[mou-net] Date Correction, A Bird's Eye View

2015-03-21 Thread Julian Sellers
The date for St. Paul Audubon’s April program (A Bird’s eye View: A
Microscopic Look at Contour Feathers), in the MOU Calendar in the Mar/Apr issue
of Minnesota Birding, is incorrect. The correct date is Thursday, April 9th.

Right now I am looking at an adult male Cinnamon Teal together with four
Blue-winged Teal at the New Germany wetlands.

From the intersection of county road 30 and Yale Avenue go south about .25
miles. The teal are feeding on the west side of Yale Ave and are easily seen.

[mou-net] UPDATE: Cinnamon Teal - New Germany, Carver county

2015-03-21 Thread Bill
About 10 minutes after I posted, the teal flew off to the southwest. I have
spent the time since trying to relocate it without success.

There are areas in these wetlands that are not accessible and the teal
certainly could still be around.

Good luck

[mou-net] Ospreys in the Twin Cities

2015-03-21 Thread Vanessa Greene
Osprey season has officially begun with the first report of a sighting in the
southern suburbs so I am posting my annual plea for new nests or sightings to
be reported to the Twin Cities Metro Osprey Watch. We have an informative page
on Facebook, have a blog at ospreywatch.blogspot.com or you can email us at
osprey...@gmail.com. Last year we had 101 occupied nests in the eight county
metro area. There were 89 nests where eggs were laid and 126 chicks survived to
fledging age. We are always in need of help monitoring all these nests, so if
you are interested in getting involved and watching a nest thru the breeding
season, contact us! We are happy to answer questions about ospreys in the Twin
Cities Metro area! Thanks.

Re: [mou-net] [mou-rba] Any updates on the Brambling on Sat Mar 21?

2015-03-21 Thread Jesse Ellis
Hi all-

I received a message on Facebook from John Richardson, the original finder
in whose yard the brambling appeared in Brainerd (409 N. Holly Street). No
dice yet - he's been out of town for a few hours though.

He welcomes people to his house, by the way, but I don't have any further
instructions for access. He's excited to have people.

The address of the location of the BRAMBLING is 409 Holly Street in
Brainerd, MN. The picture was posted about 40 minutes ago and the bird was
observed for a few minutes. As I noted a photo was obtained. I believe some
other locals are heading over to look for it again.

I'll try to post any updates as they come in.

[mou-net] Long-tailed Duck - Coon Rapids

2015-03-21 Thread Cole Foster
The Long-tailed Duck was still present on the Mississippi River in Coon Rapids
at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. It was staying near the far northwest corner of the
Coon Rapids Dam Park property. Best way to get there is to park at Mississippi
Blvd. and Uplander St. and take the trail south to the river. The bird stayed
close to the northern shore and northwest of where the walking trail meets the
river.

Viewing can be difficult from this point unless the ducks swim away from the
shore and towards the middle of the river. There is an informal trail that
follows the river to the northwest, but you need to cross a steep ravine to get
to it, and the trail is very wooded with not the best viewing opportunities. I
was able to see the duck both from this informal trail and the paved hiking
trail.

[mou-net] Rice Lake State Park: Ice out Bald Eagles.

2015-03-21 Thread Ken Vail
Rice Lake ice went from 20% open on 3/20 to 80% open today. A coterie of
birds and one coyote were feasting on the results from the recent drawdown:
frozen fish. I counted 55 Bald Eagles, Ring-billed gulls, Crows on the
ice or nearby trees Friday, mostly in the SW corner of the lake best
observed from the picnic point. Today that ice is out except along the
edges where the eagles were lined up for easy counting. The eastern end was
still mostly ice and I found additional eagles for a total of approximately
60 to 70. A good variety of waterfowl are also present on the lake.

[mou-net] [mou-rba] Cinnamon Teal in New Germany

2015-03-21 Thread Ron Taube
Hi
Three of us drove out to New Germany to see the Cinnamon teal. We saw seven or
eight other birders with scopes so we all helped each other see the bird. This
was a lifer for me. We saw him in at least five different areas on the pond.
He was with blue winged teals in the beginning but was mostly by himself after
that. We also saw some green winged teals as well. I thank whoever posted this
information for sharing this. As an added bonus we also saw at least five
Kestrels including two sitting right next to each other. I have posted some
photos. They are from quite a distance but at least I think you’ll find them id
able.

As far as I am aware, John Richardson did not see the Brambling again
today. I'm not sure if others went to look or not, so that's all the news I
