[mou-net] More on lesser black backed gull
I have been stopping at that park in the evening often in the last week or so. Large flocks would stop for awhile and eventually leave southerly to other sections of prior lake or maybe spring lake. I eventually made it to Spring tonight and refound it. It was on the water with a minimum of 5000 gulls. Herring and a few franklins gulls were there as well. There is a small parking lot off Shoreline Boulevard which runs between Upper Prior Lake and Spring. From there it's a short walk to the water Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Swans, Osprey, Sparrows- LqP/Yellow Med.
(Posted by Jason Frankvia moumn.org) MARCH 24- 14 yuge Trumpeter Swans flew low over Salt Lake this afternoon, hooting and hollering. Lots of Mallards and Green-Winged Teal; water is high since the snowmelt, mudflats are gone. The road around the NW side remains a quagmire, apparently due to a plugged tile attempting to drain a swamp. Had a good look at an Osprey heading north along Hwy 75 in the Madison Dairy Queen Parking Lot. Gadwalls and Shovelers are prominent in flooded fields, with large rafts of Redheads and Canvasbacks on deeper wetlands. Great Blue Herons are carrying lots of nesting material to a secluded grove 1 mile west of Lac qui Parle CR 7, at the intersection of 140th and 107th Ave, just west of Goodman Marsh. Looks like the start of a new rookery. Big flocks of American Tree Sparrows are still in the area, and today I found my first Vespers, Savannahs, and Chippings in Lac qui Parle County. One Woodcock is peenting at Prairie Marsh Farm. Red-bellied Woodpeckers are calling, and theres an active pair of Pileated Woodpeckers just over the border in Gary, SD, in the woods behind Buffalo Ridge Resort. MARCH 23- There were 40 Tundra Swans on the lake at Miller Richter WMA visible from my vantage point along Yellow Medicine Co Hwy 67, 10 miles due south of Dawson. A pair of Horned Grebes were out in the middle. Lots of ducks, around 500 Mallards, with Shovelers, Ring- Necks, Scaup, Green Wings, Hooded Mergansers, and Buffleheads also present. At the smaller slough just west of Miller Lake, there was a mixed flock of Snows, White Fronted, and Canada Geese, guessing around 1,000. The Eurasian Collared Dove population is exploding out here. They are the dominant town birds in Gary and Marietta now. Also present in Madison, Dawson, and Canby. They seldom venture beyond city limits. -Jason Frank Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Osprey Watch
The Ospreys will be returning to their nests in the twin cities area within the next few days or weeks and Twin Cities Metro Osprey Watch needs your help. This is our annual plea to please report new nests or osprey activity in the eight county metro area to us. We are trying to monitor all know nests in Hennepin, Ramsey, Carver, Washington, Anoka, Wright, Dakota and Scott counties as part of a long term study on these raptors. We are also seeking volunteers to help monitor these nests. (122 known occupied nests last year, which included 13 new nests.) We are assembling our field teams now so If you are interested in helping us by checking a nest once a week through the breeding season, please contact Vanessa Greene at osprey...@gmail.com. You can find more info, including last years productivity and behavioral results, on our facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/Twin-Cities-Metro-Osprey-Watch-218968924786696/?ref=hl) or our blog... www.ospreywatch.blogspot.com Please feel free to share this post with anyone who might be interested in joining this research effort. [mou-net] Woodies
On Monday, mama Wood Duck was checking out one of the Woody boxes here at the Stivland ranch in Plymouth. This morning, she was checking out the interior of the box while papa stood guard on the Wood Duck box roof. No sign of Hoodies yet. Mallards are swimming in the 9 inches of open water at pond edge. Geese have made noisy visits, as well. Sid Stivland Plymouth, MN Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Eur. Collared-Dove still in Duluth
John Richardson found the dove on Park Point near 31st Street on Wednesday and it is still present this morning at 25th Street perched on a utility wire. I'm posting this because it has not been reported yet on mounet and it's possible some visiting birders could be in Duluth this weekend who'd be interested. I believe this is only the third St Louis Co record, with the two previous collared-doves in Duluth disappearing shortly after being seen. There's also a Two Harbors record, maybe two, and the species has been seen several times in recent years in Grand Rapids. Otherwise, this species has been essentially absent in NE Minn.
