Re: IDE answers

2000-10-12 Thread Laurens Holst

by the IDE hardware: ALL IDE harddisk types can be connected. (1MB,
 10GB, 40GB, 123GB, ...)
by the IDE software: current bios 2.01 'only' support reading/writing of
sectors in the first 8 GB range of the device. So if you're using a 10
GB harddisk, the last 2GB can't be accessed. The IDEFDISK software which
you need to generate partitions, will automatically limit your
 partitions to the 8GB boundary.

Jon, I have a question.

The new BIOS v2.0 isn't compatible with the old one already because of the
added 24-bit sector access. So most direct-interface-access programs already
don't work. Why didn't you increase the size of the drive info block at the
same time??? Now all direct-access software has to be adapted for version
2.0, and once again for version 3.0... It would be easier to do this in one
go I think...

Port #80 and a few above.

The chip is Exar ST16C550, a 16550 UART (the common PC serial chip, like
Albert said). If you want the data sheet (466K PDF), look on the
manufacturer's web page or ask me by e-mail.

That's correct.
However, if you want to write a program for it, I recommend to use the Erix
Fossil-driver. It's fast and well-documented, and it works with most
interfaces. It also works from Pascal.

Hi Ivan,

I was wondering which Laser Disc video players

According to manual you can connect also Pioneer LD-1100. But I haven't
seen any LD-1100 players with the needed control jack. Besides, LD-700
is _lot_ better and reliable than LD-1100... You can get LD-700 players
from USA, they're cheap there, but shipping is expensive... If you
order any players from USA remember to say that sender TURNS the
shipping screw to LOCKED position!

I got my player unlocked and it was in terrible condition, I had to
fix it 2 days before it runned again...

Is very difficult to find MSX LD software?

Yes, with good luck and connections to Japan you may find disks, but
they're rare also there. And unfortunately they're also expensive,
price varies from 80-120 USD per disk + shipping costs.

I have seen them for sale only once during 1 year in the www.yahoo.co.jp.

Greetings: Saku Taipale, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

PS. If someone knows where to get disks, I'm very interested in buying
them :-). I have also complete and running Pioneer PX-7 + LD-700
system...

If you know how to repair a LD-700:

4 broken LD-700 players for $36.

A lot of money...

At http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp I also saw a complete PX-7+LD-8200D (so
this LD model also works with PX-7)+2 MSX laser discs auctioned. Japanese
people were paying a lot of money for this complete system (I have the pics
of
the auction).

It seems that JVC-Victor also designed a LD MSX system:

Quite cheap price, but shipping costs are too high... You can get
working LD-700 for 25-40 USD.

Yes, but truth is that these disks are rare and seems that they're
quite wanted items too.

Ah, yes, I forgot this auction. I saw it too :-). If youwant play MSX
Laserdisks it would be better to buy PX-7 from Japan, because you
will need NTSC model. Other possibility is using needed converters
for getting PAL videosignal from NTSC LD-player. All disks I know
are NTSC.

This was interesting :)

You can also use Sony HB-G900xx computers with LD-player (for example
LDP-1550). It does have the P-Basic and RS-232 for controlling the
player. Iwein van Caelenberg does have both Sony MSX2 and LDP-1550.

Hummm. I was interested in a Australian PX-7. It seems that there they use

Problem is not a computer itself, "problem" is a LD-disk. As far as I
know all MSX Laserdisk software is NTSC stuff. When you're playing
NTSC disk you need NTSC player. And if you want play MSX LD with
PX-7 you need to superimpose the picture with PX-7. Now you see
what is the problem when your video signal from LD-player is NTSC
and you try to digitize it with PAL computer... result is something
unwanted in the screen.

It's not either cheap to buy needed converters for NTSC - PAL
conversion. For example good quality NTSC - RGB converter is
worth of 80-200 USD and RGB - PAL converter you can get from
Sunrise for 55 Euro.

Re: IDE answers

2000-10-12 Thread Laurens Holst

The new BIOS v2.0 isn't compatible with the old one already
 because of the
added 24-bit sector access. So most direct-interface-access
 programs already
  don't work.
 Which program will not work?

I don't know exactly. The programs which directly access the IDE-BIOS (v2.0)
without clearing the C register... I think EVAIDE does it.

But anyway, there are hardly other programs which directly access the
IDE-BIOS so I think it's best to make the update to 3.0 a.s.a.p. before
other programs are going to use direct access. Best is to update it even
before EVAIDE is adapted, so that that one doesn't need to be adapted a
second time.

By the way, IF you (Jon) are going to update the IDE disk variable area,
best do it good. It won't be compatible anyway, so I think it's a good idea
to use OFFSET +4 +5 +6 +7 (for example) for the 32-bit disk size instead of
OFFSET +4 +5 and +8 +9...
