Photos: See Five Fireballs That Lit Up Colorado Skies

Early on March 11, many Denverites saw a ball of fire streak across the sky.
Subsequent reports suggested that the object was probably an earth-grazer
meteorite - and this kind of thing actually happens fairly often in the
state.

Evidence aplenty can be found at Cloudbait.com, the fascinating website for
Cloudbait Observatory in Guffey, Colorado.

The landing page devoted to fireballs documents dozens of such incidents
over the past decade and a half.

Count down the five most recent sightings shared by Cloudbait prior to the
latest one, featuring photos, maps and excerpts from each listing's text.
(For even more information, click here.) That's followed by a 7News report
about last week's fireball.

I am looking specifically for photos of the Tucson Meteorite

NOT need to be a "close up" - just showing the cases from any distance).
If anyone has any such photo(s) I would be most grateful if you

I can see why people use FB for business, but imagine if we could
capture all the manhours wasted on Hi5, Friendster, Myspace, Bebo,
Imeem, Google Orkut, etc. and put that time towards something
productive. It's only a matter of time before we add Facebook to that
(incomplete) list.

Re: [meteorite-list] Photos of Dr. Laurence Garvie and Myself teaching meteorite basics.

2014-03-15 Thread Martin Goff
Michael, you can add twitter to that list although I recall you are
quite active on there... ;-) Like i said previously,
different strokes for different folks :-) Each to their own and we can
all enjoy whatever social media we wish, or not. I appreciate
everyone's opinions on what they want to participate in or not. All I
know is that I use Facebook numerous times a day to keep in touch with
family and friends all over the world. A lot of my recent meteorite
purchases and trades have only occurred through Facebook and for that
and other reasons I am a big fan :-) But I fully appreciate it's not
everyone's Cup of tea, each to their own :-)

Now although I use twitter I have not taken to it at all and out of
the two facebook wins every time :-) But that is another story
entirely...

Cheers

Martin

Hi Anne,

The simple answer is security settings per post in FaceBook (FB).

FaceBook posts can be the following;

Public - The post goes goes to anyone. You can see them.

Friends - The post goes to the FB friends that have been approve by
Ruben as FB friends. Only his friends see them

Group - The post goes to a specific group that Ruben would select.

Lists - The post would go to a specific list that Ruben made that has
his FB friends he wants
in the list. An example is my Meteorite Interests List. Everyone I
have in FB that is related to
meteorite interests are in my Meteorite Interest List. This keeps me
from bothering these folks
with my other interests they may not want to have anything to do with.
It keeps things respectful of others for me

And there are a few others...

For some examples, I use List's a lot. I made several. One of them

is

called Family and only my family members get those posts.

I host two groups and my posts to those groups do not go to my
meteorite FB friends.
(unless FB breaks or I blow it).

This is part of the learning curve I mentioned in a previous post.

Another example... Melinda Hutson hosts the Cascadia Meteorite
Laboratory page. I just invited a bunch of folks to "Like" that page.
It is currently
gaining members by leaps and bounds and when CML posts something, all
those folks will see it. If those people do not like what CML posts,
they can simply
not follow it (a control command) or they can simply unlike it.

FB also offers more opportunities for businesses and dealers to reach
out to millions of people.I have yet to see any meteorite dealer
take advantage of this
and it truly is a way to grow a business. They all must be making too
much now to bother with that!!! ;) Just a thought...sometimes a
business owner or manager
needs to step back a bit from their perception of what is and actually
run their business as a business, if they want to grow (Business 102).

The bottom line is this.

Email Lists are very limited in features. They hold you captive on

who
sees what you post and what you see other post (excluding filter you

set

in your software)
FaceBook fixes that.

As far as the NSA bs, that's what it is. If they want to know about
you, they do and don't think they don't! If you have that much to

hide,

you should not have any
electronic means of communications that is tied to a network. It's

just
silly to think that way. What's really funny about that...is that

some

of my friends that could
actually have something to hide...are closer to true outlaws as can be
(top dogs in the 1% world)are on FB. So this NSA stuff is simply
silly perception.

I am by no means saying email lists are bad, I enjoy this one minus

all

the ads...but I have filters employed!

Anne,

Best of all, the sponsor pay for it and this all freefor now.

It takes 30 minutes to set up most of it once a person has a basic
understanding of the featuresand like memost people learn about
these features over a period of a long time and implement these features
as they learn about them. Really, no big deal.

BTW, it was great seeing you at Tucson! I had fun talking to some of
your clients and helping them understand! See you next year!

Lists.. Groups... How do you find time to manage all that? I
haven't even found time to update my website since I got back from

As for the NSA, I don't know how that got into the conversation, it is

Hi Anne,

The simple answer is security settings per post in FaceBook (FB).

FaceBook posts can be the following;

One of them is
called Family and only my family members get those posts.

They hold you captive on who
sees what you post and what you see other post (excluding filter you set
in your software)
FaceBook fixes that.

As far as the NSA bs, that's what it is. If they want to know about
you, they do and don't think they don't! If you have that much to hide,
you should not have any
electronic means of communications that is tied to a network. It's just
silly to think that way. What's really funny about that...is that some
of my friends that could
actually have something to hide...are closer to true outlaws as can be
(top dogs in the 1% world)are on FB. So this NSA stuff is simply
silly perception.

I am by no means saying email lists are bad, I enjoy this one minus all
the ads...but I have filters employed!

also read Meteorite-Exchange's page (much cleaner, how do you do that

But I cannot read Ruben's page. Why not?

Hi Anne and Listees,

Yes, you can control who can post on your own page or a page you are
the administrator of. You can even set the permissions so that only
you can post and nobody else. Or, you can let only friends post. Or,
(if you are brave) you can let the entire world post. It is best to
only let your friends post and then keep an eye on those. If somebody
posts something offensive, you can delete that post and you can also
block/ban the person who posted it. For example, our good friend Mr.
G. Lindfors is on Facebook. You can preemptively go and block him so
you will never see him on FB, ever. Or, wait until he sends you that
first batch of photos and then block him. It's easy to block people
on FB, just a couple of clicks.

The NASA page, if it is truly "official", should have someone policing
the posts and deleting the offensive or off-topic material. It's
usually one or more volunteer admins/moderators that do this. There
are many NASA pages on FB, and some of those are unofficial, so those
may contain anything. FB, like the internet in general, is some good
and some bad.

Best regards,

Hi Anne and List,

Any Facebook page (personal or institutional) that is set on "public"
is visible to the entire world (including most search engines).
Anyone can view a public FB page, whether that person is a FB member
or not. However, if a privacy settings of that page are set to
"friends only", then only a FB member who is also a "friend" can see

That is why NASA's page is visible to anyone, member or not.

Ruben's photos were likely set to "friends only" and therefore you

Anne, you can filter out the trash by looking for a link near the top
of the postings section on the NASA page (or any institutional page).
You will see a little drop-down link with the options of "see posts by
page" and "see posts by everyone" (exact syntax may vary slightly).
Click on "see posts by page" and you will see the official posts by
page administrators. Otherwise, you see posts by every Tom, Dick, and
Harry - which greatly increases the noise to signal ratio.

Thank you, this is helpful.

Now for another question:
Is the owner of a page, NASA in that particular case, able to "clean up",
so to speak, his page, and delete anything he/she does not want associated
with him/her?

For instance, if I had a Facebook page I would not want to see posts by
some of our most famous crack-pots tacked on it. Could I erase them and
still have a public page? I suppose my question boils down to: How much
control does one have over a Facebook page?

Dear Anne
You have full controll of Your page. You can hide or errase posts, coments,
remove members. Everything that is necesary to take control of Your personal
profile or group. You can let others post on Your page or limit it only for
Your posts, so I think its enough.
I have more than 300 members on my Polandmet group and never have any
problems with nasty coments, spam or bad behavior. And I accept anyone who
want to join my group and follow my news.

Nothing to worry

Ruben's photos were likely set to "friends only" and therefore you

Anne, you can filter out the trash by looking for a link near the top
of the postings section on the NASA page (or any institutional page).
You will see a little drop-down link with the options of "see posts by

Click on "see posts by page" and you will see the official posts by
page administrators. Otherwise, you see posts by every Tom, Dick, and

Thanks Carl,

Re: [meteorite-list] Photos of Dr. Laurence Garvie and Myself teaching meteorite basics.

2014-03-14 Thread Anne Black

I cannot see Ruben's page either. And here is what I don't understand:

A few weeks ago someone posted a link to NASA's Facebook page, I was
glad of that because I could finally look at a professionally done and
monitored page and see what Facebook could really be like when well
done. Well, I looked at NASA's page at length, and I was very
disappointed by the amount of garbage posted there (idiotic comments,
crazy theories, and more), but at least I could read it. And I can also
read Meteorite-Exchange's page (much cleaner, how do you do that Paul?).

But I cannot read Ruben's page. Why not?

Thank you guys! Wonderful pictures!

And Zelimir didn't look a day older!

[meteorite-list] Photos - Ensisheim 2013

2013-06-27 Thread Bernd V. Pauli
Hello List and Hanno,

Thank you very much for sharing these photographic impressions
of Ensisheim 2013 with us! I wish I could have attended the show
and the get-together, I wish I could have been there to personally
congratulate Dorothy Norton on her becoming a honorary member
of the "Brotherhood of the Guardians of the Ensisheim Meteorite".
Richard would have been very proud of her, and, well, heaven knows,
maybe he is!

I would have loved to personally get my Chelyabinsk thin section from
Anne and my commemorative Chelyabinsk medal/coin from Mike Farmer!

Hanno was kind enough to do this for me and send both items to me.
Hanno, thank you very much for doing me that favor!

> Thank you Zelimir and thank you Hanno!

Oh, yes, Martin K. ... absolutely! This event wouldn't exist and prosper
without Zelimir's continuing effort to keep it alive and going! Zelimir, our
hats are off to you!!!

Cheers,

Bernd

Hi all,

Just uploaded some photos of a 4.50g Chelyabinsk oriented IMB nodule
onto my Flickr account. This piece has some lovely frothy roll over
lipping and also some tiny individuals that are stuck on the posterior
edge. Link is below:

[meteorite-list] Photos of fresh impact craters on Mars

2013-05-17 Thread Robin Whittle
Here are some press releases with photos:

http://www.uanews.org/story/ua-mars-camera-reveals-hundreds-of-impacts-each-year

  http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?release=2013-162

The paper itself is behind a paywall:

  http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0019103513001693

Over these photos there is quite a range of colors in the undisturbed
surface, the colour of the craters and the colour of surface where the
ejected material has landed.

I get the impression that Mars would be not such a great place to find
meteorites. It seems that few of them would be slowed enough by the
atmosphere to land at a moderate speed. Gravity is about 0.37 that of
Earth's and the surface pressure is 0.006. Although the scale height is
1.8 times that of Earth's, I guess that the only meteorites which fall
to the surface slow enough to survive would be a lot smaller than those
which can do this on Earth. Perhaps a few fragments of exploding larger
objects might cool and fall this way, but my impression is that Earth
would have more meteorites remaining intact on or somewhat impacted into
the surface than would be the case on Mars.

Hello list!
By clicking on the link you can see the discussion of a meteorite Chelyabinsk

Christian died in a car crash, much too early, much too young!

If you succeed in retrieving pics of his last Vienna museum
visit, Matteo, I would very strongly suggest that you put his
name as a (c) to them and, may be, as an act of integrity, you
also ask his widow before publishing them, if you are able to
somehow reach her. Unfortunately I don´t have her address at
hands, but may be someone can help out here.

Christian was a very fine guy, and a truly dedicated collector!
I, and some other list members here, had the great pleasure of
teaming up with him on a NHM Vienna visit only a few years ago,
when and where he probably took the pics that you are now talking
about.

Thanks a lot, Hanno, for the brandnew impressions from the Munich show and
the photos.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to participate this year, so the happier I am
about reports. I remember that you mentioned, Hanno, in your report for the
German forum that Gebel Kamil is more or less vanished from the tables,
right? Wouldn't be too surprising I guess. That's a wonderful iron which
obviously made it's way to the collector's homes.

Hello,

the Munich Show 2011 is over.
This year we had more visitors than in 2010 during all 3 days.
On meteorite I have not seen much news.
I think the freshest meteorite material on the show was from Mike Farmer
with his Thika.

All profi dealers were attending the show as the last years.
You could realy see, that there was less material from NWA available than
last year.
For sure there were some nice specimens also achondrites offered, but
absolut not to compare with that from some years ago.

The prices are high.
Individuals of ordinary chondrites what would not sell 3 years ago will
now be bought and the collector is happy to get this.

This year there was unfortunatly no meeting on the friday evening.
But I have to say that it was again very nice to meet all the friends and
collectors during the show.

That we had lots of fun you can see on the photos.

2011-11-02 Thread M come Meteorite
I heard many dealers and people are not happy for not have sale and buy
material seen the high prices ask from many dealers, especially moroccans where
they ask to much highest prices for all type of meteorites, and I give all
reasons seen ask 3 euro for ordinary chondrites with crust its for me a
exaggeration, its good for they lower the prices if they want sale and not have
tons of meteorites on the hump (Italian saying).
Hope next year come in the Munich Show, but as a photographer for the
mineralogical reviews since I works for these

Hello,

the Munich Show 2011 is over.
This year we had more visitors than in 2010 during all 3 days. On
meteorite I have not seen much news. I think the freshest meteorite
material on the show was from Mike
Farmer with his Thika.
All profi dealers were attending the show as the last years. You could
realy see, that there was less material from NWA available
than last year.
But I
have to say that it was again very nice to meet all the friends
and collectors during the show.
That we had lots of fun you can see on the photos.

As we said we all want to do it over again next year!
Let's hope for lots of rain between now and then.

Thank you all of you who attended the gathering too for sharing your stories

[meteorite-list] Photos of Holbrook Anniversary Hunt & Finds

2011-07-19 Thread Erik Fisler
Hello All,

It was a pleasure to watch so many hunters make so many finds at Holbrook for
the group hunt! I was very happy to be asked to help guide hunters for the
group hunt. I spent 5+ hours of my 19 hours in the field over
Friday/Saturday/Sunday instructing hunters on where to hunt and what to look
for
and I can say it was awesome watching them grin when I verified their finds.
Kudos to Jim and Ruben for doing most of the behind the scenes organizing for
the hunt. There is a lot of patience involved with juggling 50 people and
those
who really listened walked away with the knowledge to find something that day
or
in the future.

My finds from Friday and through the morning Saturday consisted of 3
individuals, 2 fragments and a piece that was just fusion crust all for a total
of less than 2 grams and my father was kicking my butt!! After spending most
of
my morning driving back and forth from the hotel room to the strewn field and
guiding hunters I decided to pick up my father and the small group he had taken
on a hunt. He asked me where I wanted to hunt and I told him I had seen Moni
and Bob moving towards a flat in the middle of the north side and I wanted to
beat them too it so we headed to the spot I had my eye on with the family he
was
guiding and began to search. That's when I found a few fragments with in a few
centimeters from each other stuck in the clay on the surface. I had my dad
drive the truck over so I could bring out the shovel and sieve, (as we had
plaid
the fragment game before). A few people surrounded as I slowly and
carefully broke up the clay into the sieve. I had about fifty grams in
fragments when my shovel clinked against a much bigger piece in the ground and
everyone froze with excitement. That's when I pulled out the 240 gram
piece It took about an hour and a half to recover the 160 grams in
fragments and the 240 gram stone for a total of a 400 gram find. As far
Holbrook
goes, besides Larry's whopper, I haven't heard of that big of a find in the
last
few decades. Ontop of that Richard had another mongo find of 47 grams which is
extremely rare for Holbrook in 2011. Together we have over 500 Holbrooks with a
90% of them individuals, average size 1-2 grams and before that point my
biggest
was 23 grams and my father had found one around 30+ grams. It amazes me that
there was a 400g find and a 47g find along with s many other stones all
found in the same day, regardless if there were fifty hunters or 1000 hunters.

Anywho... here is a link to the photos. I uploaded them to my new Google+
account which is linked to Picasa. For those of you who don't know, Google+ is
a networking site by Google that is still under testing and is only available
to
those invited by people who are testing it, for now anyway. So if anyone wants
to try Google+ shoot me an email and I'll shoot you an invite. Also since this
is my first time using it to host an album it would be great if I got some
reviews on how easy/difficult and how good/bad it is to decide if I'll use it
again.

Re: [meteorite-list] Photos Enisisheim 2011 Meteorite Show - France

2011-06-21 Thread Marcin Cimala

Hi Pete and List
Let me answer You and share some of my "behind the table" observations.

I missed friday becouse of some serious car problems and arrive to Ensisheim
at 10PM what never happend before.
I feel, that I sold less than last year but I sold more what was for me a
little surprize. In fact the whole show looks slow Some tables was
empty, some dealers missing. Not many spectacular news on tables. Except
Greg's achondrite that was very exciting meteorite and very beautifull and
my new hammer stone Soltmany. But in fact I have no time to see every dark
place in Palace so maybe I missed something.

Moroccans have more earth stones on tables than Regency Palace have in
walls. I personally save two of my friends from buying interesting looking
rocks for some hundreds of euro.

One of the optimistic information I can mention is a perfect weather this
year. Sunny but not hot.
I cant wait for Munich 2011 where I have more time to look for stones and
speak with friends.

MC Hammer
:D

Great pics, Mirko!

Judging from the photos, it was the perfect time to be in France.

How was the market?

Did you notice a change in customer volume?

In vendors?

Prices?

Bulk of NWA's?

I've never sold a meteorite (bought lots, though!) but I think it would be
valuable information to hear how the market is holding up these days,
there and with the last Tuscon exhibits.

Cheers,

Pete

[meteorite-list] photos of meteors? seeking collector for meteor archive database

2011-03-25 Thread drtanuki
Dear List,
Is anyone working on an archive database for photos and videos of meteors
besides the collection on Jeff`s site? I have some "questionable" photos of a
meteor-not (in my opinion). IF anyone is collecting such please email me
offlist and I will supply them.

In my opinion we need to develop "experts" within our group that can identify
known meteors and known fakes. This will aid in the quick determination
if/when a photo or video appears. Any thoughts or ideas amongst you all? I
know we have photo experts here. Thank you. Dirk Ross...Tokyo

[meteorite-list] Photos of my Wisconsin Slices are up

2010-05-03 Thread Joe Kerchner
Hello listees.
Again I'm sorry for the long long delay, I was going to add the photos when
soccer practice was over, but we had some family issues after practice and took
up a few hours, I have been editing the pics since. I am adding more pics every
few minutes. If you do not see anything that interests you yet, check back soon.
For those who purchased slices already I sent them out this afternoon. They
all look as good or better than these ones. I didnt have the time to photograph
them before I had to ship them, if I did I would not have been able to ship
until tomorrow afternoon. I cherry picked them for you, they all have crust and
great features.
All of the pieces are absolutely gorgeous. I love this material, some of the
best looking stuff I have ever seen. I am absolutely sure you will all love
them. If anyone is not satisfied with those or any others that you purchase, I
will accept returns, however I am absolutely certain that everyone will be more
than satisfied. most weigh at least a tenth of a gram over.

Here are the pieces I have available, more will be posted within the next hour
or so, every few minutes a new piece will be added.
Enjoy!!

Hi List,

I was speaking to Jay Piatek yesterday and he has just done an update of his
collection photos. If you haven't seen them before, do yourself a favour and
have a look. There are some rare and beautiful specimens there not to
mention what is likely the most thorough Pallasite collection in the world.

[meteorite-list] Photos from the Munich Show 2009

2009-11-03 Thread Hanno Strufe

Hello,

here are my photos from the Munich Show last weekend.

This year you could realy see, that there were very less meteorites for
sale from NWA.
You could see the one or other better individual, but most was not that
what a collector would like.
Also I had the feeling that there were much less visitors than last
year.
Very interesting was the exhibition of the india show with the large
multicoloured crystals.
Don´t forget to say that the fossil exhibition with the large dinosaurs
and archaeopteryx was worth to see.

You will find the pictures on my website at

http://www.strufe.net

go with your mouse cursor on the top at “Foto-Galerien” and the sign
for München-2009 is coming up, there you see the 4 pages on the right
that include each 10 photos

or copy the following link into your browser

Re: [meteorite-list] PHOTOS NEEDED - RSVP

2009-07-19 Thread Michael Blood
 Hi all,
I am in the final all nighters stages of finishing my book on
ASPECTS OF METEORITE ORITENTATION.
I am very dissappointed at the relatively few regmaglypted
Meteorite photos I have. I blew it and didn't get a photo of the fabulous
Regmaglypted nose cone in Mike Farmer's room a few Tucson Shows
Back (the owner passed on a $100K offer, just to let you know how fabulous
that puppy was)
And to this day I bemoan the fact I passed on a CHEAP totally regmaglypted
Oriented Millbillilly my first year of collecting "because I already have a
Nice Millbillilli and that one is all covered in that red mud." (!)
Anyway, anyone with an oriented meteorite with regmaglypting
(especially stones) your photos are desired - and of course, you
Will be given full credit (and we all know a stone becomes more valuable
When it is in print).
Photos would IDEALLY be 6 inches at the longest point and 300dpi.
If you don't know how to set the dpi, then the largest photo you can send
Me the better. Focus and lighting are, of course, key issues.
Please send as many photos as possible (digital photos are free),
but only one per email.
Any other special oriented specimens are welcome, but the
regmaglypted ones I really need.
The book is shaping up really nicely - but I do need a bunch of
Regmeglypted oriented specimens.
RSVP all.
Thanks, Michael (OFF LIST, of course)

Darren you have a knack of finding these intriguing webs sites.
Heck this slice is only several magnitudes larger of my mirco NWA 482. Mine
too supposedly came from the far side and it too is under intense study.
So as far as science is concerned if that's the only criteria, then my teeny
tiny is just as important, just quite not as ostentatious.

Re: [meteorite-list] Photos of a meteorite?

2007-12-04 Thread Göran Axelsson
I don't think it is necessary to dump a meteorite in the acid etch. I
have used a toothbrush to apply a small amount of acid to the surface of
a meteorite to get a partial etch. The good thing is that you don't need
much acid and you could watch the pattern appear and stop when you feel
it's enough.

Any acid proof brush should do, I just happened to have a tothbrush at hand.

... no, I didn't use it on my teeth later.

Hi Doug,

do you seriously consider to dump the whole thing in acid for etching, as you say? Imho this would destroy it´s natural as-it-is-beauty. Just for comparison, and as an example, please look at all those beautiful Henburys with a natural reddish-brownish patina left to them - aren´t these far, far more pretty than all those others which at some point after having been picked up from the desert had hit some fate of preparation and "face-lifting"? Or is it just me who thinks this way?

Well, then again, as we all know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder...

Anway: if I were you I would leave it in it´s natural state, just cut or grind
off a reasonably small (!) chip from one of it´s sides to be able to make a
Nickel test - that´s it, and don´t consider it a wound to the piece, but
instead just a little window into it´s wonders!

Good luck - and may we stay tuned to any news on this?

[meteorite-list] Photos of a meteorite?

The bottom looks pretty flat.

Couldn't you sand, polish and etch just the bottom surface?

The top would retain it's unique look and then you would know if it was a
meteorite or not.

Re: [meteorite-list] Photos of a meteorite?

2007-12-04 Thread Michael Farmer
Doug, it is a nice shape, but you have to know! I see
no problem cutting a small end off, and etching it,
then it would be so much nicer, with a beautiful
pattern on one end, and the question would be solved.
If you cut a tiny groove, you are making an ugly mark,
that while it might sort of confirm that it is a
meteorite, it is like drilling a core sample, it does
damages, makes it ugly, and can not me undone. A small
endcut however, is normal, shows the etch which would
allow classification, and gives you full proof that it
is a meteorite. The specimen is nice, but not the best
shape, so it is not like you are destroying a perfec
oriented button shaped meteorite covered in flow
lines.

By the way, for one this small, have it cut on a wire
saw, not in a metal shop!

Hi Mike,

By posting, I just hoped to get some opinions on the shape, which I am
purposely not commenting on as it relates to meteorites in order to get some
feedback. Like someone's mother said, why should I be the nurse, when I can
be the doctor for this meteorite? Or was it, why be the nurse when you can
be the doctor :-)
Had my Mom told me that, by now, I probably would be the right doctor to ask
what to do now!

You are right about determining authenticity, of course. The problem is
that we are dealing with a quite small sample and the circumstances are not
bad. If I had, say, over 200 grams of an ugly shape, then I would
definitely take your advice. But here there is a minor but exciting chance
that it might somehow pan out. I am not sure how much service I would be to
the specimen if I learn it is a meteorite, but in the process destroy a
major portion of it and screw up its very distinguishable shape.

What I am thinking of doing is filing it enough to do a Nickel test, which I
can do just fine if I want. What I don't like about that is, from my past
experience, I have to file a relative deep grove to get a reasonably
trustworthy result, and that will disfigure this small piece (for the tiny
chance it really is a meteorite and bla bla bla).

How many classified irons are there out there anyway, of under 100 grams
TKW? Of what use besides personal gratification of knowing will my
whatever-it-is-object be? If it really were unique, could something this
small be useful to science in some reasonable way and how should I handle
this if that were a major concern? Even if it were a meteorite, it is
unlikely it would have enough commercial value to worry about that.

I'm going to be very interested to see what I end up doing, not because of
high hopes, but rather, to know what I should do with such a small candidate
iron in general. For the moment, the only thing is see is that a negative
test result might save me a very long trip back, prepared with a metal
detector and more respectable meteorite hunter's toolkit. If I can find
more, having samples for testing will be no problem, and I will have marred
this piece for nothing.

At the moment, I am thinking of doing something like David's sphere
collection: Just dump the whole thing in acid for etching, gently clean it
to look for any markings first, and then polish and let it etch. But, that
would screw up some potential scienceso I hope to get some opinions on
shape, after all, Nininger wrote a whole volume on it.

Best wishes, Thanks for the comments.
Having and eating my cake with hot chocolate right now,
Doug

Dear Listees,

I quickly just wrote up the circumstances of a new
UFO (Unidentified Found
Object), and hope the great list can give me some
meteorite-relevant
comments relating to the form and texture of this
iron object. It seemed to
be the only metallic object for a distance around,
though small, it stood
out remarkably and in plain sight...

Story and pictures below at the link.

Thanks in advance for a little list magic and
meteoritic indulgence,
Doug

Re: [meteorite-list] Photos of the Tucson show??

2007-02-06 Thread Paul Harris
Dear Keith and List,

I apologize for not being able to post Keith's Tucson show images in a
timely fashion. I took my father
to the ER last Tuesday and he is still in the ICU. My sister came down
to help only to find herself in the
same ER on Wednesday. Today is my first day off work since last Tuesday
and I'm now able to squeeze
in some time to work on Keith's photos. I'll reply with the URL when
I've uploaded these batches.

To those of you waiting for replies to your emails I will reply later
tonight.

Paul

[meteorite-list] Photos of the Tucson show??

2007-02-06 Thread Alexander Seidel
Apart from the few nice videos that McCartney Taylor kindly provided for the
list, there has been very little photo coverage of the Tucson event so far on
this forum - as compared to recent years. I think it would be great fun for us
listees, who had to stay at home, to see some pics taken e.g. on the occasion
of the Arnold/Notkin birthday party, some pics covering the two big meteorite
auctions (Alan Lang, Michael Blood), or other pics of meteorite people at the
show. As we all know, a picture paints a thousand words... :-)
