John,
Kim's excellent response is pretty much a how-to for Erie Pier. Keep in mind
that you are visiting property that is not dedicated to birding. It is a
working waterfront that happens to support birds. Worlds collide here.
Respect the privilege of being able to visit/bird a

The last sentence of your first paragraph posed the rhetorical question It
also seems that eventually this could sway the balance of birds in a
negative way. The following excerpt from a larger article (

At this time of year (i.e., pre-earthworm) I regularly see AR's eating seeds
and suet. In fact, they seem to key in to the activity of other feeder
birds. When finches come to the sunflower feeders the robins fly in to
scavenge the bits of seed that are dropped. Same with the suet feeders:
Thanks Julian; great info.
Also, you can contact senders of catalogs directly and either have your name
removed from their mailing lists or, in many cases, have your mailing
schedule customized. For example, I used to get 12 catalogs/year from Lands
End. Now, I receive only 2 (Spring, Fall).
Since it's owl time again, and keeping with the aging/sexing theme, I'll
resurrect this post from last winter about aging Great Gray Owls.

I'm guessing that the writer intended to say Pothole wetlands produce 95
percent of the ducks...etc. I think it's most likely a case of not
clarifying the relative pronoun (crucial pothole wetlands, NOT the
state's crucial pothole wetlands) that the relative clause refers to.
I agree that, as
Good post, Manley. I think this also ties in nicely with Jim Williams'
exhortations to buy duck stamps. As a duck hunter, I buy them anyway, but
anyone buying them is helping to acquire, expand, improve and maintain
habitat important to birds.
