I really don't think this discussion belongs here, but since you are
talking about the area where I grew up, rather than just where you drive
through, I feel I must comment. The San Joaquin/Central Valley of
California is so vast that it has more than one common name. You can't
treat it like it's one place for agriculture. The agriculture in the
north is very different from the south, and that of the west is very
different from the east. The source of water for agriculture on the east
side is underground or from canals that originate in the Sierra Nevada.
Each drought has put pressure on both sources, but agriculture still
thrives. The biggest issue on the east side is that the population keeps
expanding into the farm land. As a result the water table keeps going
lower. The source of water on the west side is underground and the
Sacramento river delta. The delta water was promised to farmers but
never fully delivered. When the wetlands started to disappear the water
rations were set ever lower (thus the signs about the government). With
large populations, wild lands, and agriculture all fighting for the same
water something is going to have to give. This is not a matter of
over-regulation, but one of necessary resource management. Better ways
of using the water with less waste, both for the residents and by
farmers is the only reasonable solution, and of course, people like our
friend here will cry foul about that, but this is simply a natural
result of having so many people living in such close quarters. You can't
just pretend it's still the wild west and let everybody use all the
water they'd like to.

Between all the ads and the non-meteorite related political discussion
on this list I am considering unsubscribing.

Average gasoline prices in Arizona ($2.57/gal) are about 13%
lower than California ($2.97). How does that 13% difference turn
into an almost 100% (claimed) increase in your fill-up?

California has more than 3 times the lane-miles of Arizona and
it's drivers account for 11% of ALL of the miles driven in the
entire country (more than 5 times Arizona drivers, and we have a
lower fatality rate because no one from Arizona can drive worth a
damn), so yes, our roads do get used and abused and could use
some love. Believe it or not, road maintenance is what the fuel
tax is used for, we just have a lot more roads that need
maintaining.

And "most" produce comes from California. And by most we're
talking a huge majority. Some comes from Mexico, some from other
places, too, but California is our nation's produce isle.

I am still appalled at how wildlife has become political. The spotted owl,
the desert tortoise and now the non-native, spotted rainbow minnow are all
listed as endangered species! It is not difficult to find a spotted owl at
night but researchers look for them during the day. The desert tortoise
lives underground and researchers look for them during the wrong time of the
year and in the wrong places. You will not find a desert tortoise in the
middle of a dried lake bed in the middle of Summer. They use the tortoise
for political purposes to shut down vast areas of land. The federal
government tried to relocated 1,200 to build a Chinese sponsored solar plant
just to have them euphonized. They even tried to claim they were wiped out
of an area they never existed in the first place. I found a dead tortoise
with a transmitter glued to its back. The brass transmitter snagged on a
mesquite bush and that is where the tortoise met its slow and painful
demise.

As far as the spotted rainbow minnow goes, we will let California politics
handle this one! It sounds like somebody is trying to gain control of water
rights. The interesting thing is that the aquifers are recovering nicely in
LA and other counties since agricultural demand has rapidly decreased.

Of course it is, if in order to get around local laws! Arizona has very
high-priced cigarette taxes. People were buying by mail and having them sent
from other states.
Lots of people went to prison for smuggling.
Good luck with that.

I've been trying to get hold of a small portion of Broken Hill but it
can only be sold within Australia. Things were great before, but not
now. Can I have a piece sent to my mum and have her package it up and
send it out of Australia? Just curious. I think not. I would then
cause problems for my mother. But then again with Victoria, it's not a
problem, all the states in Australia have different rules. Damn, I
could turn around and declare my property here in Southern California
as Australian property.. an embassy so I can call diplomatic immunity.

But I think the bottom line is, you're crossing the line and asking
for some idiot to cause you trouble. Just my thoughts.

G'Day All
I think the bottom line is, it's illegal. I have watched introduced
plant, animal, etc.. into Australia. Even though your request seems
genuine, the law is the law.

As for other comments on California, I think every state has a problem
in some way or another. As for here, gas prices are high, taxes are
high, freeways are congested and yes Michael F. it's a free for all on
the freeways.

What I'd like to see is the bullshit about dredging for gold in
California shoved up some political hierarchy's arse. Dredging is good
for the environment, the fish love it. You stir up all that good food.
But try to tell that to the politicians. That's all I've got to say
on this post.

Cheers

Well ... kinda true for Florida ... if you are driving a cargo van, you are
REQUIRED to stop. I have a warning ticket to prove it! Chased me down, lights
flashing! ... and the officer had a photograph of the sign that states such
about cargo vans. Told him that I gone in and out of the state a LOT of times
and had never stopped nor been stopped (in a VERY nice way!) ... his response?
"It's a slow day for us!" At least he was honest and had a sense of humor ...
thus a warning ticket!

There are agricultural inspection stations on I-10 and I-75 entering
Florida, but there are no such stations on the many alternate routes.
The inspection stations along the interstate are for commercial
traffic and private drivers are not required to stop. You can drive
unchecked across the border with unicorn horns and moonshine in the
trunk and nobody will notice or look twice.

My only problem with California drivers is that they all stay in left lane no
matter how slow they are going. I passed a thousand or more cars in the right
lane because it is always clear. California has every right to try to protect
it's agriculture.
By the way, Australia is same, checkpoints at Western Australia border and all
produce destroyed.

Average gasoline prices in Arizona ($2.57/gal) are about 13% lower
than California ($2.97). How does that 13% difference turn into an
almost 100% (claimed) increase in your fill-up?

California has more than 3 times the lane-miles of Arizona and it's
drivers account for 11% of ALL of the miles driven in the entire
country (more than 5 times Arizona drivers, and we have a lower
fatality rate because no one from Arizona can drive worth a damn), so
yes, our roads do get used and abused and could use some love.
Believe it or not, road maintenance is what the fuel tax is used for,
we just have a lot more roads that need maintaining.

And "most" produce comes from California. And by most we're talking a
huge majority. Some comes from Mexico, some from other places, too,
but California is our nation's produce isle.

Michael is so. Cal.

That is a crime, you really want someone to receive and ship goods to you in
violation of California law? They could be prosecuted for that.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT METEORITE INFORMATION

Hi All,
Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
As some of you know, I grow exotic plants, have a
Greenhouse, etc.
Unfortunately, CA is THE worst state when it comes
To importing plants.
I have taken to growing cuttings of Plumeria - the
Tropical plant that produces the flowers used in Hawaii for
Leis. There are some very exciting hybrids being grown in
Thailand. However, though all of the other 49 states allow
Importation, CA refuses - even though all cuttings have been
Submerged in malathion for 30 minutes, have a governmental
Declaration of same and no creature or fungus or the like could
Ever survive even a 30 second dunk in the stuff.
So, what I need is a friend on the list who is willing to receive
Shipping and re-box them and send to me Registered Mail.
Of course, I will pay all costs and get the person
Free Priority Mail boxes and prepaid shipping labels
So they do not have to stand in line at the post office or
Anything like that. Just sign for the package, slip it in
The Priority Mail box, print the prepaid label and drop
It off at a post office without waiting in line.
This needs to be someone in a state other than CA
And is home to sign for the boxes when they arrive (a few times).
If anyone is willing to do this for me I will cover all expenses
And express my gratitude with a nice meteorite specimen.
Please contact me off list and change the subject box
So it does not read "Meteorite List"
Thanks for your consideration, Michael
