I have the same problem on my server. I'm running mod_ssl-2.3.5-1.3.6.
(Additionally, mod_ssl-2.1.6-1.3.3 appears to have the same problem.) Whenever
I give the server a graceful restart request and have added a new certificate

It is sort of complicated. Waht is more important is that if the client
does not want to see any certificates, why bother to encrypt data? Since
you can be "securly" talking to the wrong party, encrypt data without
authenticating the server first does not make much sense, unless you are

I waited for the error.log file to say started as you suggested. And I
still got the exact same result.
And I know that I am not hitting the stop button :)

--prefix is usally for the place you want to install apache to, by
default i believe it is /usr/local/apache, i am not sure as i have
always given an explicit --prefix=/opt/apache as the place for my

Right list.
The --prefix option is where you want Apache+mod_ssl installed. You may
want to try '--layout=Apache' instead.
But if INSTALL.SS

Generally the message below from your logfile means that the client hit the
'stop' button. As for your start/stop/restart problems, I dunno. It could
be that you just aren't waiting long enough for your server to
startup. There is a lot mod_ssl has to do at init. Do a `tail -f
logs/error.log` and

If I protect my certificates in Netscape with a password, when I enter the
password, the request hangs until it times out (this actually doesn't happen
every time, but most times). If I requery (and the password has been
entered), the request goes through fine. If the certificates are not

I'm using apache 1.3.6 with appropriate mod_ssl and openssl. When I connect
to the web server under ssl, I get prompted for a certificate appropriately.
Then, the base "It Worked!" page comes up. But, then I get prompted again
for the certificate and the bitmaps at the bottom of the page show up
