While out leading a birding trip to Sax-Zim Bog yesterday, we had some
really fun sightings including two Northern Hawk-Owls, two Boreal
Chickadees and several Black-billed Magpies. Northern Shrike and
Rough-legged Hawks continue to be seen in the bog. Special thanks to Frank

Hi everyone, I spent the day birding Martin, Jackson, Nobles and Rock
Counties. I arrived at the Rock County gravel pit ponds north of Luverne too
late to get much for waterfowl, and the only open water viewed in Martin was in

less than a mile from the Audubon Center. I spotted a the bird around 5pm
south of 190th Street on 280th Ave. Further south I flushed 7 Gray
Partridge. The township roads are full of Horned Larks - and drifting
snow.
Last night I surpased 200 miles of owl road surveys for this month, all in
northern St. Louis County and central/northern Lake County. This translates to
~270 3-minute listening stops. Results: 4 barred owls and a pair of great
horned owls. Good thing I'm not being paid by the owl. Oh wait, I'm
Highlights from Rapids Lake MVNWR included Canada Geese, Wood Duck,
Mallard, Ring-necked Duck, Common Goldeneye, Hooded Merganser, Common
Merganser, 2 occupied Bald Eagle nests, Northern Harrier, Rough-legged

On Hyland Lake in Bloomington this morning there were four trumpeter swans, a
pair of common goldeneye, fourteen redhead, twenty canada geese and many
mallards. There are aerators working and the area of open water is expanding.

Yesterday's MBW group found a Hoary Redpoll (possibly 2) among a flock of about
50 Com Redpolls along the entrance road to Hawkeye Co Park at Indian Lake. This
apparently represents a first Nobles Co record, and this was only 0.4 mile from
the Iowa state line, where this species is considered Ac
