, room 184. It looks as though I will be missing out on Tucson for the first time in ten years. The resulting pain would be considerably eased, however, if I could locate and acquire a decent-sized (larger than micro) piece of Trenton (III A), Washington Co., WI. Almost as good would be a Belmont (H6), Grant Co., WI. If any of you in Tucson or Tucson bound either has such a specimen or encounters one while there and would let me know, I would be most grateful. Many thanks from the snowy northland, Mark -- CoreComm Webmail. http://home.core.com __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Tucson show report
Hi everyone, another show report live from Tucson. There is some very nice new meteorites here at the show, no new falls though, so that dissapoints me. Some large sales have already occured, so money is there and it seems that the economy is coming back to life. I have not seen anything nice that the Moroccans brought in, although Ali Hamani has some great stuff as usual. It is nice and warm here, although they are calling for snow in Tucson on tuesday! I'll belive it when I see it. Everyone is just getting started so there is plenty to see here. I am waiting for some of you, so let me know when you are getting here. [meteorite-list] Arkansas fall report
Hi everyone, I just got back from the scene of the first reported piece of the Monday night Arkansas fall. The piece that recieved so much news attention is a 200 gram fragment of slag. Not a meteorite as the finder so adamantly kept telling me because the scientists and TV reporters said so. When I saw that a piece was reported found, I decided to jump on the next and last plane out of Tucson, I had merely 45 minutes from booking to get on the plane! I got to Arkansas on standby late last night and drove to my friend Gary Loyd's house. He has a new baby, my godson, so I found this a sufficient excuse to come whether or not the meteorite was real. He lives an hour and 45 minutes from Palastine. Anyway, the reports from the people there are that monday night a huge lightshow and explosion were heard, then many following booms, and people in Joneboro 45 minutes to the north saw the meteorite break up into many pieces as it headed south- southeast. That does put it exactly in line with Palastine where I went today. Does anyone know how close you should be to the fall site if sonic booms are heard? The area is prime for hunting, mostly large farms and almost all are barren right now, having been harvested for the winter. There are without a doubt alot of meteorites on the ground somewhere in that area, and hopefully some farmer will find some true meteorites. Ill spend the weekend here waiting to see if anything else turns up, but so far, no cigar. [meteorite-list] Munich show
Hi everyone, just a quick note before I head down to work here at the Munich mineral show. It is a huge show, 3 buildings, all with several hundres dealers. Nice museum exhibits including the Neuschwanstien meteorite. There are of course, alot of meteorites here, but virtually NOTHING from the Moroccan dealers! Each one has a small flat or two of chondrites almost all are the several thousand kilo NWA under so many names. Some nice historical meteorites, ALL with very high prices. Nothing in any sort of bulk except the maligned Shirokovsky, which the Russian owner is still selling with the help of a very nice display and printed information that looks like it was made in hollywood. That scam is with us to stay! More later. Mike Farmer __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hi everyone, I am in Prague Czech Republic. I have just visited the nice museum here and saw the meteorite collection. Some very rare historic meteorites, nice old displays, 200 year old fall reports. I will be in Munich this weekend selling with Hans Koser in the International hall. I hope to see many of my European clients there. Thanks Mike Farmer __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
