2009-02-22 Thread Bill Mason
Today is my 77th year. I guess I have done more things and have had more fun in
life than can be described in this short message. I'm supposed to be retired,
but I just can't stop. I have to college degrees in Geology and chemistry. I've
sold all the corporations I owned. My patents (12) provided me an income before
they expired and now I spend my time on Meteorite restoration research and
Paleontological restoration adhesives. My world wide traveling has slowed and I
find my wine cellar is in need of restocking. But I hold up my glass to all of
you (with a smile on my face) as you are caught up in the crazy wonderful world
of meteorites -

Dear Listees
I agree with the majority of those who chimed in that this is indeed
interesting and after all of you who have preceded me, I'll chime in.
Am among the older members but not the oldest. Am a research scientist with
an interest in global deserts (yes, I can put you to sleep talking about
deserts as some of you know) -- have been to all continents (except
Antarctica) and nearly all deserts. Have a pseudoscientific interest in the
geochemistry of meteorites (the geochem part is a hobby -- how is that
possible?).
And am honored to be part of this interesting and incredibly diverse group.

I'm retired from General Motors of Canada Ltd. after thrity years of six
and seven days a week three shifts. Would still be there but the doc told me
to get out when I can. I love hiking and camping, Geocaching.
I purchased textbooks on meteorites due to my interest in Astronomy. I'm
also interested in history, particularly ancient history. Built a small
collection of ancient Greek and Roman coins and artifacts, and American and
Canadian silver.
Living on a lot less income now, and that has forced me to stop buying
meteorites and coins, and I'm still supporting one teenager in his hockey
teams.
But at least I got some good ones, like Allende, Murchison, NWA 482 and
Zagami and others like some Olivine Diogenites and nickle-irons. And it is
all thanks to dealers who are members in this group.

My sincere thanks guys. You helped my family and me to touch the stars.

2009-02-20 Thread David Allepuz

Hello list members,

At 41, I'm a a bank office director.
I studied phisics, but bank pays a great income...

I reached meteoritics as a branch of my astronomy interest since a boy.

Last year found a new meteorite at Sahara while exploring with a meteorite
friend (J.Vicente Casado), so we are very busy clasifiying the 140 pieces we
found.

Now, apart of a proud owner of a observatory, I'm also a proud owner of a
meteorite collection.

I'm Married and we have two sons who loves space and meteorites.

And Mike (Farmer), don't worry, we are here, online, waiting for your
notices about your finds in Texas, if you need any help from listees, I'm
sure we will help you.

You all, listees near Texas, make me grow a sane envy.

Have a great weekend hunting for meteorites !!

Wow, new meteorite fall making worldwide news, this meteorite list

Michael farmer

Let's see, what do we know from the list about the new fall?

1) It's a meteorite, not satellite debris.
2) Ron DiIulio and Preston Star found the first two pieces.
3) Moritz Karl and company found a piece that Mike Farmer got to hold in
the photograph.
4) Greg Hupe is going to Texas on Friday.
5) Reuben Garcia is headed for Texas now and has invited everyone to go
along.
6) Eric Wichman is having a big sale to raise money to go to Texas.
7) The initial news reports were typically poor.

That doesn't strike me as being ignored.

Perhaps we should all just babble away, speculating about what might
happen or be found out there in the Lone Star State.

Perhaps more accolades are in order. Hooray Mike! Hooray Moritz! Hooray
Robert! Hooray Shauna!

Out of respect, I suggest we all stop posting to the list, except for our
excited Texas babbling, until we get the all-clear.

Hi,

I run my own industrial hygiene consulting company. We conduct surveys for
manufacturing facilities, chemical companies, etc. Surveys include
monitoring for air contaminants, noise and other agents in the occupational
setting.

I am a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and Certified Safety
Professional (CSP) and have graduate degrees - one in Physical Chemistry and
the other in Environmental Health Science. Prior to starting up my own
company, I was director of industrial hygiene for a large insurance company
for 12 years before it went bankrupt. At that point, I started my own
company.

I became interested in collecting meteorites via another hobby of mine -
collecting autographs of scientists.

It's only been about two years since I started collecting, but I already
have a peer-reviewed publication involving the history of meteorites that
was published in Notes Records of the Royal Society in 2007.

I am particularly interested in historic meteorite specimens and writing
about them.

That about sums it up!

I once had the pleasure of seeing Darryl in a suit (Philip's Auction,
NYC) and he looks VERY dashing indeed.

Someone called and told me today that the fall in Texas was really a
UFO : )

And a friend saw the video and thought all the marathon participants
were running away from the fireball! Fabulous.

I rarely reply to anything, but I will reply to this to say that I
respectfully but strongly disagree with Michael. Personal
introductions are something that makes us a community and makes us
friends--something very on-topic, in my opinion. Michael recognizes
this with his meteorite friends page, but this is better. I usually
quickly delete Met List stuff (most of it tends to 'bid on my
auctions'') but I read and saved all of these. Thank you my friends!
Now I will write my intro.

PS I am sending this in reply to Michael's email so he gets to read it
twice!

2009-02-19 Thread Eric Twelker
I am a meteorite dealer. That's how I make my living. Occasionally I
take on a bit of work in my hobby-job as a mining exploration
geologist. That was my career at one time. I did that for 13 years
and was a lawyer for another 15 years after that--I am 59 now. I
don't practice law any more, but when I did it tended to be natural
resource mega-cases. I am happily married for 30 years with two very
smart sons--one a geologist and one a physicist. (They were two
little guys holding meteorites on Paul and Jim's meteorite kids web
page ages ago.) I love geology and thinking about the Earth . . .
and trying to understand it. Meteorites play a part, of course--
always a spark for a thought, an idea . . .
