I had a great time on Friday night and Saturday morning. Kids love the
wheel and lots of adults as well. The new old light board was a hit
as well. Many would ponder all of the pictures and were very proud when
they could name most. I was surprised that many could figure out the

September 7th. The Minnesota Ornithologists' Union welcomes volunteers
to work at our Minnesota State Fair booth on the DNR campus.

Tuesday,I was birding with a photographer who has a camera with a great
lens. We were looking for purple finches but when he showed me the
closeup- the bill was decidedly crossed. He saw 4-5 birds. The light
was bad but the bird did not have wing bars and its head appeared

is the hard shift to fill but it has some advantages. You can enjoy the
food and fun of the fair and then rest at the MOU booth and listen to
the music. It is usually less windy, cooler and not so busy at night.

Many of the evening shifts are not filled. If you like to listen to
music, this is the shift for you. The nights are cool and the wind has
usually died down. Evenings at the fair can be quite nice, especially if
you have spent the day at the fair... sit down and rest those tired

when it is cool and calm and you can listen to the music. Pretty easy

Besides the flock I saw 30 years ago, by Seagull Lake, in the company of
its owner who had raised them, this is a first ever. Female, in our
back yard near the clearwater road and adjacent to w. bearskin lake.

A friend made a recording of a bird song, at midnight and after, which
resembles a nashville warbler song. Is that unusual or even possible.
My friend was doing the frog survey for the DNR.

I observed a black-backed woodpecker working on a tree adjacent to the
Clearwater Road in Cook County. The light was dim and I was not
carrying bins so I don't know if it had the yellow forehead patch.
First black-backed I have seen in about 4 years. I will email again if
I re-locate it.
