Both pages have a doctype declaration for me?! Try downloading one of the pages, e.g. www.uniklinik-freiburg.de , remove the doctype declaration, and see what happens in Mozilla: Mozilla will display the page without those spaces between the images, as it is displayed in NN 4, Opera, and IE.

All pages use a Server Side Include. The file that's included has the drop-down navigation menu, it inhhibits MS smart tags (although not truly needed) and whatever code that i want to add to *all* pages that might be open for future change, such as the link. This way i only have to change

Is this a real pref, or is it a typo? I use user_pref(font.minimum-size.x-western, 12); to limit the minimum size of fonts. This improves things, the input box in google is now much better readable. The url-line at the top and the status-line at the bottom are still small, however.
