Our yard work was interrupted this morning when we heard a black-billed cuckoo
calling from our oak trees. We were able to track him down— he was concealed
but otherwise cooperative— and get excellent looks through our spotting scope.
First time we’ve ever heard one here in Lake Elmo.
I read an article in the recent Loon where an author removed a brown-headed
cowbird egg from a nest. Brown-headed Cowbirds are protected under the
Migratory Bird Treaty Act since they are native to North America. I want to
remind folks that it is a violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act to
A nice visit to Felton Prairie this morning netted my 300th Minnesota bird;
the Chestnut-collared Longspur.
Also a few Marbled Godwit flying about and chatting up a storm.
Other notables were: Bobolink, Grasshopper Sparrow, LeConte's Sparrow,
Eastern Western Kingbird, and Horned Lark.
