I saw several white-winged crossbills this afternoon in Roseville - there
was a large group that was scattered in the spruces along County Road B2
between Dale and Western Ave., a small group near Central Park, and 2 small
groups in spruces along Merrill Street between Howard Johnson Park and
Cotto
My husband and I observed and photographed a Varied Thrush between 7:55 and
8:10 am this morning. The bird was in the crab apple trees on the NW corner
of the intersection of Merrill and County Road C2. The bird flew a few
trees to the north on Merrill street.

I was out at Afton State Park today and heard and saw what I believe to be a
1st spring Summer Tanager. Unfortunately, I was out running, not birding.
Is there anyone that frequently birds Afton that can check on this?? I was
following the Afton trail race course (see link below) and the bird was

Observed many species including over a dozen Henslow’s Sparrows, several
Grasshopper, clay colored and field sparrows, Eastern Meadowlarks, at
least one Bobolink, several Orchard Orioles, and the Summer T
Summer tanager present @ 1050 north end of Prarie loop approx .4 miles south of
the park boundary/ 50th (straight @ 1st fork). Calling from slope on west side
then flew over prairie loop trail and called from east side. Happy birding.

Bird was still coming regularly into the evening.
Some more logistics - enter the U driveway from the east (northeast) end
(if you are facing the house this will be the right side). The driveway
is narrow and as you drive around the house, the feeders will be on your
left as soon as you pass
