I believe that 'Ashes' in Arabic is 'Al-qali' meaning 'the thing that was roasted' it would be interesting to read the original translation; I bet it's been misinterpreted... Here are some other possible interpretations from the 'left like ashes' phrase when it gets translated from Arabic:
