Wondering, and since I have the opportunity to teach a High School Ornithology
class next year as an advanced Science elective, any suggestions for a nice,
compact, illustrated, even lab oriented textbook? Aside from using a field

I used Thayer Birding Software's Birds of North America DVD when I taught.
It has a textbook of sorts embedded in it. The textbook is OK, but not well
illustrated. On the other hand, the DVD is full of wonderful photographs,
bird calls and range maps. I used the quiz module to build

The standard text is Frank Gill's /Ornithology/, which has a new edition
out in the last couple years (meaning you can either use the new
edition, with updated info, or get the old edition for relatively
cheap). It is a thorough survey of most aspects of bird biology, though

Herb Dingman just called to report a White-winged Dove on the wildlife drive
for Big Stone NWR. The bird was just before the stop signs by the rest rooms.

With migration pretty much over(only migrant this morning were several flocks
of Canada Geese heading north), the only new bird today around Rapids Lake was
a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. I have not noticed the 2 Prothonotary Warbler that
had been on the west and southwest side of the lake since I
This morning at Carpenter Nature Center (Washington Co) we banded a Baltimore
oriole that was very yellow. The only hint of orange was the orangy-yellow
upper chest - otherwise nor orange at all.
I've never seen such a yellowish Baltimore oriole. How about others out there?

On May 27th, my husband and I saw a Short-eared owl on a fence post on the west
side of U.S. 59 just south of 310th St. south of Newfolden. When we turned
around and looked at it, the owl flew off and then returned to its perch as we
drove back on the highway.

At 19:16 this evening, an adult Pacific Loon in breeding plumage flew by me at
Stoney Point, St. Louis County. The bird was heading from Duluth towards Knife
River, so it could possibly be the same one I found at Park Point in Duluth on
the morning of 26 May. Although a regular fall migrant in
