Not yet in Minnesota, but approximately 8 miles south in Allamakee County, Iowa
along the Upper Miss- a mixed flock of about 300 males, both adult and first
spring birds. It is difficult to find much open water along the Mississippi
River in Houston County, but likely to change soon.

There are two male red-winged blackbirds at our headquarters feeder again
today. Purple finches were here this morning.
A red-shouldered hawk was hunting along CR 16 this afternoon - west side of the
refuge.
Horned larks are more abundant today - numbers have been building over the past

How usual or unusual is if for red-winged blackbirds overwinter in
east central MN? We have a male/female pair that visits our feeders
throughout the day.

Perhaps of interest: Five Red-winged Blackbirds seen today in SE Morrison
County, 2 were females. I suspect these are wintering birds with the 10
Starlings in the same tree. Many Common Redpoll flocks including Benton County
w/ one female Hoary, few Horned Larks, Red-tailed Hawk pairs.
